If it ain't broke don't fix it.?
I've been in other groups who 'upgraded' The net result was two groups, the hind of the old group and the new one. Both declined over time.

I too am grateful for all the time and effort spent by John and Brian, and all the contributors for the wealth of knowledge shared here. That said, I'd happily move over to a better platform and kick in a little to cover hosting costs. I've been active here a dozen years maybe, and I haven't posted a single photo or video. I'm pretty computer literate too, and take woodworking related photos daily. Not being a Yahoo user just makes it too cumbersome.
I mentioned that I'm part of numerous private groups on facebook, none woodworking related-I do have hobbies. Sharing media there is effortless, even from my phone where it is captured in the first place. It does not address the archived information issue, but as far as I'm concerned that's already gone because I can't access it easily as a non Yahoo user. A shared Dropbox or Google drive could cover that and the Flickr media.

I think FB groups should be out of the equation because: - searching is near useless - impossible to reference older post easily and in a clean way - topics are ordered in a near random way - impossible to correctly format comments/posts - have to click to see all the content - impossible to ever get the data out of FB

I¡¯ll say this,
I feel weird even expressing my oppinion based not that I do zero to see that this forum exist, coupled with knowing that Brian and maybe others put much of their personal time and maybe money for all I know into the forum.
With that said and in reference to the Facebook forum comment up thread I feel the need to express my lack of interest. I¡¯m really not a fan of social media. At only forty years old I¡¯m thinking maybe a few of my peers and a few senior to me might feel that same way. I¡¯m just not interested in having a online presence floating around allowing others a glimps into my life. Yes I know I can set the profile to private. I also feel once it¡¯s in cycles space it¡¯s no longer my property and anyone¡¯s property. I just don¡¯t feel good about that.
I can¡¯t agree enough though that sharing photos is a pita! I really don¡¯t contribute and even come here looking for answers unless I have exhausted my mother options as it¡¯s a pain In the butt.
I can¡¯t help but think maybe that is the intended purpose os staying yahoo groups as it weeds out the riff raff possibly? ?

I agree that Facebook groups are not appropriate for FOG. I am involved in
a Facebook group and while you can easily attach photos and videos, it is
impossible to search for an old post the you need. I think it is for a
completely different type of group where current information is shared and old
information falls by the wayside.

John and I have talked and I think we¡¯ll try changing the options on the group to allow photos first. If that seems to work well and goes smoothly, then I¡¯m not sure I see a huge need to move off of Yahoo.
If we decide in the long run to change platforms, then as John says, we¡¯ll run concurrent using Yahoo and a new one until we are sure that the change doesn¡¯t kill the group. I do belong to one software group that has a Yahoo group and a forum powered by phpBB and anything posted on Yahoo is mirrored on the forum, that might be an option at first until everything is migrated.
Just an FYI, Yahoo used to be tons better in the photo section, back when we first started I set up folders, with sub folders and all that sort of organization and it was worlds easier to find photos. At one point in a Yahoo re-org, they shit canned all of our folders and it destroyed the whole photo album portion. It seems this is the biggest bone of contention for most users, they can¡¯t find photos. Hopefully allowing photos with posts and the associated linking that I think we¡¯ll get (have to wait and see) will alleviate most of the issues.

Hi,? As Brian just mentioned we¡¯ll try changing the options so photos are allowed. Just made the change. Had two choices HTML with attachments to email. (I picked that one). And HTML with links to attachments. Let¡¯s see how this goes. We have a mature group but with all attachments beware that something could come from a member who¡¯s email account was hacked. ? Also be judicious with what photos you post. Not all of us want to see 1000 pictures of David Best¡¯s vacation when he was a ¡°Professor¡± (I use the term loosely), with Semester at Sea a few years ago. I¡¯ve seen them. J? ? Take care, John ?

John, thank you for your reply. ? Of all the groups I participate in, the one I find satisfies every wish list item I¡¯ve heard here is the Hobby-Machinist group. ??
I don¡¯t know specifically what platform software/service this is on, but I can probably find out if you¡¯re interested. ? I encourage you to join the group, and look around and maybe try it out. ? One of the things I find convenient about it is that if I see a posting and I want to have a private dialog with the original poster, I can do that from within the posted message - that way I don¡¯t have to go off to an email app to send them a PM. ? The service supports inclusion of video and images in the posts, those all get archived and are searchable based on a variety of elements with lots of filtering options (use name, date, popularity, etc.). ? Users can set up to have all the postings reflected to them via email, or just selected postings based on a ¡°watching flag¡± that¡¯s easily set when you view a message. ? Some of the sub-forums are supported by vendors, others are not. ? Any user can contribute to the group financially, or offer to help with administration. ??
Hope this helps.

