I just hope we don't spend 3 weeks deciding which size wire to run to the shack.

I agree Pete, although I also maintain strict topic focus on the
Topband reflector.

Here's a simple request from one op who is interested in amps. Personal grudge matches are bad news and will put off people who don't have any ax to grind. If we really want to support ham amplifier work, this stuff is counterproductive. Let's take our flames back to the NNTP world.

I am giving the Yahoo group a try, because I think the anonymous moderation and "appropriate use" policies of the other list were very worrisome.

I hope I don't have to unsubscribe from both of these groups!

My guess is that Pete won't get banned from here, if that was what he was implying. If he chooses not to post here, it will be of his own free will. at least, this is my understanding of policy on this new and improved list.

I wonder who else has been banned from the other list in the past week...

And what's the alternative? I should "out" him? That's not my prerogative, either.

I have been a member of amps since its inception, and while I disagree with prior restraint of speech, I think its series of moderators have acted with great self-control in the face of extraordinary provocation. I believe the previous moderator resigned at least in part because of the private vitriol directed at him.

I'm done now - if you guys are going to run an amps reflector, talk amps.

W4AN was not a fan of free speech - he replaced me as Admin of
Towertalk when I refused to censor posts there; this is not a knock on
Bill, just a difference of philosophy.

I run a local community affairs mailing list with only two rules - sign
your real name and maintain basic civility - keep it substantive, not
personal. In 6 years, I've had to ban one person for a week. A
parallel list has no such rules, and has disintegrated into ugly name-
calling.

From what I have read, such a regime on amps would have worked pretty
well, though the Admin would have had to ban a few people.

Top band Reflector

Earlier today someone mentioned the top band reflector. I love 160 and can't
wait until the bands get quiet enough for it to be productive. However I
have a lot to learn about building some kinda receiving antenna that will
improve my reception. How do I find it?

Guillermo,

The PR version of the 4-1000A stands for pulse rated and simply
means the
internal structure will handle very high current on a intermittent

Others may give you a different take on the idle current, but not
having a
copy of that handbook I would think that is for 2 tubes. ZSAC (
zero signal
anode current) for AB1/AB2 is generally adjusted to give about 1/2
of the
rated dissipation of the tube(s).
### The PR version will handle sky high plate voltages...
like 10-30 KV.

### In GG... with around 7 v of zener bias.... and 4800V... I
was seeing around 70 Ma ZSAC. [single tube]

### A small SPST CENTER OFF toggle switch and a string of
diodes will provide 3 x bias positions..... and a rotary
switch is the ultimate set up. I also found that the vdrop
across the string of either 1N5408's or 6A1O's [ 1 kv - 6 A..
400 A surge] diodes increases from aprx .7 V to almost .8 V
when current thru em increases from 200 ma to 2 A.

### I installed 7 x 1000 uf lytics in parallel [7000 uf]
across the entire mess of diodes...... resulted in superb bias
regulation. Just beware... the wire leads from the diodes IS
the heatsink for the diodes. The 6 A diodes run luke warm
with 2 A CCS thru em.

shoulda been a heluva lot bigger.... once we determined the
peak current on the 240 vac line.... every 8.3 msecs..... using
Duncans amp tools. The chief culprit was the input Z of the
plate xfmr primary [aprx 70 ohms]... and NOT the
meassured .08 ohm Dc resistance.

### To get bigger wire to fit a 100 A breaker.... snip a few
strands off the outer layer... and re-twist... fits like a glove.
