What annoys me is that Yaesu voids your warranty if you modify the radio in any way, including the green wire modification. Yaesu should have designed the radio for either alkaline or rechargeable battery use. Just my 2 cents. Keith On 23 Apr 2001, at 21:40, FT817@... wrote:

Hi!
What annoys me is that Yaesu voids your warranty if you modifyLet's examine that, from the manufacturer's perspective. If Yaesu (or Icom, Kenwood, Alinco, etc.) didn't use restrictive conditions in their warranties, they all might be on the hook for repairs caused by so many possibilities that the 817 would not retail in the mid-$700 range here in the USA. I believe that this is something manufacturers have had in their warranties for many many years (excluding most MFJ items and their "No Matter What" warranty, or some of the kit manufacturers or distributors), and some have enforced this more closely than others. I know of some friends who had done mods to VHF HTs, then had to send them in for a repair. When the radio came back, repaired under warranty, the mod wasn't there. But that was in the early 90s, when you could only dream of a 5-watt 2m HT under the US$ 300 mark - and now that price range is good enough for the 4-band IC-T81A among many other dual-band and 3-band radios. Is it annoying? Perhaps. It's possible that with the price-cutting done throughout the supply chain (from Japan to the stores), the profit margins needed to support a service structure that could be more forgiving just isn't there anymore. Makes a nice case for a company like Elecraft (not an employee, or even a customer, just an observation), where you can have direct contact with the radio designers, and they with other owners are willing to help you out if something goes wrong. Yaesu should have designed the radio for either alkaline orThe *radio* was designed to work with alkaline or rechargeable batteries, the AA tray was intentionally designed not to allow recharging. As Inspector Callahan asked, "do you feel lucky?" (regarding making modifications to the 817's AA tray, or the radio itself) If you do, mod away and have fun. Many others have done so, without worrying (much) about the warranty. My AA tray is still intact, except for the cheap-o springs being compressed after only 2 months or so using the radio, and the Maha pack now lives inside my 817. After the $$$ I have put into this little radio (817, CW filter, TCXO, Maha NiMH pack, soft case, ATX Walkabout and Maldol whip antennas, DTMF mic) I'm in no hurry to mess up the radio. Pres said it accurately with his message on this thread earlier. There are other things I can experiment with - antennas, external power sources, etc. - where I am happy to keep the radio as is (except for installing the CW filter and TCXO). Just my opinion......... Patrick WD9EWK/7 at work in Phoenix AZ (but not for long....) |

They did. You can easily use alkaline batteries or the Yaesu

That's a CYA situation. In truth, most manufacturers will honor the

warranty on a modified radio provided the mod didn't cause its problem and is not likely to cause one in the future. The one glaring exception (and there well could be others) used to be Collins Radio. When you sent them one for even the most minor repair, they would not return it to you until it met new gear specifications (without ANY mods) and that was typically a multi-hundred-dollar tab. 73...
