The 817 was run in a mobile situation using a Terlin outbacker mounted
high up in the centre of the dual cab diesel - the only mod to the rig
was the inclusion of the OBP in the factory supplied mike.
Incidentally, I tried with the OBP on and off and the general reports
supplied was that the OBP was worth two S points over the standard
mike setting. I guess most manufacturers set their S meters to around
5 or 6 db per S point, so the OBP was certainly equal to a
considerable gain in output power.

So, dont be concerned about going mobile with the 817 - it does the
trick very well indeed.

And, for those who may be interested - the VK travellers net operates
for about an hour each day commencing at 0300 UTC - it really is worth
a listen if that sort of thing takes your fancy.

Happy with my 817? you betcha!
