Euro Guard on K700 #sawsetup

I've read a few older posts about this but I must say, I sort of regret not getting the overhead saw guard on my K700s. The stock Euro Guard II doesn't work too well especially if there's a hose connected to it. The weight of the hose, even when suspended in the air, can deflect the guard making it a pain to use.?

I'm wondering if someone here has been able to make (force!) the stock Euro Guard II work well enough for daily use?

I'm asking so I can pretend to exhaust all options before I break down and just buy or make/adapt a non-Felder version to the saw.?

BTW, this is the non-Felder option I've been looking at:?

It's made by a Taiwanese panel saw manufacturer (clones of Euro saws) but they have a pretty neat dust guard which I think is 95% bolt on. The only modification would be the placement of the arm, relative to the extension tables, to match the Felder dimensions, but otherwise the mounting is conceptually the same. If it costs me $500 and couple of hours of fitting, it would be a good option, price-wise, mee-thinks.?

Here's a video of it in action:?

I forgot to add -- I'm in comms with the manufacturer about a cost for the guard and to ship it to California from Taiwan. If someone else is interested in it, we may be able to get better pricing if quantities increase.?

Sang,

I also have a K700S (34" side table capacity) and may be interested. My original Euro guard is marginal. I'm in SoCal.

Let me know what you find out.?

Here is another option that works well for me?

I saw the Grizzly (and Sawstop, plus a few others) but worried about bevel cuts. Do you just push it up out of the way for those? The slider specific versions I've seen have two guard attachments (like the Felder version) that allows you to switch between the two. That and an integral connection to the saw frame were key considerations for me. Did you attach it your saw or just free-standing? I also wondered about the clearance of the stand.?

I use the Grizzly unit on my K500?

The blade guard support stand is freestanding but I did put a few Tapcons into the floor to secure it. The clear blade guard is quite wide but it is easy to raise it up above the blade and lock in place or move it out of the way

You're referring to the riving knife mounted?guard correct? We've found that a tiny piece of sand paper folded over the riving knife before screwing down the thumb screw on the guard will keep it in place pretty well. We do support the hose from above as well.

That is correct. I will try sandpaper and see if it makes a difference for me.?

JP - great photos, looks like a good solution for your setup. Adding to my list of possible options!?

I bought the saw stop overhead guard for mine. Had to drill 4 holes in the out feed table. Fits great no complaints?
I paid just under $700 Canadian pesos for it?

Yes, I am interested as I too did not get the Felder guard.? Does it come with the supporting arm and mounting hardware?? The Grizzly hardware type system looks like it would work; is the Alibaba design similar? I could not see much of the arm and supports in the videos.

Thanks for your work on this for the FOG.

The design by Grizzly and other similar has been around for around the last 8 to 10 years. All made offshore. Why not price the overhead unit from Felder.?

Robert - I uploaded the parts diagram shared by the manufacturer here, if you're curious about this:?

/g/felderownersgroup/files/Temp/OAV_Overhead_Guard.pdf

When I evaluated the drawing, I saw that it comes with the supporting arm and hardware, including the interchangeable dust shrouds (for straight or bevel cuts). I think it could be made to attach to a Felder saw with small modifications (such as the hole mounting pattern and adjustment for placement of the arm, either forward or aft of the factory mount point depending on actual dimensions). You can't really make out the dimensions on the diagram as it isn't a schematic but judging by the video, their sliders are quite large so worse case, cutting down the tube steel wouldn't be terribly hard.?

I have been looking at a Harvey Shark S-12 Guard, but the only way to buy is from China. It is also listed as a Axminster Trade S-12 overhead blade guard. It cost about $700.00. Does anyone know of a US dealer. Sorry don¡¯t know how to bring pictures over. This looks like a better guard then saw stop and grizzly. If any body has one please post. Thanks?

It's $1,361.00 before tax and shipping from Felder -- a bit more than I would like to spend on the thing, especially if there's an alternative at 1/3rd the price.?

Getting into Felder isn't cheap, but I'd rather spend those clams on things that I absolutely cannot make or buy from another maker. Like a bench top mill, but I digress!?

I reached out to Harvey too, but their response rate on Alibaba is not encouraging. OAV at least replied to me and sent me technical drawings. They did ask several times if I had one of their sliders...I was like, nope, just interested in the guard :)

$300?plus shipping for that guard seems like a steal compared to the Felder guard. I like that it comes with both shrouds. I'm definitely interested

I talked to the Harvey guy in China ( Ben Chan ? ).? I didn't pursue because the guard wasn't long enough to cover the blade and scorer.? Harvey doesn't look to build the same machines since they got into dust collectors but maybe I'm not looking in the right spot.? It did look to be a decent build.? They were willing to ship direct to me at that time.? Dave

Keep in mind that the Felder overhead arm is bolted to the saw chassis and looks heavier than this version. It also come with a second plastic cover for angled cuts. If you mod the intake, you have a 4" intake with way less turns that this version from Grizzly.

Did not happen yet, but I guess, it can stop a kick back at the start if it is lowered enough to avoid the piece to get any acceleration. I am not sure this version from Grizzly can do the same.

Not the same price as you said, but I am not sure it is an apple to apple comparison if you take into account all the features.

Bill

Thanks for the drawing and the support looks possibly adequate, and for $300, mods would not be a big issue.

I am definitely interested in a group buy.
