cf731s planer feed rollers

well.? i thought the feed rollers needed adjustment.? while doing this it became apparent both rollers were not turning.? ron siebach at felder says it's a urethane covered feed roller.? it is accessed through an access panel behind the shaper.
what can i say.? fun.

not a feed roller sorry it's a tensioner.

It’s the friction wheels that drive the feed rollers. There are two, a large one and a small one. Best to replace both at the same time, the urethane tends to get old and brittle. Also, always leave the feed mechanism in the center where it’s disengaged when not actually running ?boards through the machine. The indentation on the urethane from the pressure against the drive wheel ruins the friction wheels.

Just replaced mine a few weeks ago. The most annoying part of the job is separating the machines. Replacing the urethane-covered drive wheel is straightforward.

Brian mentioned two wheels, but on my CF731SP I remember only one of the two (the large one) being urethane-covered. Maybe I missed something.

If you have a two speed planer, you will have two wheels. I’ve replaced mine twice now. First set within a few months of new because of some motor issues that allowed the machine to stall. The second set lasted about 18 years… just replaced them six months ago.

Huh. I do have a two-speed planer, but I don't remember seeing a smaller urethane-coated wheel in the chassis. I don't see one in my parts diagram, either, and my sales guy didn't mention one when I ordered the replacement for the large wheel.

Maybe there's a model-year difference? Mine's a 2004.

Could be I suppose, mine is a 2001 vintage machine and an AD741. Here is the page from my parts list, shows the two wheels.

thanks for the tip.? i always leave the planer with either the high or low speed engaged and thus shortened the roller's life.? i always also wondered what the middle notch on the speed adjuster is for, which by your explanation is apparent.? mine is a 2000 machine.? i will see if there are two rollers.? thanks all for the lucid explanations.

That will definitely ruin it in short order. Honestly, I’m shocked it’s lasted this long.

Here's the page from my parts list. Looks a bit different.

Part number 55 is the urethane-coated wheel in my setup.

That is definitely different than mine. Well, less rubber wheels to go bad, that’s a good thing.

thanks for the exploded parts diagram.? i would not be surprised if my machine is like that.? in talking with ron he only mentioned the one urethane coated rubber friction wheel so he seems to believe that is the way it was built.

You're welcome! I expect everything will go smoothly.
