Dust shroud for BF6 spindle moulder (shaper) #dustguard #repair

Seems my BF6 has half the dust shroud missing on the spindle moulder (shaper).

Felder has a spare for a mere ?200, seems a lot!

Anyone found anything to substitute for one or have a spare one?

I am thinking I'll just fabricate one...

Richard,
Fabrication would be the better option .
My 1992 BF6, pre dates the factory installed hood so lacked the mounting points for the factory hood, it always was a fairly fragile thing I recall replacing a few for other owners years ago.
If you have the skills and tools to fabricate it in steel then you will never have any future issues , though the shape is a little tricky to form.
Whether 200 would cover a fabricator making it for you I don't know but I would pay the extra to form it in steel.

Hi, are we talking about the clear plastic shroud under the table in the hole where the spindle moulder sits.
If so I bought one from Felder a few years ago and it cost about ?28!
You’re not the first I’ve heard that has been quoted a huge amount for a replacement, I think it’s a mix up and they’re quoting for the wrong part!
I’ll dig out my receipts tomorrow and give you the part no. And what I paid.
Yes Felder really charge for parts but come on... ?200 for a bit of plastic!

Martin?

Yes, its a clear plastic thing, the part number I was quoted ?162 + VAT for is

FR-ABSAUGHAUBE LT. Z. 78-07-345 GLASKLAR
MATERIAL: PC 3000 KOMPLETT VERKLEBT UND MONT

Felder parts prices are just bonkers.

Another example is the crosscut splinter tongue and holder. ?45 plus VAT.

The scale tape the runs along the bed is ?60 + VAT.

Richard,

I am in the process of re commissioning my BF6-26 after along period of less than ideal storage, so I understand the pain you are suffering with prices.

I've had to shell out ?51 plus postage for a planner table locking lever that 20 years ago was ?8.50.
I was quoted ?280+ for the top bearing retaining ring for the spindle shaft so it was cheaper to get a custom pin spanner made to remove it rather than cut it off.?
Initially I though it had fused on but actually it took just over 300NM of leverage to get it to release the 1st half turn.

all that being said Felder's parts pricing is not much different to most machinery suppliers, it is based on whether the part is still in production and used on a current machine or how many they have left in stock in the warehouse.

At the end of the day all the 6 Series machines are 23-30 years old so in many respects we're lucky that there is any support at all.

It has been noticeable how many of the 6 series accessories are now being deleted or the prices "uplifted" as the stock runs low. which feels short sighted,
You can not build a machine that is basically bomb proof and then be puzzled why people still want parts for it 25 years down the line!!!

I would kill for an outrigger table and swing arm now I am going to have the space but that's gone NLA in the last year.
S coupling power feed mount is another example there are only a few left and they are much more expensive than the F coupling.

If it would help I can take my metal hood off and send you some pictures? over the weekend ?

Thanks Again Paul. I was just hoping to restore it as near as new as possible with original parts but hey ho!

I'd like a high speed moulder spindle for router bits but I guess these are more than buying a complete dedicated table router!

This might help you - at least conceptually - on your jointer table alignment challenge: ?

Richard,

My sentiments are the same with my overhaul, factory parts if not the original restored, but the spares list is already over the ?700 mark and I need to be realistic about things like belts and bearings which can be sourced like for like from specialist suppliers.

As to the high speed router spindle, its something I have always had mixed feelings about,?
its good for those large cutters that turn the router into something akin to a gyroscope, big moulding cutters and panel raisers.
Its also pretty handy when you are trying to do something a bit exotic on profile shapes.

I found the 15000 rpm to be an issue on smaller cutters and it always did sound like it was pushing the machine to its limit running something at that high an RPM.

The big win was always the saving on floor space in a small workshop over accommodating a free standing table.

Yep that’s the part! I bought mine in 2012 and paid Felder ?23.50 + vat!!!
Bloody awful!
Another example was my control transformer packed in and Felder wanted over ?400 inc... bought one from RS electrical for ?33 inc vat and posted. ? ? ?Perfect!

Thanks David,

The BF6 is a lot different and a lot less obvious!

Your machine has those nice, easily accessable adjusters.

No such luck on mine.

I am gradually learning my way around it though.

Oh! Forgot to say, when I bought my machine with everything added as an extra it certainly wasn’t cheap and one fear I had was support and parts for the future!
They assured me that I wouldn’t live long enough to reach the time when that would be the case!
?I’m very disappointed that this has turned out not to be the case, a machine for a hobbyist or like me a small business producing quality renovation work bought with care was a huge investment that we were told would see us out. I’ve been in this situation for about 6 year’s now, not being able to get parts or paying vast amounts for nothing much. I can’t afford to re-tool now as I’ve only got about half a dozen years left that I can in visage being able to work left to me.. if I’m lucky. It’ll be ironic if it’s the heart of my workshop that forces me to retire earlier than I really can afford too!

Mine also was a stretch purchase when I bought it to start a business but worth every penny. Its also the reason I refused to part with it through thick and thin.

In our new world of sustainability, then the policy of planned obsolescence no longer fits.
Manufacturers are going to need to start to take this into account if they are going to retain there credential's in this area..
Only time will tell as you never see a Felder machine as spares or repair on Ebay or elsewhere.
So where do they go to die?
Simple answer? is they never do....

I would not hold my breath waiting for machines to become more sustainable.? My experience is the opposite.? Machines are built so their lives match those of the electronics and are seldom supported as long as Felder has supported the 6 series.? Keep in mind that in the days of the 5,6, and even 7 series, Felder was a small made to order supplier of very high end hobby level machines.? They were not made to compete in an industrial setting with Martin, Hoffmann, Kolle, or Bauerle.? Felder survived while others did not so they had it figured out.? Given the relatively small numbers produced and the lower use,? and? less industrial environment they lived in, there aren't many clapped out beat up machines to serve for parts and not enough market of those looking for parts to justify making new runs of old stuff.? Richard I finally got round to unbolting my hood this afternoon, so here are some pictures.

Bear in mind that the front mounting pints were designed for an early BF6 that only had the 4 studs to support the spindle moulder infill rings,
So on a metal hood for a later machine you could move the mounts back about 20mm.
