Todd >> Todd, The MFJ antenna is a copy of the B&W window mount antenna. The only thing MFJ did was add what they call a balun at the feed point. The coil is mounted on the mount and the mount is a part of the counter poise. They work but you can make a big improvement by adding a 2 foot rod below the coil and insulate it from the mounting bracket. Since this is somewhat off topic I suggest that you go to the HFpack yagoogroups. Almost everyone there is running the FT-817 and all types of so called pedestrian/mobile/bike/wheel chair antennas. Hope this helps Bob AF2Q |

It is made/marketed by Waters and Stanton in the UK. That is the Walkabout. The B&W is a window sill/mount antenna as you say but not a walkabout. The mono-banders are similar to the Maldol. Off topic! a bit quick on the trigger finger I'd say. The poster may be running an FT-817 although he did not say so, because his interest was focused on the antenna more that the rig. Yahoo! I have not tried them, but I don't think I will. I think they are too
small, with too many traps to be effective. For the money, you'll be certainly much better off with a random length single wire against ground, or a random length dipole with balun (no ground) and in both cases an antenna tuner, such as the small LDG Z-11. This will be also much easier to package, more rugged and considerably more efficient. I have the MFJ1899T 6-80 antenna and it works OK. You must have a counterpoise wire attached to the rig's ground lug appropriate for the band. A rule of thumb to follow with antennas--SIZE MATTERS! Bigger is better.
The MFJ-1899T antenna packs really well and is a great antenna to take along for SWL'ing or an occasional contact. I would not expect to bust any DX pile-ups with it nor would I rely on it for emergency communications, but in a pinch, it would work. This antenna (and counterpoise wire) always gets taken with my rig IF the rig is the only thing I am taking. I tried the counterpoise "kit" made of various lengths of wire and connectors--but had better luck using a 23' Sony SWL wind up antenna. Remember, the sunspot cycle is going downhill, and this antenna does not cover the new 60 meter band. Rudy Marcelletti, K8SWD |

Well--I have not seen any rave reviews on "Dave Edwards" tuners or other accessories!

All my MFJ stuff works as advertised, although I have had to do some tweaking here and there on occasion. Rudy Marcelletti, K8SWD ----- Original Message -----

They appear to work OK although not as well as a full sized antenna of course. I've never compared it with any other similar sized antenna. de Nigel G8IFF On Tuesday 15 July 2003 14:27, chris wrote:

What is the primary purpose of the short antenna? Is it going to be used for a covert type antenna? Give us some more input then we can go from there. If you want it for camping then the pac-12 CAN BE MADE IN AN EVENING. YOU CAN BUILD IT WITH A COIL FOR EACH BAND OR MAKE A BIGGER COIL AND JUST TAP THE TURNS FOR THE BAND YOU WANT TO WORK.73 Bob AF2Q |
