[allowed] Re: remote working 817

One Big Punch, a compressor board add-on made by W4RT.com. that fits inside
the mic casing. Pretty slick, I am considering getting one myself.

Hey Brian,

What is OBP?

I guess this post is a word of encouragement to all those 817 owners
who are overly concerned about output - antennas and being heard in
kilowatt alley, es[ecially when mobile.

I have just come back from 2 weeks up north travelling some 5000 kms
and never failed to make scheduled contacts either on 40 or 20 metres.

Regular morning and evening scheds were arranged and on 40 metres I
was still receiving reports of 5 & 8 from blokes who were running no
more than dipoles at 20 feet and at distances up to 1500 km.

Each day contact was maintained with the VK travellers net on 14.116 -
not once did the little rig fail to make a check in.

The 817 was run in a mobile situation using a Terlin outbacker mounted
high up in the centre of the dual cab diesel - the only mod to the rig
was the inclusion of the OBP in the factory supplied mike.
Incidentally, I tried with the OBP on and off and the general reports
supplied was that the OBP was worth two S points over the standard
mike setting. I guess most manufacturers set their S meters to around
5 or 6 db per S point, so the OBP was certainly equal to a
considerable gain in output power.

So, dont be concerned about going mobile with the 817 - it does the
trick very well indeed.

And, for those who may be interested - the VK travellers net operates
for about an hour each day commencing at 0300 UTC - it really is worth
a listen if that sort of thing takes your fancy.

Happy with my 817? you betcha!

It can also be installed internally in the 817. I had it installed
that way when I had my OBF(One Big Filter) installed. I figured s
long as they had the rig for OBF, why not let them do OBP as well.
It also reduces RFI problems eith the OBP when installed internally.
