Felder F38 feeder repair
I have a seldom used F38 feeder that needs repair.? I set it up the other day and turned it on without a load or any pressure.? I heard some grinding, a crack, and two wheels quit turning.
Upon disassembly, I found two of the drive gears cracked and jammed in the chain.? I was able to get the cracked gears out, but I'm not sure how to replace them. The smaller drive gear is held in place by two snap rings.? I'm not sure how to disassemble the driven gear and chain, and then re-assemble both gears and the chain together. I appears that the wheel shaft must be removed to remove the the driven gear on this shaft.? Should I leave the driven gear and shaft in place and break the roller chain?? With such a short chain, there's not much space to break the chain and to re-assemble it. Any suggestions would be appreciated. By the way, I spoke to Felder.? The technical group couldn't help me.? They suggested that I send the feeder back for repair.? With the cost of two way shipping and the estimated repair charges, I can probably come close by buying a new Comatic DC-30! ? ?Dennis |
开云体育Dennis, i do not know anything about F38 but just a thought, is there a removable link on the chain? maybe that is what you mean by breaking the chain. just a thought. imran On Nov 1, 2020, at 6:22 PM, dyclist@... wrote:

Hi Imran,
No master link, they all look the same.?? I used to ride bicycles a lot when I was younger and did my own bike maintenance.? All the links in the chain are the same, so to remove a bike chain, you can "break" any link. If I don't hear anything, maybe I'll try to do this.? There's just not much space in the feeder to break and re-assemble the chain. Dennis |
开云体育hi Dennis, i looked at my vario4 manual and noted that it covers all models. i do not see any exploded diagrams. if you have any for your feeder you may consider sharing here. you may receive some feedback. imran? On Nov 2, 2020, at 6:52 AM, dyclist@... wrote:

开云体育can you share the diagrams? if it is a hard copy you can take pics of pages. lots of smart folks here (not me) who can provide insight. imran On Nov 2, 2020, at 12:07 PM, dyclist@... wrote:

Here's two pictures.? The F38 is about 10 years old,? Two of the drive gears cracked into several pieces when I turned the feeder on without a load
The drive gear is held in place with 2 snap rings.? The driven or wheel gear looks like it's held in place by the wheel shaft itself.? I will upload a diagram that Felder sent to the photos directory I didn't get a chance today to remove the chain. |
开云体育It looks like circlips hold the wheel shaft into the swing arm. You might have to undo those and slide the new sprockets into the chain loop and then slide it in as an assembly.
|
After thinking about Brian's response about the circlips, I unscrewed all of the springs.? With the springs unscrewed and after removing one of the speed change gears from the opposite side, I was able to remove the whole transmission.? Now it will be straightforward to replace the cracked gears.
I just don't know why two drive gears cracked.? Hopefully there isn't something else that caused this. Thanks everyone for the information! ? ?Dennis |
开云体育They probably got something jammed between two of the wheels at some point and cracked the sprockets. Could have been defective sprockets to begin with… hard to say if they are machined from solid steel or sintered from powdered metal without looking at one. Regardless, this isn’t something I’ve ever heard of in all the years, so I doubt it’s a frequent occurrence.
