I’m on the fence, about choosing a parallel fence.

Hey F.O.G.

I’m in need of a parallel fence to use with my K700S. ?Unless you make your own, I see only two marketed ones to choose from, Felder’s version vs Lamb’s version. ?I see pros/cons with both. ?Please remember I’m a newbie and still learning what these machines are capable of. ?Just reaching out, to you seasoned slider users, to see if I could ask what your preference was for a parallel fence choice. ?And if there’s obvious things to consider when making this decision. ?Thank You members!

Wade

I have both and prefer Brian’s. Its lighter and simpler to use. I have the digital version, not sure if Felder makes one or not. The Felder version I have is analog. I still use the Felder as a base to support plywood panels without the fence part.

Felder sent me their parallel fence for free as part of the thanksgiving promo sale that happened just after I ordered my k700s. My shop layout doesn’t allow me to use the parallel fence in its fullest capacity since my planer is in the way. I mainly use mine as an extra material support with plywood and as a butt bar.?

If you put your K700 on feet you may be able to get the parallel guide to ride over the planer?

Not a great pic do you can see what I mean with the planer being in the way of the parallel fence. The support itself is fine, it’s only a problem when I try to use the parallel fence attachment past 10” or so.?

Dan,

If the planer is causing the support fence not to clear, does this also mean you don’t have the capability to straighten line a full sheet of plywood that is 4’ wide? ?That would be a bummer for me. ?I process a lot of sheet goods.?

Wade I have 5’ of clearance both in ripping and crosscutting a sheet of plywood. Not the most ideal situation but my L shape shop layout means that all machines with long in/out feed need to be lined up with the longer 40’ leg of my 1000 sq ft L shape shop layout. That includes the 16" jointer, 24 3/4” planer,?
And slider. My wide belt is oriented to in line with the shorter leg of the shop.

Hi Wade,

When I purchased my KF700SP in 2018, I looked at the Felder version of the parallel fence and determined it is too delicate for my taste. ?I was afraid I would hit the tail of the guide or walk into it and damage it. ?I have not checked it out since, so I don’t know if it has changed. ?I elected to go with Brian’s digital parallel fence. ?At the time it was a more robust option. ?Put simply, it is a quality addition to the saw, along with Mac’s clamps. ?I use the parallel fence in conjunction with the digital stops on my crosscut fence, then use Mac’s clamps to secure the stock to the slider before cutting. ?Proper setup all but guarantees accuracy.

Good luck,

Alex

If you don't think Brian's parallel guides and mac's clamps are worth it, use your saw until you do. It took me something like 2 years to get to the light!

I have the Felder version, seems to work good enough for my intermittent use, if i used it all the time i would probably want to go to the expense of DRO like Brian offers. I rarely if ever use the table on it’s own as it always seem to be in the way

A couple of questions, do you intend to use the cross cut fence in conjunction with the parallel fence? Or are you looking to use just parallel fences alone? Do you prefer digital or analog?

I think the usage scenarios are what dictate the need. If you constantly rip long lengths but at predictable and constant widths like say for cabinet carcasses, you could make static parallel guides for very little cost and they'd be dead on accurate. For more flexibility, you could get by and use the crosscut fence with one adjustable parallel guide and be well equipped. To save space (if space is a constraint, it is for me), you can take off the crosscut fence and use two parallel guides.?

For additional repeatability and accuracy, you can go digital but at a big price jump.

Hopefully these considerations can help you arrive at a solution that works for your needs.?

I think I already have the extension table (430-104) for the Felder parallel fence. If someone wants to sell their fence (because it doesn't fit, or they bought Mr. Lamb's) let me know.

I’ll sell my Felder fence. I only use the table part since I got Brian’s. Not sure what for a price though.

I read Help and found the Private button. If I click on a name, nothing happens. Maybe it's different for Chrome on Windows 10. Anyway, Private solves it.
