Hi All, Well I have apparently spun a cutter head on the shaft. Not sure how this happened as the stack was very tight and I know have the last spacer above the top of the shaft. my guess is it wasn't high enough. I got the cutter off but I cant get the lower spacers off. So what route should I take.I can see the slightest burr on the shaft. That is why I assumed I spun the cutter.
Go figure I was having my most productive day in a long time. Thanks In advance. Glen

Glen Bet you won’t do that again!! I would file off the burr with a fine fie, just the burr you will be fine maybe a little emery cloth only on the spot. Mac,, Designing and building for 50 years

Been there, done that. ?In my case the cutter itself was spin welded to the shaft. ?I had it pressed off at a machine shop (something I could do myself now), but the shaft was so badly damaged that it was scrapped. ?The Whitehill cutter survived and still in use. ??
If Mac’s suggestions don’t free up the bushings, take the spindle to a local machine shop.? David Best - Sent from my iPad

Glen, Sorry to hear about this accident.? I'm trying to understand what you mean when you say that the last spacer was above the top of the shaft.? So the cutterhead was mounted on the spindle, perhaps some spacers below it, then you had spacers on top of the cutter head stacked to a height such that top of the spindle was below the top of the spacers?? So the top-most spacer wasn't fully in contact with the spindle?
|
The top spacer has to be enough above the spindle so the recessed rim of the cap contacts it when tightened down.? There can be times when everything appears tight but the cap is contacting the center of the spindle but the rim isn't putting enough pressure
on the spacers.? Dave

Whenever I put the cutterhead on the shaper, I follow the following instruction. James

Thank you Mac and David. This morning I went and bought a super small file and emory cloth and bingo. It worked great. I don't actually thing I really spun the cutter but there was the slightest little burr on the shaft, so the cutter may have moved a bit or there was something else going on i will make sure that I check when putting that last spacer on.. Glen and others you need to be?meticulous with set up , ?make sure all bushings are clean no dirt or burrs they all have to be handled carefully . A Nick or burr in the sandwich can also bend the spindle. If you drop bushing inspect carefully . Mac..

Use a dab of grease on the shaft and cutter bores when you assemble them, it will keep the metal from galling as it slides onto the spindle.

Is it okay to use light oil instead of grease? Some of my cutters are so close that I have a hard time putting them on the arbor. I have used pneumatic tool oil (because it is handy) just enough to help me install. I spread with finger so no dripping. Anyhow, is this okay?

Yes, anything to provide a little lubrication will keep the metal from galling. I prefer some form of grease though as it tends to sling less on the inside of the machine.

The assembly grease you can get at auto supply stores (specifically for crankshaft journals during engine assembly) is good for this application. It is relatively thin, and comes in toothpaste-like tubes.

Brian, Thanks for that tip. I thought about that in the past and just thought it would attract more dust. Would white lithium grease be ok as I happen to have that for the forklift? Glen

That stuff is super sticky and thick, not sure it would be the easiest to work with and clean up after. A small tube of thinner grease, some engine oil, or like I posted, my favorite is the Castrol stick lubricant.
