How to assemble an Collins filter + Board for FT-817/857 and save $$$!!!

Edited

You can buy a genuine Collins 500hz CW filter for about $103 (from Japan, UK etc.) and solder it yourself to an FT-817 compatible board made by Artur, SP6AB. He sells them as a service to fellow hams for $16. Contact Artur to confirm pricing and availability:?sp6ab@....?

I looked on Google Street View and (with apologies to the seller) that really does look a little suspect to me, especially given the price and quantity left in stock. Due dilligence may reward either way.

Yes, you will need to search and evaluate the vendors for the "Collins filter w/o board." I got mine on eBay from Japan for $103 but he no longer has availability. I can't vouch for this UK dealer and his price does appear to be "too good to be true." I provide the correct part number for the "Collins 500hz CW filter w/o board" so you can search for it. Good Luck!

Am glad now when I bought my FT-817 years ago. I had it sent to an outfit the name of which slips my mind but is no longer in existence and they put a CW board in and
a narrow band filter for SSB and retuned the rig.? That service almost cost as much at the radio. The SSB filter really makes a big difference.? I can switch it in or out as needed.? I sometimes run it?
with a 100 watt amp and an external antenna.? RM Italy was a place where I bought an amp from that's likely not there anymore and I bought a?
100 watt amp from an old fellow at the time who is probably dead now who made up kits but had an assembled working amp I could buy.? Didn't have any trouble
running the FT-817 through an amp and appropriate antenna and tuner.? Got an FT-857 later and dropped a narrow band board in when I didn't want to diddle with
amp wiring in the 817.

I posted two (2) vendors. Page down and look for the vendor in UK. The Collins 500hz filter (w/o board) is showing up overseas but you must search and evaluate reliability of the vendor. I give you the correct search term. The rest is up to you.? --73, Howard, W6ZZ

What other filters exist for the 817/818 rigs?

Looking at INRAD's old page I see a couple of options, though they are long gone.

CW: 300 and 500Hz
SSB: 2000, 2300, 2500, 2900KHz

I thought there was a narrower CW filter out there somewhere, but maybe I'm thinking of a different rig.? I thought there was a 100Hz option.

I dont think you would like a 100 Hz filter.? Makes tuning to find stations difficult.? I use a 300 Hz Collins filter in my FT817 and also other rigs with IF DSP with adjustable filters for CW.? I often use a 1.4kHz filter for tuning.

I have an FT857D that has a DSP filter. It will go down to 60 Hz width. I will tune in a CW signal at a much wider bandwidth, then narrow it down to 120 or 60 Hz if need be. Very useful. I wish the FT817ND had it.
