G8JCFSDR.exe CAT command
7
Hi, All My Elector SDR Shield 2.0 arrived safely, thanks to Elektor International media BV. Based on firmware si5351vfo2_1_G8GCFSDR_jmP.ino I wrote G8JCFSDR_Elector.ino to control the Arduino UNO. After doing frequency correction for SI5351, SDR Shield can work to receive 40 meter band signals well. The software I use is setup_G8JCFSDR_282.exe, thanks to Peter GM8JCF Is there any of my colleagues who are willing to explain some of the things that I experienced: When tuned to the frequency 7000000, the CAT command received by Arduino is "f 7013000 7001000 1" 1) how to setting G8JCFSDR.exe so that the second parameter (cmd.parseInt()) is not 7001000 but 7000000 ? 2) how to setting G8JCFSDR.exe to change the IF frequency which is = 12000 ? 3) what does it mean, the third parameter = 1 ? Thanks for the help. 73, Yoyos, YB2RR

G8JCFSDR With 192KHz Sampling Rate
3
Hi I thought I would post a screen-grab of the G8JCFSDR running with 192 KHz sampling rate. I am using an ASUS XONAR U7. You can see that the U7's bandwidth is pretty flat upto about 48KHz and then starts to drop away, or of course it could be low pass filtering on the output of the Elektor SDR Shield - I will have to crank up some of my other SDRs and see what they look like at 192KHz sampling. I normally operate the G8JCFSDR at 96000 KHz because with my old eyes, the click to tune feature is a bit fiddly at 192KHz sampling rate, one can of course change the "sweep" to reduce the Hz/div. Wishing you all a great weekend. 73 Peter - GM8JCF

G8JCFSDR Website : HTTPS : Testing Contact Page
Hi As you saw last night I upgraded the G8JCFSDR website to use HTTPS, and I could do with some further help testing it please. On the main page there is a link to a contact page, "This is Peter Carnegie's (G8JCF) Software Defined Radio", https://www.g8jcf.uk/cgi-bin/contact.cgi which could do with some people testing it for me please. It seems to work for me, but stuff always seems to work for the programmer/author, and then fall over when real-world people use it !!! Thank you in advance for your help Peter - GM8JCF

G8JCFSDR Website has been upgraded to HTTPS (g8jcf.uk)
7
Hi I have upgraded the G8JCFSDR website - www.g8jcf.uk ( http://www.g8jcf.uk ) - to HTTPS, ie SSL, using Lets Encrypt. I would be most grateful if you could please test the HTTPS website and confirm that all is working as expected. You should be able to just enter g8jcf.uk or www.g8jcf.uk ( http://www.g8jcf.uk ) into the address bar of your browser and it should automatically take you to https://g8jcf.uk ie the secure version of the website. If there are any problems please post them on the G8JCFSDR group at groups.io. Very Many Thanks in advance for your help. Peter - GM8JCF

reading USB serial data
2
Hi All,, I can't wait for the arrival of Elektor SDR Shield 2.0 from Netherlands, for that I tried to change si5351vfo2_1_G8GCFSDR_jmP.ino to G8JCFSDR_test.ino (in attachment), so I can observe serial USB data between PC (G8JCFSDR.exe) and ArduinoUNO (G8JCFSDR_test.ino). I am very grateful to Peter Carnegie / GM8JCF for his very promising work on the development of SDR homebrew. I apologize if you encounter the error G8JCFSDR_test.ino, hope it can be useful for you. 73, Yoyos, YB2RR

Problem with Elektor SDR
4
Hi all, I'm facing some massive problems with the Elektor SDR Shield 2. Let me try to explain this in a chronological order: 1.) Installation of b828 went fine. 2.) During the first start (with elevation) the program complained about not being able to open COM1. That's ok as the Arduino is on COM5. 3.) In the Config I've change the port to COM5 (left all other parameters untouched) and closed the software. I tried to restart and was told another instance is already runnning - correct, I can see the instance. It was active with 1...2% of CPU load but no disk activity. After a couple of minutes I've killed it from the taskmanager. Next start the program was again complaining about COM1 (instead of COM5) and all settings (including the SDR setting) were lost. I've entered a quite painful and time costly loop before I realized that I have to wait roughly 12min before the program finally shut down (and writing the setting to disk) after the window disappeared from screen. *Q1:* Is that normal or the intended behaviour? 4.) During my loop in (3) the Elektor SDR was not detected although the UNO is brandnew and empty. I decided to "xload" the software, which apparently worked. If I open a putty terminal with 115200 baud on COM5 a short message is written. However I can't enter anything - or there's no echo from the Arduino. *Q2:* Is my assumption correct that the Arduino is working correctly without echo and hence no "offline" way (with a terminal) to check the communication? 5.) Although I was able to change the settings for the serial port to be used a connection can not be established. Two popup windows appear on start (with elevation): clsDDSSeriallF.OpenCom: PollMode : Unable to Open COM5 and modSetupRx.initialiseRX @ Line=0 Error Portt COM5 Error Code=0 Error Desc= Port settings and SDRModel are remembered correctly, it seems however the Elektor Shield is not detected (Calibration should reflect this). And that's my final question Q3: What am I doing wrong? Just in the case it might matter: My windows is a 20H2, 19042.1110 Thanks Dirk

