Beyond installing your ECBS and parasitic suppression kits in an SB-220 and a Henry 2K-3 (both worked very well, thank you), the most serious project I have undertaken in the last 40 years is to take a perfectly good Alpha 76A and install a pair of 3CX800A7's in it and modify it for QSK.

Normally, my moto is "If it works, don't fix it." The 76A modification was a serious violation of my moto.

However, the thought of a light weight high voltage power supply for my Alpha does have an appeal, especially when I would like to take it on DXpeditions and international airlines are almost to the point of weighing baggage by the ounce.

My guess is that 6 of the Panasonic switchers would power an 8170 in

Thats right Harold.
But when one switches the amp on the switching of the triac can be heard on the HF transceiver.
However, this is not really an issue since it disappears in approx. 2 seconds. I haven't heard of any problems with this softstarter so I guess it is a technically sound solution.
At least in my twin GU84B amp with 3 phase power supply the 3 softstarters (one per phase) perform very well.

God knows that I enjoy a little fun & BS, but I was having trouble finding boots with high enough tops.
Mike -- In the Fall of 1996, when I accepted W8JI's challenge to debate him about parasites on the Internet on rec.amateur- radio.homebrew, I received an e-mail from a Ham in NYC advising me of Rauch's SOP during a debate. Examples: Bluster; bullying; the incredible word avalanche; use of lap-dogs to concur with his every utterance, and to nip at his opponent; and also never admitting to a technical misstep. In a nutshell: hubris.
The defense for word avalanches was to read as far as the first technical misstep, stop, delete the rest, concentrate on Rauch's misstep and hang on to it as long as possible before moving on. This procedure seemed to work and in less than two months the debate was pretty much over, or so I thought until I got word from Carl, KM1H, informing me that the Rauchian camp had a brand new playground - the AMPS reflector/mailing-list - and this time it had a moderator/censor to protect Tom. I subscribed to AMPS and within hours I received a telephone call from the moderatpr/censor informing me that I would not be allowed to do to Mr. Rauch what I had just done to him on rec.amateur-radio.homebrew. I found this statement amusing because the worst damage to Mr. Rauch had been done by N7WS' Hewlett-Packard Model 4191A RF Impedance Analyzer.
Editorial -- IMO, Mr. Rauch sincerely believes that a debate is not decided until one of the combatants Publically admits error. Thus, my guess is that Tom will never admit that Ni-Cr (resistance- wire) alloys do not have reverse skin-effect at HF, that VHF-resonant circuits can ring, and that the only reason to use resistance-wire in a R/L VHF suppressor is to increase its dissipative ability on 10m/ 12m - thereby reducing its Q & Rp at 100MHz Without toasting R-supp. Alas.

Hal,

The softstarter in the Emtron amps is a phase control triac system, not a zero crosser. It allows gradually more of the primary AC sinewave into the powersupply. By doing so there is no need for a series resistor to limit the inrush current.
Although the series resistor current limiter is effective I consider the phase control system more gracious.

I have put a quicktime movieclip on
showing the softstarter power up a lightbulb.

I too abhor the postings where each side simply calls the other names,

That is not the same as questioning the other's knowledge and

Those things SHOULD be questioned when appropriate and it often leads

To thrive, like a TV soap opera, a discussion group needs a

With all due respect Mike, I think you are missing the importance of
these "month-long" debates.

In my view, whenever two highly intelligent and experienced engineers
can not agree on what seems to be a simple issue, there is something
to be learned by the rest of us. The longer the debate goes on (as
long as it stays polite) the more I learn.

Earlier this year there was such a debate on the Usenet antenna group
about current in a HF mobile loading coil. It was fascinating and I'm
glad I followed it. I don't think either side convinced the other, but
I learned a lot.

Keep it up, guys. :-)
