BNC antenna connector on 817

Howard Z

Just to let you know the 817 BNC connector (on the front ) is actually bolted into the aluminum frame of the radio so it is quite rigid , likewise so is the rear SO239 . I have connected long whips of 8 feet to my 817 with no side effects . I am sure you will love yours .

I have used the Maxon WTA-1 on 12meters
by adding a short clip wire to the top.
! Disclaimer: While the WTA-1 works well
for stationary operation, this antenna has the
potential of DESTROYING the BNC connector
on the FT-817 or any other radio if used
while walking around around.

Howard,

Tell us more about your 8 foot whip you use. Is this a commercial
product with a BNC on it? That would be by far the longest
commercial BNC connected whip I've ever seen. I looked at the WTA-1
Maxon antenna web reference but it contained no details. Needless to
say, we'll ALL be looking for new walk-around antennas. Dayton
Hamvention communications will NEVER be the same.
