Backorder misery (MP-1 & Z-11)

Per subject.

Been on backorder for a few weeks with both. The MP-1 will
be another week (understandable for a small company) but AES doesn't
even have date for the Z-11. I have had the FT-817 for almost a month
and have yet to get on the air since I do not trust it's internal
SWR guestimeter with any homebrew. I have too many flashbacks of
smoking 6146's in my youth to take any chance on transmitting with
something less than optimal. :)

I have been doing a bit of listening with a simple antenna and have
been impressed with what I can hear even on a junky antenna. I may get
brave and (given spare time) be pushed to get the calculator, an ARRL
guide, PVC, wire, whips, chains, etc and a decent SWR meter to build a
vertical.

Hopefully will have everything by Field Day.

Cheers,

- Joe, NE2Z

Oh no, don't worry. The FT-817 has finals rated about 5 times what it will
put out. Also there is a "HI-SWR" shutdown. Go play.

Boy. Thanks, Dad. I guess I needed to learn that !

Thanks, Pres for the good news. It's off to Home Depot I go

Don't be shy, Joe, give it a try. The FT-817 doesn't seem to be very
fussy about SWR. At the 5W power level it will start backing off the
power if more than 3 bars are showing. If the PA was in any way
fragile, I'm sure we'd have read tales of woe here by now. I don't
recall seeing any.

As an alternative, consider knocking up the tiny Emtech ZM-2, which
is a fraction the size and cost of the Z-11 and will match just about
anything.

Owning a Emtech ZM-2 I can echo Julian's statement that it will tune
anything! ..and about as fast as the Z-11! I don't leave home without
mine.

ordered my z11 from ldg and received it in about 3 weeks earlier this
month. nice tuner, ran a long wire ant off it and it was just fun
with the 817 in the field.

Hmm interesting enough I called yesterday for a status from AES on
order and they informed me it shipped but out of another store
location. Sure enough UPS tracking says Ill have it Monday.

(In my best Stimpy impression) ...joy !!!

Even the gent in Milwaukee (where I ordered it of seemed a bit puzzled
since the backorder.

Wishful thinking leads me to thank someone who monitors this list and
works at AES.

:)
