HS 950 and Metal Grinding

Hello,

I have a Hammer HS 950 edge sander on order and should get it either in April or May. I have a friend to who I mentioned my purchase to and he asked if it would grind metal; several months ago he started making knife blades thus his inquiry into metal grinding. My initial response was that if it had the right belt on it I don't know why it wouldn't but, that said, being new to edge sanders i thought I would ask the group if it could or if it was a bad idea. Thanks.

I own the HS950.? Before I purchased, I did a search for sanding belt options.? The only ones I could find were the standard aluminum oxide belts for general woodworking, so I ended up just buying the ones offered by Felder.? Some websites say this is fine for metal, other pages recommend silicone carbide.? You might inquire to sanding belt companies to see if they would make a custom belt.? The HS950 belt size is 150mm x 2515mm (which is 5.9" x 99.01").? You might be able to get away with using a 6" x 99-1/4", but tension might not be tight enough.

Thanks Aaron!

it might be a Felder disclaimer but just found this in their manual that I just downloaded:

"9.4.3 Prohibited working techniques

?

Prohibited working techniques are those which must never be carried out on this machine!

?

-???????Grinding of metal parts, e.g. planer knifes¡"

Mixing wood and metal on the same machine is not generally a good idea.? ?Sparks and wood dust aren't the best combination.

Metal grinding is also a very dirty activity and having a wood sander covered in metal grinding dust would be very annoying.? ?
