Group Settings

I just had a quick glance at the Group settings and noticed the following :

?Subscriptions to this group do not require approval from the moderators.

I suspect that the group owner will want to change this to require that new subscribers to the group do require approval, in the interest of keeping out spammers ??

Cheers

I find the best setting for that is "Member's first post is moderated."

I agree that moderating the first new member post is good option to avoid spamming,
however, most groups that I am a member of also scrutinize subscription requests as well.

Note that anyone who is "invited" to join a group doesn't go through this process by default. This is what happens?
during the migration from Yahoo.

Excuse?my ignorance, but did this group move away from yahoo into some other service? Apologies in advance, just gathering my bearings now...

Yes - sir.? For the past few years some of us knew Yahoo was "changing" and Yahoo Groups would be going away.? Some of us urged group owners to make the move to here (groups.io).? some did, and some didn't.? Back then, there was a FREE option.

A couple of weeks ago it was announced that within several weeks Yahoo Groups would be shut down.? So now it is a major scramble for owners still in Yahoo Groups to make the move.? And Groups.IO is swamped with requests.? I understand that now there is a "FEE" of something around $100 to make the move.

This group made it under the wire.? For the FEE I guess.

From this day forward, you'll be sending E-mail to this group as [email protected].? NOT at yahoo groups anymore.

The settings for the group still include the one that allows anyone to join, without moderator approval. ?This is generally not a good idea as it means spammers can join the group and get their messages out to all group members freely. ?

Mark, this is worth changing. ?

The first post is moderated by default for all groups.io groups.? Spammers will generally be caught at the first post.

Yes, but I prefer to triage the newcomers first without having them join the group and able to copy email addresses and other stuff from existing posts.

It’s a matter of policy for the group manager I guess. ?I pointed it out as it might have been overlooked.

I would suggest leaving it open for a couple of weeks. I, as many, already have a group.io account and it made it easy for me to register under my preferred account rather than a yahoo email address that I will most likely abandon once yahoo.groups is gone.

Good point Andrew, not thought about that.?
I've done as you recommend and set the group so new users must be approved.

Your choice, Mark, but compared to using just First Post Moderated I feel you're creating unnecessary work for the moderators.

After the first subscriber approval I've processed I've got back to first post moderation.
There is no way for me to tell if a subscriber is a spammer or not until they post for the first time.
There may be a way for subscribers to include additional information in the request, but for now this approach makes the most sense to me.
The end result is that list members won't be bombarded with spam. If a spammer attempts to post I'll just remove them.

Mark.
