Phase Converter Wanted

I see phase converters for sale come up here occasionally.? Total load (3 separate motors) for my new machine is under 3hp.? Either 208 or 460 v works.? I think I prefer a digital to a rotary for the lower noise and easier mounting.? Are any available out there?

Some one here posted a pdf? where he subjected his phaseperfect to analysis? with an oscilloscope along with a rotary.? The rotary put? out smoother power and? could be adjusted the Phaseperfect? put out choppy dirty power

Cliff, after a zillion exchanges on FOG and off, the author of the analysis you refer to acknowledged that it was in error.

Jonathan, the smallest digital is:?https://www.phasetechnologies.com/pt007

Cliff,

?

I have corrected myself many times here but looks like I have to pay my dues for the bad info I put out. I never said PP had choppy output, I was incorrectly concerned with a higher voltage. A VFD on the other hand, by design, puts a PWMed voltage output. This is where a transistor (IGBT to be specific) is turned on/off (10KHz is common) to conserve power expended. This is the reason that a VFD can be the side of a loaf of bread and weigh nothing compared to the size and weight of PP. It does appear that PP is getting smaller and lighter though. Here is a scope plot of my VFD. Yellow is the voltage and green is the current. As you can see voltage is discontinuous (on/off) and current is continuous. Motor runs fine as long as current is continuous.

Mark,?

Your comment made me laugh.? Sure, the discussion here has been thorough but you should see the Hardinge sites! It is a trickier application because of a 2 speed motor and multiple other motors.???VFD's don't like downstream switching or multiple unbalanced loads.? A single source converter looks to be the most practical except for cost. Phase Perfect quoted about $3000 for a 7.5-hp.? The PP rep also said they were testing a new 5-hp which should be available end of January and sell for about $2000.? ? A 5-hp American Rotary with some extra filters is about $1000.? An industrial Yaskawa or AB 2-hp VFD is about $300 of which I would need at least 2 and a clever work around for the 2-speed motor.? All put out acceptable power.? The motor in this machine is specialized and finely balanced on high spec bearings so need to be careful.? It's not so much the cost but more the proportion of cost of the converter to machine. If I had multiple 3-phase machines the decision would be easier.
