RSGB Clubs Newsletter October 2013 Please also take time to read the letter below from Roger, G3LDI, concerning the GB2CW Morse Scheme. 73 Mark Allgar, M1MPA Commercial Manager Radio Society of Great Britain ------------------------------- If you have any problems downloading or viewing the Newsletter, please contactwebmaster@... GB2CW Morse Scheme I am writing in my capacity as the RSGB Coordinator for the GB2CW Morse scheme. Whilst we have a willing band of hardworking volunteers who participate in the scheme, we need more help if we are to maintain and develop our base of good CW operators.. In trying to turn that situation around, I would like to see a GB2CW scheme in every Club in the UK thus giving every newcomer to the hobby the opportunity of experiencing the benefits of CW. I know that several Clubs already operate some Morse training without participating in the GB2CW scheme. However, including their activity within the GB2CW scheme would add tremendously to the profile of GB2CW. It would not alter the method that you use, just make it more available, and the times and frequencies known too. Let me explain. Background GB2CW was instigated a number of years ago to allow prospective amateurs to complete their Radio Amateur Examination to allow them to use HF. Volunteers helped prospective licensees attain their 12 wpm test which was then mandatory. When Morse proficiency at this standard was no longer required to obtain a licence, the scheme more or less disintegrated. A few carried on tutoring but very little publicity appeared and it was in 2006 that G3LDI questioned the viability of revising the GB2CW scheme. The rest, as they say, is history. We now have a working scheme with between 35 and 40 transmissions on a more or less even split between HF and VHF from a team of volunteer tutors once again. Not only that, but we have a list of volunteer assessors that can invigilate at an organised Morse test with a very attractive certificate being available from the RSGB. This is endorsable for speeds up to and including 30 wpm. Your club In order to improve the scheme’s coverage it would be good to see every Club in the UK, affiliated to the RSGB, have their own GB2CW scheme. It only takes an hour per week on two metres FM to put something very worthwhile back into the hobby that we all enjoy so much. It can be hard work, as we have found, to try to persuade newcomers to learn Morse and gain a certain standard, but it is also very rewarding when newly-proficient operators take to the air, It is not just newcomers to Amateur Radio, of course, who might benefit from a local scheme, and clubs may find demand from unexpected quarters of their membership. How it works As co-ordinator for the GB2CW Project, I issue a letter of authorisation to each volunteer. The information needed in order for me to do that is: 1 RSGB membership number. 2 Full name and address and contact Email and/or telephone. 3 Day, time and frequency you will operate. You can use either HF or VHF. The schedule is in the RSGB Handbook or Yearbook, and on the website www.rsgb.org/morse where you will find full details of the scheme. If it is a local Club project aimed at members, then VHF, 145.250MHz FM would be the best operating frequency. You can have interaction between you and the class, using your own call and use GB2CW when transmitting the Morse to the class. I find this is better because you do attract a regular class each week and build up a knowledge of their progress, plus it becomes a fun thing to do with the banter that goes on too. The GB2CW Project will always welcome Assessors as well as Tutors, so if any of your members feel they are competent enough for that, please encourage them to apply. Ideally we need the same number of each and some regions are severely depleted! I would like to offer a vote of thanks to those already doing this worthwhile job and I do hope that you carry on. Those Clubs that do not have a GB2CW scheme running, can you please discuss this at a forthcoming committee meeting of your Club so that we can really make some huge strides in the UK at promoting this mode. I am always open to suggestions as to improvements and/or other things that we can do in order to achieve the results that are so needed. Likewise, if you have any questions please email me and I will respond. roger@... Thank you for reading this anyway and thanks for discussing it too. I look forward to the deluge of emails from new volunteers and assessors! roger@... 73 de Roger, G3LDI, RSGB GB2CW Coordinator.Copyright ? 2013 Radio Society of Great Britain, All rights reserved. Field day weekend 7th/ 8th.
