Blade Guard for K3 Winner

After a scary-close call, I am looking for suggestions for a better-than-the-factory blade guard and dust pickup for my K3 slider.? The factory-designed blade guard hangs off the top of the riving?knife.? The top of the riving knife is above the blade.? This creates an unguarded triangle at the rear of the blade, at least at high blade settings, and permits dust leakage.? See attached photo.? The factory guard dust port is very small and not very effective.? I am also looking to replace my shop-made ZCI which had a short lifespan.? Suggestions appreciated.

Can you lower the riving knife? It does not need to be above the blade.

I had a Shark Guard on my old UniSaw. It was well made, but a bit fussy to use because my old saw did not have an actual riving knife. I had to manually adjust the height of the guard when I changed blade height. That is not the fault of the Shark Guard. My Shark Guard had the optional anti-kickback pawls.

I¡¯d look for an overarm guard instead of one that mounts on the riving knife. It is much easier to get it out of the way for set-ups and for slots and dados. I believe there are versions that do not actually connect to the saw.

Here is one example of a free-standing guard with dust collection. I¡¯ve not used it, so cannot vouch for it.

I have the Harvey shark S-12S guard and a Ramon Valdez zero insert.? Both work great?

Hi Jim - I¡¯ve got a K3 slider and I designed a ceiling mounted guard for mine that has integrated dust collection. I wrote an article on making the guard for Canadian Woodworking Magazine that you can find here.?

For the zero clearance insert, you should check out Ramon Valdez. His is by far the best for the saw. You can find him here?and on instagram?

Lastly, I¡¯ll take this as an opportunity to mention my Fritz and Franz jig which keeps your hands well away from the blade to avoid future accidents. You can see more about my jig on instagram here Ramon has an excellent video on my jig here? You can contact me by email (bedrosianwoodworks at gmail dot com) or DM me on instagram if you would like more information on the jig or would like to place an order.?

No, you cannot lower the blade guard-holding riving knife because that top section is where the blade guard is mounted.? If you set it too low then the piece you are cutting will run into the knob that holds the guard in place.

I have both of these as well.? The Harvey guard is an overarm guard, similar to the Grizzly one that someone else linked, however a bit more "fancy" (and more expensive) and with a different mounting setup.? It works pretty well, however for my basement shop the DC pipe that leads into the guard has to take a circuitous route and that almost certainly hinders its performance.

Ramon's zero clearance insert is also very nice.

Joe - Can you switch around the side windows on the Harvey Shark blade guard so that the expanded window is on the right side (to allow for Hammer right-tilt blades)?

Yes.? It comes with 2 "flat" side windows and 1 "expanded" window.? They come on and off without tools, and can go on either side.? I leave both flat ones on 99% of the time and have only installed the expanded one a few times when needed.

Premium Felder engineering!
Any guard that attaches to the riving knife will have to have a pivot point that is higher than the top of the blade for the same reason.? The Felder one just has to go a little higher still because the knob that holds the guard in place is bigger in diameter than that of the pivot pin itself.? But the Felder knife also has markings on it that tell you how high to set it based on the blade diameter, so it's pretty easy to set it correctly.

Yes.? U just loosen some screws and they slide in and out

I added an overarm guard to my B3, which would be the same as your K3.

I still use the stock guard when I use the power feeder.

Interesting - thanks Rod!?

I have a use (2012) KS700S.?I¡¯m considering adding the Felder guard (expensive long lead time but seems substantial), the?Harvey shark S-12S guard, or perhaps this is third option.?

This looks like the Sawstop setup that came with my other table saw. The hood is much nicer than what came with my sawstop, which has no wheels. I will check and maybe I can get just the hood to upgrade the sawstop guard.?

How did you mount the S-12S¡ Harvey is telling me it needs a back rail.?? Picture of your setup would be awesome.

FWIW here is my solution.? It's rigid and the build of the guard is high quality. Interested to see what Harvey comes up with for their blade stopping technology.

Jim, the first question is are you using a Frits and Frans jig because that removes the hand from having blade contact.?
