Digirig and Z817

Steve R

I was looking at digirig for a possible replacement to the Signalink. I am curious how if it is possible to run digirig with the Z817 in configuration. It appears that the digirig uses the accessory out for CAT control. Accessory out is also the control cable for the Z817.

Is it possible to use the FT817 with Z817 and connect via digirig for data (Manual or Bypass Mode)?? Does anyone have the digirig ?

Doesn't that tuner have pass through for PC control?

I have vague memory of 2 ports on the rear.

Yes; it is possible to use a digirig interface for the FT-817
simultaneously with the Z817 tuner.

The Z817 has a pass-through port for CAT control of the FT-817 by
additional devices.

On the back of the Z817 one port is labeled "Radio" and the other "Computer."
The "Radio" side connects to the FT-817.
The "Computer" side connectsto the digirig.

I can send pictures if that's helpful.

The digirig works nice. My only gripe with the FT817 is the audio
comes into direwolf a bit
on the hot side, but I have never really seemed to have any issues
with it not decoding
packets as a result.

Pat ....

Are we talking, Windows,? raspberry pi or Linux? Could you please post pics, or email me pics.? I've had difficulty with the digirig? working with the 817nd and z817.

Thank you,

Is WolphiLink still available?? I have one of those in my kit and use it with android phones or tablets and a bluetooth keyboard.? It somehow suits working with a portable rig like an 817

Also, consider a small manual tuner with your FT-817.? I have spent a couple of years using them.? The convenience is nice if you QSY a lot, but they are less efficient than air core coil tuners.? The ferrite can resonate and get hot on certain solutions and waste lots of power.? I have seen this with the SWR drifting with high duty cycle modes.? The drift in SWR is due to the cores heating and changing values.? I have even seen smoke come off the cores when I had the lid off.? I was transmitting under the rated power.

The physical size reduction availed by using toroidal versus air core coils in tuners does have its downside!

Knowing the tuner's load tuning range and the approximate antenna load presented to the tuner will go a long way towards preventing such core heating issues - easier for the former, less so for the latter, especially if using some random length of wire on a variety of bands.

Necessary addition:

...the moral being "A low SWR 'match' doth not always equate to everything being peachy" ?

I prefer the Signalink simply because I have analog control of both input and output. Much more difficult with PC controls...
