Phase Perfect Selection

I may acquire a 3-phase saw with 7.5 HP (5.5 KW) motor. I¡¯ll need a converter to produce the necessary power.

Any reason not to choose the Phase Perfect Simple 7.5 HP converter, in favor of one of the other models?

I think you¡¯ll need to add some hp to your phase converter, when I was looking into it my rep indicated that I¡¯d need to over spec the HP.? Perhaps he was upselling me but I was going to add additional hp anyway.?

That is interesting, Andy. Was it the Phase Perfect rep, or the tool rep recommending an upgrade?

The saw I am contemplating has a ¡°soft start¡± feature, which perhaps will reduce the start-up current.

Phase Perfect has a ¡®Simple¡± model line, which has a maximum of 7.5 HP. Going up a size means a more expensive line.

Yep. Phase perfect. I called them directly. It¡¯s probably worth your time to give them a ring to make sure you aren¡¯t shorting your hp needs.?

Hi John,

I can only offer some general comments. I assume you have no plans to add a 3P dust collector or a 3P jointer with 10HP motor. If that is the case, I would inquire about the longevity of the 7.5HP unit vs a 10HP unit in your application and weigh it against the price difference.

In general PP is conservative so you are likely alright but there are 2 things to consider. One is the caps, they will certainly be stressed more in 7.5HP unit vs 10HP unit due to running closer to the ripple current spec. Second the 7.5HP unit will run at higher temp than the 10HP unit. Arguably, every 10C increase reduces the life by 1/2 (it can be a moot point if the life is reduced from 1000 yrs to 500 yrs). Also this rule of thumb really requires a bit more work (with use of appropriate activation energies) to produce more reliable results. Nevertheless, cooler is better than hotter for electrical devices and the fan should run more often when 7.5HP unit is run closer to its capability.

I have an old PP unit from circa 2011. I received it in 2017 and the caps have not been replaced. So you probably will be fine with the 7.5HP unit unless the OEM really pushed the design.

We can make logical decisions but only PP design engineers can answer this properly but even they cannot predict infant mortality, although hopefully that is covered by warranty.

I had the same thought few weeks ago.
i spoke with PP about getting the 7.5HP (simple). They told me it wouldn¡¯t be suitable for the 5.5kW Felder since it has motor break. (Or any other sensitive electronics)

From there I though to get the PTE 7.5HP, but the delta ?to the PTE010 is $500-600 and in the case I¡¯ll ever get another 3P machine that has higher rating or I¡¯ll add power feeder, I¡¯ll have enough power to run it.
