Looks pretty cool but a lot more expensive than just a microphone. Maby some day..?

It's a 5 minute video of a man reading a web page describing a product he's never seen...
Thanks, but... it's like an unboxing video, except the podcaster doesn't have the radio in front of them to actually 'unbox'
I can predict the complaints already:
- power consumption (9 hours in 6 min transmit, 6 min receive, 48 min standby hours, so the battery is good for 1 hour (continuous) transmit, one hour receive, and seven hours squelched/muted standby?)
- active cooling availability hints strongly at overheating issues
- price - I think we're looking at a $1,500-$1,700 list price radio here... (comparable to IC-705 at $1,350)
This so-called "FT-817/818 replacement" really looks more like a low-power FT-991a with a battery pack & second receiver - all good, but not really a $700 FT-818 replacement.
We'll see how it plays out as we approach its "early 2025" release date.

It might be fun to have a pool on dimensions and weight, especially given that as near as I can tell the depth of the radio can’t be inferred from the size of the display in the pic, as height and width can.
I won’t complain without seeing one, and as a sometimes traveling satellite guy, I’d pay too much for that feature. ?
But I’m ?guessing maybe near a couple kilos with a fan and tuner and battery, and that’s quite a bit.
But happy to see something’s coming!

Good to know if it's the same technology as it's predecessors (891, 991). Maybe just an external package upgrade and a colour display!?!?

It's an SDR radio, neither the 991a nor the 891 are SDRs, so not the same technology.

We’re an hour ahead of Tokyo and a day ahead of North American, so have
already seen some photos taken by attendees at the THF.
?
It is a SDR, similar form factor to the the IC705 i.e it resembles a remote
head that belongs to another radio.
?
It has a dual receiver and a large battery on the back, the battery can be
removed and a tuner clipped in it’s place, and if you need it, a fan module can
clip in where the battery was then the tuner can sit on top of the fan
unit.
?
There is a strong “brand” look to it – aspects of the FTM500, FT991A and
FTDX10 make the unit look familiar to Yaesu users.
?
I look forward to seeing it in the flesh and hearing what the new owners
have to report next year.

The 817 was $670 at its introduction in 2001, that's around $1200 today (). About the price of a midrange gaming computer.
|
The FT-818 when it was discontinued in Dec of 2022 was much closer to the initial FT-817 price from 2001 of $670 that it is to $1,200 today.
I can't find hard numbers, but I think the FT-818 was always less than $750, but I could be mistaken.

I hope that it provides a transmitter-inhibit input pin, and band data.? It will be a great radio for my VHF/UHF/SHF Rover station.

Too bad it does not have 222 MHz.? :-(

I purchased my FT-818ND in February 2019 for 2840PLN (polish zloty). I cannot find what was the exact exchange ratio between PLN and USD, but it was about 4-4.5, so we have about $630-710, and additionally I used Yaesu 50 EUR cashback.

Nor 70MHz for UK and a growing number of countries that allow 4m tx operation.

My guess is that it will be priced below the Icom IC-705 because there is no WiFi, Bluetooth and GPS on board. It does however have FT-101 sdr architecture on-board. The Xiegu X-6200 is a bit cheaper, but has no VHF/UHF implemented. I have made a pre-order as my FT-817 is almost 20 years old, but has never let me down.

AE5X has posted some of the new FTX-1F that are very promising as to the radio's features (YMMV -- just my observations):
- A tuner/linear jack that is used to drive the optional automatic antenna tuner. ?If this is the same as mini din on the 817ND/818 this would provide a voltage encoded band data and a transmit inhibit connections;
- Separate antenna connections for HF/50 MHz and 144/440 MHz antennas;
A GPS connection. ?Now is that for an optional antenna in or a serial GPS NEMA stream out or in? ?No sign of a 10 MHz GPDSO reference;?
- It apparently has full dual receivers with two speakers. This will allow it to be used as a satellite receiver for V/U, U/V;
- Looks like the same form factor as the FTM-500; and,
- Has a mount on the base of the unit (missing from the FTM-500).

There is a fairly good video on YouTube right now showing it at the Tokyo ham fair. They were able to video the front and back of the radio, looks like the video captures the AMU and cooling fan unit. ?Looks to be about the same size as an IC 705.?

This rumor of a new 817 updated replacement has been going around for a decade or more. Thats why the ft818 was such a disappointment, it didn't look like the 'dream' replacement at all.
