A update on the status of the FT-817 Final unit
?
First off a bit of Yaesu clarification?
?
The board that holds the output transistors is called the Final Unit and is number FR006000. Which mounts on top of the PA board, FR005190
?
According to Yaesu part lady, NO Final units are in stock. NONE are planned to be ordered.
?
According to the Yaesu service guy, Yaesu WILL NOT service the original FT-817. They will service the FT-871-ND and the FT-818.
?
Ah! You say! Don't they use the same final board? I asked that, too.?

Mike,
This is the order I placed today. The parts lady understood what I wanted and this is my order...
3.00 0.00 3.00 EA B CB1333004 EA 26.17 78.51 1.0 FT-817 FINAL UNIT
She did say the units had not time set for delivery.

Scott,
Just call Yaesu and order the boards. I am getting 3. I am keeping my original 817 for a long time so I am stocking up. Get as many boards that you feel comfortable with. Replacing the board is not that difficult.
Put your order in ... If we all submit an order, any order 2,3,4 5 I would think it would be attractive for Yaesu to run a few hundred boards.

If we "all" order 2, 3, 4, or 5 I think Yaesu would have to run tens of thousands of boards... (there are over 9,000 list members, and over a quarter-million FT-817/817ND/818 were sold)

the pa works from 1.8mhz to UHF. there are no separate finals for the band segments
?
The 817 is 99% SMD, and they are the smallest of parts. Forget the magnifying glass, you'll need a microscope designed for SMT rework.
?
I contacted a repair shops, and I was quoted $400 to replace the FETs in the final. He had to do component repair as the assembly is no longer available from Yaesu.

There should be no shortage of 1L6 tubes. There is because people stockpiled, though experts can re-align to use DK92, which is still available at 1/20th price and just as good, but different electrode capacitances. Really failure of a well treated 8i7ND / 818 is unlikely. Stockpiling final boards deprives people that have a failed 871/818. It's possible they've not made Final PA boards since 818 production stopped. More expert repair shops and "hams" can replace the PA transistors, even with ones of a different type that are compatible mechanically and meet or exceed needs for RF bandwidth and power rating. Bias and gain can be adjusted. |
No microscope needed. A regular magnifying lamp is fine. What we did on rework since 1970s (yes SMD existed then, but on Alumina subtrates) was cut the leads on any leaded device and use desoldering braid and iron to clean. Resistor and capacitor removal by braid or two irons like tweezers. Pre-tin but flat to resolder with dry iron and regular 3mm bit. Specialist gear only needed for BGA or similar ICs with no leads |
