5 MHz wideband mod - is there some official Yaesu software.

My FT-817 is 19 years old and did not come with 5 MHz TX.

I am aware of a software mod which I prefer rather than a hardware mod.

Is there official Yaesu software for doing the mod?

If not, what is the best/easiest 3rd party software?

Thanks

Ken

It's been a lot of years since I use the program but Widebander worked great.
(This is only for the non ND model.)

FT-817 info and Widebander download /w instruction available here:

Hi Ken,

Thanks for the info and link.

I read that early ND models can also use the software mod. My 817ND dates from early 2004. I read that it was only around 2010 that the software mod was removed...and 5 MHz was probably included as standard by then??

Its hard to believe that the 817 series has been going over 20 years!!

It is a remarkable little radio - far less sophisticated than the modern portable SDR upstarts, but very capable and a lot of fun at a fraction of the price. Mine travelled all over the world with me, but it now sits on the coffee table next to my La-Z-Boy recliner and allows me to check band conditions without having to get up and go to the shack - both its days of globe-trotting and mine are now over! :-)

The "widebander" software is in the files section of this group. If yours is the right model version.

I never heard of it working on ND models but It won't hurt anything to try Widebander. It either works or it doesn't.?

Many people tried the software fix on the ND models before giving up and accepting the only option was changing the solder blobs.

Mine is an early ND and the software fix worked fine on it

How old is your 817? It needs to be early manufacture, pre2010 at a guess, for the software mod to work. If it is younger than that you will need a magnifying glass and a fine tipped soldering iron. The American FCC weren't happy with the way Yaesu's original 8xx series rigs could be so easily tampered with and forced the change.
