Powerport 12v 2.3Ah battery question

Hi everyone!

I was thinking of getting one of those powerport FT-817 fanny pack
pouches with battery. Assuming 5w operation, about how long can I
expect that 2.3Ah battery to last before a recharge (ballpark figure)

Thanks!

Frank

Frank:

Unfortunately, not as long as one might wish. Consider the following:

FT-817 Battery Capacity and Needs Calculation

Total mAh
Mode of Use mAh draw % time Minutes Per Hour

Squelched Rcv Only 250 5 3 12.5
Receive signal 450 85 51 382.5
Transmit 2000 10 6 200
TOTAL - 100 60 595

(Hope these figures line up properly).

Anyway, say about 600mAH draw per hour with a very light transmit
cycle (10% of time or 6 minutes). Remember, only about 50-70% of
the rated power is actually available; voltage drops and other
considerations make this so.

Sooooo, a ballpark guess would be about 3-4 hours, depending on xmit
cycle.

With the FT-817, you can't have too big a battery!!!

Very true. That's why I have two 6-volt, 220AH golf cart batteries(at
65 lbs ea), wired in series for 12v. Plus a 12v, 105AH deep cycle
marine battery(at least 25 - 30 lbs, probably more) wired in parallel.
All charged via solar panels. Piece of cake going portable. ;-(

(Leftovers from my QRO days).
