817 in hotels and portable

Howard Z

Haven't really looked at adms as I will be using this product mostly stand alone . As for antennas I have built a beautiful multitapped 4 foot base loaded whip which works on all bands , I unfortunately hate base loading especially on "short " whips since the antenna becomes "voltage loaded" and produces poor field strength , the best hotel antenna that works well is a long wire (say 25-40 feet depending on the band ) with the MFJ "pocket sized antenna tuner and a 3 foot length of hobbyshop semi rigid piano wire (which bends in my suitecase ) and a suction cup , the piano wire is used as a fishing rod with an elastic band (for an insulator at the end )to hold the wire approximately 2.5 feet out of the hotel window away from the brick wall . I have worked many countries this way with 5 watts and the 817. For a powersupply I use an NEC cell phone 12V switching supply which is literally shirt pocket size , supplies a max of 650ma which is all that is needed since the batteries charge during receive and the TX duty cycle is sufficient to allow some charging as well (probably between syllables )

Hope this answers your questions

Thanks for the info Howard,

Is there an ADMS computer program for programing the memories yet. I assume
this will be written soon. What have you found to be a good small portable ant
to travel with?

Thanks,

Receive on AM is adequate better than an FT100 without am filter (Yaesu
really wanted you to purchase the filter for that radio ) seems to
separate
10 Khz stations ok . No case included just a shoulder strap which I
removed
, options include a narrow ssb filter and a cw filter ( I personally
don't
do alot of CW and the PBT works well .

Howard,

How is the receive on AM with the stock filter? I would also to use the
817 as a good portable SW receiver. Are their any other options for a
CW
filter than the high cost Collins filter form Yaesu. Dose the radio
come
with a case of any type?

Thanks,

since the 817 draws approximately 300ma on receive and the battery charges at 250 ma and taking into consideration that most of my operation (more than 8:1 ) is in the receive mode I use only a 12 volt 650ma (miniature cell phone )supply since the batteries remain charged , the 817 puts out up to the full 5 watts in this mode as the internal batteries are always connected to the radio even when on external DC . Think of the batteries as one giant capacitor in this application .

Howard,

Thanks for the response. I assume the suction cup is used to hold the stiff wire
to the outside of the window. Is the NEC PS/charger a current model. My PS is a
small 8 A switcher and I am looking for something much smaller that will provide
the 5W of output from the 817.
