450mA???

Mike Maiorana

If the receive current of the ft-817 is truly 450mA as our friend from
Japan has said, I seriously doubt I'll buy one. I had heard earlier that
the receive current was around 150mA.
I wonder why the disparity in these numbers?
Regards,
Mike M. KU4QO

If you read the fine print, I think you will find out when you turn off the
back light it drops substantially. Same problem with the IC 706.

It has 150ma rx draw on switch on with no volume and 450ma at full
volume
(who runs a rig at full volume) ?

That's pretty high alright, but about what I expected. I'll probably buy
one, but as more of a "pocket 847" rather than a serious manpack/QRP rig. I
already have plenty of those anyway, although I'm always on the lookout for
another.

Has anyone actually confirmed this?
I guess the numbers make sense. About 3 watts dissipated at full volume
(1 watt or so of audio out).
Anyone?

Cannot remember where I seen figures but it should, if I remember
correctly draw 150ma on low to medium vol levels ok if you have cans
on or are listening with a quiet background. But also bear in mind
most handies draw similair currents and run of approx 4 AA cells ,
the 817 has 8 AA cells. Personally this has not deterred me in the
slightest. Thank goodness Yaesu have had the decency to add an AA
holder as opposed to a custom sealed ni-cd pack or similair. We all
know the AA battery is now an industry standard in most applications,
the technology is slowing to ideas of shrinking components with low
consumption. This leaves it wide open to battery manufacturers to
take over. Again watch this space , My guess is that we will see an
AA Li-on cell with voltage to 1.5v as opposed to 3.6v (as present)
with excellent amps per hour possibilities, hence a good life for all
us FT817 user's.
Regard's John.
