?
West Kent Radio & Electronics Fair - Sunday the 13th of September. Following the successful relaunch of a rally in the West Kent area, the West Kent ARS club have booked the same venue for the coming year and plans to again have a wide range of traders. Details available at
?
?
Advanced training - The West Kent ARS hosted the December Advanced exam for one candidate, who I am pleased to report passed. Colin was one of a number of students who during the summer had signed up to the Bath Distance Learning course, but had experienced some difficulty finding an exam centre in Kent, until West Kent ARS arranged to host the exam.
?
The next Bath Advanced Distance Learning course begins on the 25th of Jan 2015, with the plan being for these students to sit the Advanced exam in June.
?
For those joining the BADL course, a ?30 deposit is taken that is returned at the end of the course to students who remain active throughout and complete the course. Anyone interested in signing up to the course should email Steve Hartley at; g0fuw@..., registration closes on Friday the 16th of January.
?
?
Five Bridges training consultation - Examination secretaries and those of you who?are involved with the training of candidates for the radio amateur exams, should be aware of the training proposals made by the Five Bridges cluster of clubs, on which their is a consultation that has been extended until?Sunday the 11th of January.
?
If you haven't received a copy of the report or the consultation document that accompanies this, do let me know and I will send further details to those individuals who are interested.
?
?
New Kent contest group - Our colleagues from the Maidstone Y ARS club have recently formed the Capel Battery Contest Group, which operates from near Caple-le-Fern on the Kent coast, and are inviting other clubs/amateurs to join them during a number of contests coming up in 2015.?????????????????????????????????????
?
If you're interested in joining a contest group, this might suit you. Email g3trf@... for further details and their contest schedule for 2015.
?
?
East Kent Carrier - Thanks to Erwin David G4LQI who produced the East Kent Carrier newsletter until this summer. Unfortunately Erwin was not able to continue this, and no one came forward to step into the role, so we now miss this medium of news for amateur radio matters around East Kent.
?
Thank you Erwin for your work in producing the newsletter and for all the other contributions you have made to our hobby over the years.
?
?
2SZ 90th anniversary station - In my last update I mentioned the 2SZ special event station that was being put on at the?Mill Hill School, North London,?to mark the 90th anniversary of the first ever radio contact from the UK to New Zealand.
?
If you haven't yet seen it you might like to watch the video that was produced by Jim Lee G4AEH to record the event. This is available at;?
?
Further details of the station and background to the event can be found on QRZ.com and at
?
?
Club of the Year - We are nearing the time for those clubs wanting to submit an entry to the COTY award, to work on their entry and submit this before the closing date of the 31st of January.
?
This year the judging criteria will be on the club membership age profile; training and advancement of members; spectrum use; outreach & promotion.
?
Last year the Hilderstone club in Broadstairs won the regional leg of the award, as did West Kent ARS two years ago. It would be good to see a Kent club once again win the regional contest, if not to feature in among the winning places nationally.
?
If your club members have been active in the past year, and can report progress or success on some or all of the?criterion stated, then please consider submitting an entry. If you are thinking of making an entry but first want to talk this through, email me back and I will endeavour to help you.
?
See for further details about the award and how to enter.
?
?
Our clubs in Kent - I am pleased to report that we still have a number of clubs in Kent where the membership remains active, and participates in a range of events throughout the year, many along the lines of this years Club-of-the-Year criterion.
?
These clubs need their members together with?new ones, who can work together to take forward?training, mentoring and keeping the hobby alive in the locality. Perhaps as we move into a New Year and think of what we might set as a resolution, you would think of joining others in your club to be more active, maybe standing for election to join your club committee.
?
I appreciate the effort that club officers put into the running of our clubs, and the welcome I always receive when I attend.
?
From time-to-time I receive enquiries from around the Ashford area, which doesn't now appear to have a local club that is active. If anyone has any news of any informal groups around Ashford, or who would like to get something started then please let me know, and we will see what we can do to get a club established again around the Ashford area.
?
?
RSGB Membership - For those of you reading this who are not members of the RSGB, may I encourage you to consider joining or re-joining the Society.
?
Our hobby faces many challenges which the RSGB and its team of volunteers tries to address, but it needs members to support its work financially and?to engage with consultations, and is also?always looking for volunteers to take up some of the demand to support members with their queries. If you are an RSGB member and would like to help as a volunteer, email back to me, I'm sure we can find a rewarding role for you.
?
If you're looking to join or re-join the RSGB, you can sign up for membership online or at one of the many rallies where the RSGB bookstall is present. The annual membership fee of ?47 paid by DD ( which includes RadCom), which?can also be spread over a range or payments (quarterly or even monthly?at ?11.75 or ?3.92 respectively).
?
Membership for licensed amateurs under 21 is free, which also extends up to 25 year olds if in full time education.????
?
Online membership applications to join the RSGB or?to pull off a membership form, visit the following link;
?
?
Well that's it for this update, maybe I will work some of you during the VHF/UHF Christmas Cumulatives on 6m, 4m, 2m and 70cms (26th - 29th Dec 14-16hrs).
?
Otherwise, if you have an event or news that you would like me to disseminate in a future update, just send me the details, but do remember to submit your club diaries and reports into RadCom.
