This years IWFS thoughts

Well another AWFS show is in the books for me.

Thoughts...? Random thoughts
  • Great to see people out having a good time!
  • Great to introduce my sons to the show/industry
  • The new hall is amazing
  • SCM has more money than...
  • Got to put many faces to names.
  • Fate only allowed for one day at the show - wish we could have done another day.
  • There were a bunch of show specials - more than I expected based on supply chain issues.
  • Martin stuff is just amazing - as always.
  • Altendorf F45 is better than I remembered, and cheaper than I thought too...$35k
  • I may make the jump to surfprep (or one of the differently branded clones) from festool - very interesting...
  • Got 3 Tenryu blades for the new saw - great show deal. And they have me a referral for sharpening that is "more" local to me.
  • There were less large CNC setups than the last show (from my memory)
  • Grex makes a large spray gun.? Top feed, but runs off a compressor...? interesting...? love their small guns for fixes.
  • Felder had the PCS demo - I was very impressed.
  • No Shapers at the Felder booth - bummer.
  • I did not see any shapers from other brands - looks like an F900z or F700z for me.
  • There were some absences.? but not a lot.
  • We met April Wilkerson- I expected a bigger entourage...? she was nice.
  • Found a new website to sell woodworking machinery with NO fees...? gonna give it a try.
  • no one was selling magic extra square feet for my shop.
  • lots of great debate around how to do things differently -which is why I really like to go to these shows.

Everyone was talking delays- not just Felder.? ?

There were a ton of friendly people there, next time these should be a FOG meetup!

Thanks for sharing your insights for those of us that couldn't be there but are interested. Any details anyone would provide, I'd happily digest, as I am tethered to the shop this week....

Brett,

I have a huge bag of 'stuff to look at and sift through.

Lots of information for sure.? We are driving home today to fly out tomorrow morning to Kauai.? It will be my plane reading.

Was set on going to the show this year - but the potential issue(s) of choosing/discussing the IWFS in Vegas vs. Vacation (with a potential layover in Vegas...for the show ;)) with the spousal unit was not one I thought wise to contemplate.? ?PK, thanks for your bullet pointed list - yes, that Martin and Altendorf stuff is drool worthy ;) and let me know when you find that magical floor space genie.

We went to the show and were both fairly disappointed. The huge machinery booths were still there, but most of the smaller people were absent, or had a minimal booth presence, less machines and not the usual variety.

It¡¯s always interesting to see all the hardware suppliers and Hafele, Salice, KV, and Rev-a-shelf had a booth about 1/3 the ¡°normal¡± amount of displays. ?Blum, who is usually the most interesting for us, had a huge booth, a couple of signs, with about three tables, a half dozen employees/salesmen and absolutely no product.?

Attendance was way down too, at least the day we were there. I usually have to stop and wait to get through the crowds with my wheelchair, and while I still had to dodge a few people who weren¡¯t paying any attention to where they were walking, it was never as crowded as most years. Reminded me of the terrible shows back in the 2007-2009 time frame.

It was nice to see a few friends and catch up, but the show itself wasn¡¯t what I would call a great one, no new and wild products¡ well, other than the Felder PCS saw, which was really nice, but I missed all the little new gizmo¡¯s we usually see from the upstarts. Was interested in seeing some dust collection and Oneida only had their little Dust Deputy shopvac stuff and one 4¡± plastic cyclone, no big machines at all. None of the other dust collection players were even there.

Hopefully in two years it will be back to ¡°normal¡±.
