Comatic DC-40 questions

Getting ready to order a comatic DC-40 and had a few questions for the group.?

Is shop gear the best place to order from??

Any recommendations on 110 or 220v??

Any other things to consider or accessories to go along with it??

This will be a bit of a dumb question but I am assuming that it comes with a stand if you get the normal set up and the smart stand everyone here talks about is the upgrade??

I don’t think I could muster the extra cost on the smart stand since Im very much over budget on my new building.

It’s going on my kf700sp which I’ll finally be able to commission after all the delays in building my new shop. I have the bracket with gas strut. Thanks to imran (yes it’s still in the box from when you sent it)

Shop gear was great to work with. Fast shipping. No reason not to get the standard 110v unless you have a 220 outlet that’s more convenient. Don’t have the smart stand but I wish the had the longer horizontal tube. Get four of the split wheels. Very useful to use over the blade or left or right of it.
it’s really a great feeder.

Hi Chris,

If you get the 220V version, you can wire it directly to your saw. ?This eliminates an extra wire to a wall plug from the feeder. ?It also powers up the feeder when you power up the saw. ?Not need to have, but sure is convenient. ?I believe the comatic DC-40 220V feeder will work with either single or 3 phase power, though I would confirm that with the Shop Gear Rep.

I too had a good experience with Shop Gear and will purchase from them again.

Smart stand is worth the extra cash too. ?Unless you already have a stand, consider the upgrade. ?

My KF700SP is three phase 220V. ?This means the neutral conductor is not used. ?That means I can’t run a 110V feeder wired directly to the saw wiring.?

Good luck,

Alex

Hi Chris,

Glad things are moving along. Kyle at Shop Gear is great to work with, finally met him at AWFS.

Jack is spot on get the long tube if you intend to use it on the saw. I did get that for my SmartStand on J/P.

I hear recommendations for SS but before you decide on that ask Kyle if someone has actually used it with tilt bracket. Even if it works, pucker factor will be high and you want to make sure everything is solidly locked. The only drawback of SS that I know of (besides use with tilt bracket) is that wheels cannot be 45 deg to the table - it is either horizontal or vertical. I have never had to do this yet but it might be something I end up doing on shaper and my std. stand will do so.

Chris,
Agree with others that Shopgear is the place to buy, split wheels and the smart stand are well worth it - don't forget to order the height gauge, too!
It's not well known, but you can switch the motor to 110V or 220V and single phase or three phase by swapping around the inside wiring - Kyle has a guy who can show you how.?
Good luck, regards
Eric

My DC40 is reconfigurable with jumper wires for 3-phase 220V or 110V single-phase. ?Maybe something has changed, but the motor is DC, and the power supply in the feeder does the conversion. ?I know Shop Gear has a pull down selector for voltage, but that may just be a pre-configure jumper selection. ?Kyle at Shop Gear is terrific - check with him on this.

I have two smart stands ?- one on the shaper, the other on the jointer. ?The smart stand is great, but I would not want that version for a tilt-away bracket situation like on the KF700. ?With the vertical elevation post at the feeder end of the horizontal tube, you’re talking serious weight to be swinging up/down safely. ? I’m not even sure if the memo feature would stay locked if the stand is tilted upside down. ?If someone here has the smart stand on the KF700 tilt-away bracket, I’d love to hear comments. ?A longer horizontal tube is a MUST on a KF700. ?Kyle at Shop Gear is terrific. ?I second the vote for an extra set of polyurethane tires/wheels. ?If you’re willing to wait, Kyle can source one in grey instead of the s**t-brindle-brick red.

David,

I too have the concern with the memo function on the tilt bracket. To be clear that joint is lockable but I agree it is a bit unwieldy for the tilt bracket. Eventually, one may forget to lock the memo joint (as it is not locked in use) and that would be bad. Kyle had mentioned long time ago that a customer with tilt bracket was considering it but not sure if it actually happened.

Hi Chris!?

I have a KF700SP and have found the DC40 to be a great feeder. I tried upgrading to the Smart Stand, but it was enormously heavy (even with the gas strut on the tilt bracket), and ultimately best suited to applications where it doesn't need to tilt.?

Regarding selecting voltages, you can swap jumpers to convert it to any of the three options (120V 1ph, 240V 1ph, and 240V 3ph). My memory from chatting with Kyle is that ordering it as 240V 3ph checks a box for certain customers who need a particular certification regarding the power button. I have mine configured as 240V 1ph, which allows me to use a standard (in my shop) twist lock plug, and I have plenty of 240V 1ph outlets. It's quite easy to adjust the jumpers.?

The narrow tires are a nice addition to have for certain operations.?

I know the smart stand is hot, but I've got 2 of the DC-40s with the original "stupid" stands, and couldn't be happier.?
As for accessories, I took advantage of the half price sale on 8 polyurethane replacement wheels that Shopgear was offering recently with purchase of a DC-40. They definitely have a better grip than originals. These two are setup on shapers, and so far, not finding a need for the split wheels.?

I? received a DC-40 from Shopgear in the last week, and they were very pleasant to deal with.?? I have the ordinary stand, and it is just fine on my 2000 kf700s professional.? I can reach all the levers and adjustments from the working side -- with the extension table off of course.?? One thing I was concerned about was that many VFDs interact badly with GFI curcuits -- due to high frequency feedback the GFI thinks that it sees a short and trips, when there is not a short.? This has not been an issue with the DC40. ?? The cheaper ebay special that drives my spindle sander has this issue for instance: I have to run an extension cord to the ceiling outlet for the garage door opener -- the only 110 in the shop that isn't GFI.

I guess it's only $369.
I just bought one.
I'll report on it once I get it.