They use Xenforo, way over my head, $140 for the software, $50 install, $60 for media gallery, $60 for Resource manager, and $50 for Enhanced search (all yearly charges and you still need a host service). Then it looks like you still need PHP or MySQL¡ I dunno over my head.

Hi David,? I¡¯m looking at how that is set up now. Looks good but I think there are some costs involved that Brian mentioned. The nice thing is that the messages can be sorted by subject. Have to look into this more to see all the pluses and minuses. ? Looks like the picture thing is working but I did notice for people that get the DD, pictures don¡¯t come through. ?Not sure what else we can do there. ?

? ? But point me in the direction of one of these other groups with the better platform and I¡¯ll take a look at it so I can see what the benefits are. We¡¯ve seen other FOG type groups come and go over the years. We have to be 100% sure that this would be the right move.

Yes, it¡¯s not free. ? But I¡¯m certain there are enough among us on FOG willing to contribute to more than cover the costs mentioned in Brian¡¯s post. ?This attitude that it has to be free is so 1930¡¯s. ?Get over it already. ?Plenty of people here have already said they¡¯d contribute. ? I give $250/year to Hobby-Machinist and would easily do the same here for a better platform.

If people are interested, I can setup a Discourse forum this Friday so people can test it out. I tend to favour Discourse because of how easy to reference older posts, which is, IMHO, a very good feature for a group like ours and it has a strong text editor.?

I will be happy to contribute also,
On the other hand I don¡¯t want to twist anyone¡¯s arm into doing anything they don¡¯t want to do with a website that is not mine to influence with my desires.?
I don¡¯t have the time to do anything but drop in from time to time so who am I to say what one should or should not do.
When I need the web site it is an invaluable resource. I have no immediate need for it but as soon as I do I¡¯ll sure be glad to have it.
A couple hundred bucks a year to help it be more user friendly is a small price to pay. If the site moved to something more user friendly I would be more than happy to send a check to Brian make a small PayPal payment or whatever..
Best, Patrick Walsh?

I seldom post and have been lurking for quite a few years now and read every thread I can. I'm just a hobby woodworker with a CF531 multi-function and a 510 band saw. More times than not I have no idea what you guys are talking about but I still get lots of valuable information and appreciate the willingness of the members to share. I have the pneumatic clamps and several other after market tools that I never would have found if not for the folks here. All that being said I am also willing to contribute financially. Although Yahoo is not the most user friendly site I will follow wherever the FOG ends up and that includes staying right here if thats what you all decide. Thanks guys and keep up the fine work you do.

I am willing to pay to play, I get way more than I give here so a money contribution seems only fair.

I would also be willing to contribute. But what matters more to me is the way conversations are delivered. If I have to go to a website and carefully scan every new topic that's been posted to extract the parts that are worthwhile, that's a poor use of time. Eventually I'm going to be unwilling or unable to spend that time. That issue is precisely why I look at the Festool Owners Group (among others) only every week or two, but I keep up with the Felder Owners Group every day.
The big advantage of email delivery is that email software is highly optimized for dealing with hundreds of messages a day, sorting them out into what's important and what's irrelevant, and even saving (locally) the stuff that's crucial for future reference. The Web forum software that I've seen is far slower and more cumbersome.
Those of you who've been around for a while may remember the heyday of Usenet newsgroups. Software like trn ("threaded read-news") allowed me to sift through thousands of postings every day, displaying the threads I wanted to follow automatically while deep-sixing the rest (without preventing me from going back to search for them and look at them in the future if I changed my mind). All with a user interface that was concise and INSTANTLY responsive, because you never had to wait for a message to be delivered. If such a thing exists for web forums, I'd use it enthusiastically, but I just haven't seen it. In the meantime, email delivery with a website fallback is the next-best option.
Those of you who use tiny screens without keyboards as your only interface to the Internet probably feel differently. For you I can only recommend voice-controlled AI. :-)

Allen,
I hate to leave emacs -- http is ruining the internet.
But I do think most forum platforms have email delivery, and I don't think this group would be interested in a platform that didn't have email message delivery.

I agree with every thing you said. And I, too, am willing to contribute to whatever is decided. This site has been my best friend on more than one occasion.
