FT-817 and D-104 -- Why? + URLs

Bob-

A number of folks use the FT-817 as a QTH radio, so they want a nice
"substantial" QTH mic. The D-104 has held a place of honor in the 11m
community as well for years now... the audio is just _That Good_.
Unfortunately they're catering more and more to the 11m market, with
things like echo boxes, etc....

For those curious to know what a D-104 looks like:

And Astatic's schematic for the D-104:

Hi Gang,

I was just wanting to know why someone would buy a very small radio
then fit it up with a *BIG* MIC. I was told they don't work well but I
never bothered to see how they sound with a new solid state rig. I
have a new never used D-104 i'm selling if this is what you FT-817
owners consider a mod. No plug on it and it has a Amp with some
switches on the bottom.

Mail me direct for more info.

The D-104 with the ceramic or crystal elements do not produce good audio
with the new digital radios unless you can shape or equalize the output, and
it's my understanding that Astatic has discontinued the production.
