Birdies on VHF/UHF of the FT-817

Demetre Valaris - SV1UY

Hello all,

Has anyone found a fix or cure to this problem? I get quite a few
birdies on both VHF and UHF bands on my FT-817 when I use the rubber
duck antenna, and some are also present when you use an external
antenna or no antenna at all. Same thing happens when I put a 50 OHM
terminator on the BNC connector.

Has YAESU acknowledged this problem yet?

Has anyone noticed this problem or is it just me?

Hello Demetre.

I also have this problem.
My FT817 should arrive back from Yaesu today.
I sent it to them for a Power output problem and Birdies on HF also.

I'm writing up my experience. I will post it on the group shortly.

I have noticed birdies on 70cm (432.625, 433.400, 434.175, 434.950, 435.725, 436.025 (strongest), 436.525, 437.300, 438.100, 438.900, 439.700) and so. They get weaker beyond 440 MHz. The ones on 436.025 MHz, 438.100 MHz and 438.900 MHz do open the squelch, all others are relatively weak. The 438.900 MHz is in particular annoying as it is a repeater output in Germany. The birdies are rather broad, resulting from the synthesizer and all occur with all antennas disconnected, PC switched off etc... I have noticed above birdies with 4 different units so far. I haven't checked VHF. It seems that we have to leave with these birdies so far or go back in time and carry the FT-290, FT-790, FT-690 and a K-2 over our shoulders.....Personally I prefer the FT-817, even with those birdies (and the other 29 on the shortwave bands...).

David,

Does your FT-817 also show birdies on 70cm (e.g. 436.025, 438.100, 438.900 and others)? I've noticed those birdies with 4 different FT-817 at the Hamvention but didn't get any comments or confirmation from other hams regarding this problem.

Which birdies on HF did you find? The one on 7.240 MHz is very weak with my rig.

Didn't find one at 436.025 but I seem to have the others you listed.

Hello Tom

I did not do an exhaustive search, I just reported the most obvious.
I found the following very loud ones:
3.895Mhz, 7.245Mhz, 28.873Hhz, 50.242Mhz, 144.215Mhz, 432.261

The Radio was connected/terminated into a dummy load.
After a trip to Yaesu they have been reduced by approx 25-50%.
(subjective), the service report indicated that
"chip capacitors added".??

Thanks David,

The birdies on 3.895, 7.245 and 28.873 are very weak on my FT-817. The
ones you mention on 6, 2 and 70cm don't appear with my rig. But I
notice birdies on 438.100, 438.900 etc. which are quite annoying. Will
check with Yaesu if those could be reduced.

73s Tom

Interesting, the birdie on 436.025 MHz is S9++ but only when I connect
the whip antenna. It's very weak without an antenna connected. Checked
with another radio, when I switch the FT-817 off the signal on 436.025
MHz disappears completely so it's definitvely generated by the FT-817.
