Hal, You are looking for crow's feet. A term used in the aircraft industry?protecting a wire?bundle goes through a bulkhead. It usually comes in 4 foot hunks. There are a number of different thicknesses. Picture a u shaped channel with square notches cut out of the two sides to let it go around the I.D. of a hole. How about McMaster - Carr?

At Wally World this morning I went looking for that
plastic stuff that you slide on the edge of your car door to keep it from chipping paint off of other people's cars in parking lots.
The stuff is clear plastic and has an opening on one edge and maybe some glue or sticky stuff to keep it on the car door.
It will be used on fan openings in the power supply module and on the RF deck to finish the 4-1/2" holes, under the grilles.
There was a guy with a WW badge standing at the register in the Automotive Department. I asked him if he knew where the door edge protectors might be.
When he answered, "I don't have the faintest idea," I knew it was a wasted trip. He had a computer terminal right in front of him, but he probably wasn't authorized to use it.
So then I went on to try and find a sandblaster and powdercoater for the cabinetry. HA!
$150.00 for sand/bead blasting $175.00 for the base coat/ steel protective coating $150.00 for the finish
coat
This is for a 23 x 24 x 18 steel box.
In New Jersey I could get this whole thing chrome-plated for $100.00, and sandblasting is included.
So I figure about twelve cans of textured black Rustoleum spray at $5.17 per can ought to do it just fine. If I could find a local source of VHT Wrinkle-Black for that price I would probably go that route again. The last two chassis projects turned out just fine with wrinkle finish, and it matches the old Collins stuff just great.

Re: Enough- Now to a Choke
I sniped off a lot of the original and replies. Thanks Rich for the reply, I saw the parts for sale but I am try to build what I can. I have completed a hand made, 12Kv plate variable capacitor. I know I could buy one but then I can't say I made it. I have a 1" dia phenolic rod for a form and/or 22mm glass tube that could be mounted on a dowel to make a choke with. I was hoping to do a single wind of 20ga magnet wire. If I can do this and all does not go up in smoke and I feel confident I plan on then looking for a vac variable plate cap and a band switch and building another one for 40 thru 15, I don't go below 40 and work 15 the most. I have an extra socket, chimneys, fil transformer and such for the next amp. I built the P/S so it is in its own cabinet on wheels, 0 to about 5Kv @ 1 amp. The RF deck will sit on top.

Subject: Re: [ham_amplifiers] Enough- Now to a Choke
Hi Dick -- Good luck on your 4-1000A amplifier. I built one back in the 70s and you can see it at:
. <> net/~jpk5lad/4- 1000A%20Amp/4-1000a1.htm
I was going to mention a cost-saver for you since you mentioned about building your amp a low cost. Many years ago I read a suggestion, I believe in 73 Magazine, where a fellow suggested using a 1 gallon pickle jar as a replacement for the more expensive Pyrex chimney for a 4-1000A. He cut out the bottom and enlarged the top and claimed it fit the air socket just fine. At the time I read that I think my regular Pyrex chimney cost me $12 but I put that bit of information in the back of my skull in case I ever needed to have another one or a replacement. So far I've never had to use it.
You mentioned that you already had a chimney so you won't need that bit of info either but it might be worth remembering for something.
The plate choke I used in my amp was commercially available but I don't recall the manufacturer. They probably aren't in business now anyway. (Oh no....I hope that doesn't resurrect the recent thread on the ham_amplifier reflector which had nothing to do with ham_amplifiers.)
Good luck on your project. There's nothing quite like the feeling you get from throwing the switch on a 3500+ volt power supply connected to a newly-build but totally-untested amplifier. You've heard about people who saw their whole life flash before their eyes? That's similar.

Hello all you smart people, I don?t have any electrical training but I am slowly building an amp from my junk box. The power supply is complete. I enjoyed the information about "glitch"protection and did a cut and paste of all the important notes, making my information list to build by. I will use a 50ohm resistor and a small gage wire as a fuse in the HV line. I will also put in a fuse c/t of the filament / bias line. I don?t have much money (retired) to buy but a lot of stuff to build with. My next thing to figure out is the plate choke for a 4-1000A, I plan on about 3500v, first test, it nothing goes up in smoke I can later up the voltage to 4500. The amp will be a mono-bander at first, 21Mhz. With out a dip meter is there a simple way to build a HV plate choke. I will not load it to the max , just trying to make something work.

Re: Enough- Now to a Choke
I don¡¯t think the Coleman works on the 4/or3-1000 I think its for the 3-500 size. I hope to sneak up on the 3500V , I know it wont tune just right but I will soft start it with an autotransformer , not just flip 3500v to it cold. Then increase the drive. It does have a standard soft start set up in the PS.

Subject: Re: [ham_amplifiers] Enough- Now to a Choke Jim: Just to throw in my $.02, I forget which tube it was, but the glass from Coleman lanterns are supposed to make fine chimneys for one or the other, and heat isn't such a concern. I'm sure somebody will pipe up with the answer, I just mention it also along the lines of saving $. 73, Randy KZ4RV K5LAD@... <mailto:K5LAD%40arrl.net> wrote: Hi Dick -- Good luck on your 4-1000A amplifier.
