Remote control for 3ph AF22.

Hey everyone!. Im a long time lurker and posting now to ask all of you very smart people for advice on remote controlling my 3ph 440v af22 that doesnt have an NVR switch. I found that all the off the shelf solutions are for 240v single phase machines. And the only electrical work im semi comfortable with is changing a plug so i dont even know where to begin with this. Any advice on where to begin on this journey here would be greatly appriciated.

With much love, Taylor from Copenhagen, Denmark.

Taylor,

It is not too difficult but you can decide if you can handle this. There may also be a different solution by opening the electrical cabinet but that would be more involved.

You need a 3 phase contactor that is rated for your motor’s fully loaded amps and voltage. This is one example but not the one you need.

These are designed to turn power on and off to a motor and are designed to be controlled by a single phase relay. I am not sure if you common voltage is 240V or 440V but let’s assume it is 240V.

In that case you will buy a 3 phase contactor that is rated for 440V and FLA current of your AF22 that has a 240V control relay. Controlling the relay is like a light switch. In fact, this is exact setup I used to turn on/off my rotary phase converter for may yrs. A light switch on the wall that turned on/off the 3 phase contactor.

To complete the picture now you need a simple remote that controls a single phase load. You should have many choices in 240V. It is relay control so there is very low current.

If your AF has an electrical enclosure with din rail, this 3 phase contactor will just snap on to it. You can cut the power cord such that it remains connected to the wall outlet but now connects to the 3 phase contactor input. The machine end of your cord connects to the output terminals.

You will need to now add the remote that will control the relay of the 3 phase contactor. This will be a 2 conductor cable connected to the relay control terminals of the 3 phase contactor. Best option will be to bring that cable out and plug it into the remote controlled switch that is wall mounted or if possible you could mount it to the outside of dust collector cabinet.

Here is a 240V remote shown as an example.

The purpose of this message is to communicate the theory. Hopefully, this allows you to communicate what you need better to an electrician. If you intend to do it yourself, you need to consult with someone who is familiar with your local electrical codes.

Feel free to ask if you have any questions and someone smart will likely answer that ? I am not one of them but I like to help ?

One more thing. The cable should have an earth conductor. Ask an electrician but most likely earth can continue as it did originally. Let us know if there is a neutral wire in the power cable and whether it is used or not.

Thank you a lot, Imran! This is very heplful. I know all 3 phase cables have the 5 wires in them here. the 3 phases, ground and neutral. The af22 just has a regular male CE 3 phase plug on where i plug my own cable into so i assume it also uses neutral. See attached picture.

Wow, not much happening in there, Lol. I don’t know of any reason why you would have neutral connected anywhere. Disconnect cable, open the switch box and check. Should only have 3 phase wires and ground actually connected. Remember, if you accidentally swap any of two of the 3 phase wires the motor direction will reverse. Something to watch out for. Would not hurt the motor for short run time in reverse.

Since there us no electrical enclosure on the DC, you will need an enclosure to mount the 3 phase contactor and the remote control.

Not sure if you are interested but it would not be difficult to incorporate auto start on DC. Complexity depends upon how many independent circuits are used by the machines connected to the DC. Each circuit will require a current sense (CS) device. These have a relay that closed on current detection and have a set screw to set activation current to avoid nuisance tripping. Ones I use are around $20 in USA. These devices go around the single current carrying conductor. Apparently some CS devices can go around the full cable but I have no experience with those. I have zero issues using them on the single conductor. The relays in these CS devices are normally open and they can be used to close the relay contacts of the 3 phase contactor. Multiple of these can be connected all together and then to the contactor relay. You have to ensure that the CS relay voltage is compatible with the contactor relay.

Yeah i opened it and there are only the 3 phases and a ground wire. I managed to get a hold of an electrician who will hook it up for me when the contactor and wireless board arrive. I really appriciate the help!

Awesome. If you don’t mind please share the parts you used. May be helpful for someone following you in this quest ?

of course! Its just 2 aliexpress parts. The contactor seems to be out of stock now but its just a generic part.

Hi Taylor,

I tried Ali Express for electrical components and got junk. You may get lucky or not. I personally would buy used in USA (from electrical salvage retailers) before resorting to Aliexpress. I bought a used 3phase contactor for 10HP RPC motor and it was working when I sold it after 18 yrs.

Imran?
