RECEIVED MY 817 TODAY !
Howard Z
Hi everyone I received my ft817 today from my friend in Japan , The radio is as nice as can be imagined and is indeed a dream come true , The first qso was with a w0 reporting 5/9 on 17 meters . Battery current is around 310ma at zero volume and with the lamp off subtract 30 ma at comfortable volume add 50 ma , I will make more measurements when I have time . I purchased the new 1.6ah Sanyo/GE NiMh AA cell batteries , the radio as it comes will not charge batteries in the AA holder , the radio requires that you purchase the optional FN72 battery pack however a quick glance at the schematic and I simply cut the green wire on the battery holder (there are 3 wires going to the holder ) . The batteries now charge at a 180 mah rate , the charge time is programmable , 2 settings 6 hours and 10 hours , the charge rate is fixed so obviously the 1.6 ah batteries need more than 10 hours for full charge ( 150% of their rate) The charge cycle is manual , in otherwords you have to turn it on , the batteries charge whether the radio is on or off and in the off mode there is a count down timer which displays how much time left until the charge turns off . There are no safety circuits so it is possible to repeat the charge cycle and overcharge the cells , however a 6 or 10 hour rate will not damage them .
The S meter is "cute" not only is there a bar display as in all radios but there is a digit to the left of the bar displaying the signal level ( example "S4" ) . My next project will be to probably change some jumpers in the front panel to enable the USA 70cm and 2 m bands . Since this rig is "Japanese" it only covers 144-146 and 430-440 . The 817 comes with an antenna similar to the one supplied with the VX5 which covers 144 and 450 and with the screw on extender 6 meters as well (all 3 bands ) . I have some beautiful whips from my JRC JST10 hand held hf "lunchbox" for 15 and 40 meters and will try them in portable use . Yaesu should make antennas similar to those . ANYONE OUT THERE FROM YAESU LISTENING .. :) 73's for now Howard VE2AED I beleive the 817 will set a trend _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at .