The PA0RDT Mini Whip
2
Hi A good aerial/antenna system is a must for HF reception, but unfortunately most of us live in houses with small gardens so we are unable to set up the ideal antenna. This difficulty really impacts transmission, but for receiving serious compromises can be made and yet still achieve reasonable performance. One such aerial is the PA0RDT Mini Whip - http://dl1dbc.net/SAQ/miniwhip.html I have one of Roelof Bakker's Mini Whips, and for it's size it's amazing that it works at all, but it does work and very well indeed - the main criterion is that the Mini Whip head must be located as far away as possible from electrical sources of noise - so this antenna doesn't work indoors - but listen to this to get an idea of just how well thePA0RDT Mini Whip can work http://websdr.ewi.utwente.nl:8901/ I bought my PA0RDT Mini Whip directly from Roelof at roelof(at)ndb(dot)demon(dot)nl. The build quality is extremely good, and the price was very reasonable, EUR 48, but that was back in 2012 so it might cost a little bit more now. I have also seen Mini Whips advertised on eBay from China, but I have no idea if these Mini Whips are as good/rugged as an Roelof original. 73 Peter - GM8JCf

Presets not being saved
5
Hello, since the installation of the G8JCFSDR (Build 282) on Windows 10 Professional, I have a problem to save the presets. No matter if I start the software as a regular user or as an administrator, the G8JCFSDR will not save the frequencies or other settings of a preset. I can change the frequencies and other settings, but after closing and opening G8JCFSDR again the old frequencies and settigs are still there. The only thing what is being saved is the description. Where does G8JCFSDR save the presets? Is it a simple text file in some particular folder? Maybe it is possible to change those settings by editig such a file manually. Best Regards Ronald

FW: [g8jcfsdr] Elektor board
18
I am grateful to you for guiding me to understand this new world. In the end, I think I understand. I need an Elektor module and an Arduino module. By superimposing one another, from Pc I can control the receiver in all its functions. Right? And the firmware will upgrade itself, using G8JCFSDR SW. Does it make a difference if I buy an original or non-original arduino module? I know that the original Arduino is an Italian product but, if I can save money, I'm sorry but happy! :-) 73' IK5FEV Massimo

Code for Arduino Elektor SDR available?
2
717 / 5000 Vertaalresultaten Hello Peter, Thank you for the beautiful SDR program you have built. I have version 282.6 installed and it works well with the Elektor SDR. I am did not encounter problems as described in previous topics (on windows 10, with the latest updates). Only stopping the SDR application takes about 15 seconds, it seems like there is a timeout on the audio device. No problem! I do have a question about the Arduino source code. Is it available? I would like to change this for a different LCD display type and I also want to use the Elektor SDR board for CW tx. (I understand that if there are changes in the next release that this Arduino code version, 1.13, may not work anymore). Greetings, Berto PA3HFN

Troubleshooting Elektor SDR Shied? New Installer
14
Hi All I have updated the installer for G8JCFSDR Build 282 and made it available on the G8JCFSDR site http://www.g8jcf.uk/g8jcfsdr_drt1/downloads/setup_G8JCFSDR_282.exe I have tested the new installer and it seems to work on my machines, but the real proof that the problem has been solved is for other people to try it out on their machines please, (NB if you need to regress to Build 280, in addition to uninstalling build 282, U will also need to use XLoader to upload the 1.2 firmware after U have installed Build 280). I would be really appreciative if you could confirm that this new installer works correctly. Thank You Everybody for all your help in helping me fix this problem (I hope !!), and look forward to feedback 73 Peter - GM8JCF

Troubleshooting Elektor SDR Shied?
35
Hi all, I recently bought a new SDR Hands-on Kit from Elektor, but it doesn't appear to be acting normally. Below is a summary of what I've done and am seeing. If anyone has suggestions on further troubleshooting, I'd be very grateful. I have an oscilloscope if that would be helpful. Thanks much, Frank -- Soldered the four pin-headers to the SDR shield's board, installed an antenna connector, mounted the SDR shield atop my Arduino Uno board, connected to Windows 10 PC via USB. Attached an antenna (known to work well with another SDR). Used a stereo audio cable to connect the SDR shield's output to my PC's soundcard input. -- Downloaded G8JCFSDR Build 282, installed it on the PC. Configured it to run as Administrator. Configured for the COM port, SDRModel = ElektorSDRShield, selected soundcard's in and out as per my PC. Entered other settings on the G8JCFSDR top panel per the manual. -- When I first launched the program, it advised me that the Uno firmware must be updated. It performed an update to v1.3 with no errors. -- After rebooting my PC, I launched the program and clicked to set Power = On. At this point, there is no visible activity on the top panel, and no sound from the PC's speakers. I tried tuning to known active frequencies (10 MHz for WWV, 7.074 MHz for 40-meter FT8), with no change. -- To verify that the Windows sound system is set correctly, I closed the G8JCFSDR program and launched the audio app Audacity. With the SDR shield connected, Audacity shows a low level of noise at the soundcard input. If I connect/disconnect the antenna from the SDR shield, there is a momentary jump in noise. However, there is no perceivable modulation, just a low level of random noise. -- A multimeter shows that +3.3v, +5v and gnd are reaching the SDR shield.

"SDR Revisited" performance vs. RSP-1A
3
Hooked up my MLA-30 and was able to drag in WWV at 10 MHz, but very little else. For comparison, I hooked up the RSP-1A and got excellent WWV at 5 and 15 as well, plus lots of broadcast and other stuff. I used MLA-30 Bias-T box for the Elektor unit, but the RSP-1A provides its own feed. That box is considered a bit noisy by some, but it may also be RF front end overload. In any event, I can't believe that it should be that bad. Anyone got experience / ideas? thanks so much !/mark