Initially to Trevor Collins (Club Chairman), & Ian Hope, (Club Events Organiser). All others more than equally welcome. The more licenced opperators, and students willing to learn and score on their work record sheets', The better. As a Club, let's make this work. If other clubs around the country can do it, "Then So Can We", , "THE MYRS CLUB". Re "h&s", my idea of a field kitchen style BBQ has been well thought out, and I've had plenty of training for it when I was in the millitary, under "hostile" conditions, so no need for "h&s" concern. I know what I'm doing in that department, and,/ but for the concern of one who shall remain "nameless", "I" will have sufficient in hand in the shape of fire extinguishers. Re "h&s" on RF Radiation from aerials, all fully licensed operators should already know the formula, as it was part of the original R.A.E. and it still is part of the "Advanced" coursework. For interested students, this formula information can be found in the "Advanced Licence" Coursework study book. I hope this helps any students who may have any concerns with this subject as was recently raised at a MYRS meeting one evening. For further details, please see other parts of this email, originated by me and forwarded by me. This part is basically a "PS" / amendment to my original email as attached. Cheers for now, 73, Ray Davidson, M0RAY, MYRS Treasurer.

DRM NEWS
Begin forwarded message: From: "keithlbird@..." <keithlbird@...> Subject: DRM NEWS Date: 2 September 2013 16:35:03 GMT+01:00 Dear club colleagues, some items that I trust will be of interest for you and your members. HF SSB FIELD DAY. This weekend the 7th/8th Sept is the HF SSB field day, which will be running at the same time as the 144Mhz Trophy contest. Some of the clubs in Kent plan to take part in these contests over the coming weekend, lets hope we have good weather and positions in the results table. Rules for both of these contests can be found on the RSGB website; www.rsgbcc.org/hf/rules/2013/rssbfd.shtml and www.rsgbcc.org/cgi-bin/contest_rules.pl?year=2013&contest=144trophy&seq= REGIONAL BOUNDARIES. In the latest RadCom you will have noted changes of RSGB region for clubs in South London and Surrey, which are now in Region 10 - South and South East. Their are no changes to the RSGB regional boundaries for clubs with Kent postcodes, which remain in Region 12. TRAINING MATTERS. This time I can report that the Hilderstone club recently held an exam session for four of its members, two of whom sat the Intermediate and the other two the Advanced, all the candidates passed. Congratulations to all involved. Since beginning training last September, Hilderstone have achieved 100% success with eight candidates passing the Foundation, four the Intermediate and four at the Advanced level. More relevant perhaps for our clubs on the London border, Cray Valley are running an Advanced course beginning in January, with a two session maths primer later this month. They are also running a Foundation course on the 16th and 30th November. Details of all their courses can be obtained from Chris@... West Kent ARS are also running a Foundation course on the 21st September and the 5th of October. Details from training@... RSGB CENTENARY. I'm pleased to report that the G100RSGB Centenary station hosted by Darenth Valley and Hilderstone clubs, were well supported by their members and friends, and had a very credible presence on the bands with voice and CW operations. Hosting the station took a lot of planning and preparation as well as oversight on the day to ensure that the operation worked as planned. Running such events, like with any special event station is a challenge and provides experiences, which I'm sure members of both clubs will be have learned from for their future events. Thank you to the members of Darenth Valley and Hilderstone for ably representing amateurs and club members of Kent in this national event. The G100RSGB leader board has five members of the West Kent ARS shown in the rankings, how is your club doing? As a reminder, the RSGB are encouraging clubs and individuals to enter the Centenary construction challenge, the cut-off for registering is the end of September. Further details can be found on the RSGB website at; http://rsgb.org/main/about-us/rsgb-centenary-2013/centenary-construction-competition/ RAYNET. We have active RAYNET groups covering Kent who are individual members of the Kent Resilience Forum. Throughout the year the groups assist Kent County Council with exercises, and also support local fund raising charity events. The demand for RAYNET assistance continues to grow, and it needs additional volunteer radio amateurs to maintain its work. If you or someone you know might be able to help, contact details of your local group can be obtained from www.kentraynet.org.uk or www.thanetraynet.org Alternatively email countycontroller@... 73 Keith - G4JED RSGB Region 12 DRM - Kent
