Shark Universal Overhead Guard Model S-12S

I received a message from Harvey doing an intro offer on their saw guard.? At first look, it appears to be a reasonable copy of the others where have seen here, and takes 12" blades and 52" cutting width.? As I recall my 2004 KF 700s has a 51" cutting width.? At $949.00 + SST may be competitive.? I am getting too old to be an early adapter, but I'd like a better blade guard and dust collector.

I'd appreciate feedback.

I looked at the harvey guard some years ago because I though I could fit it on my old Robinson.? I'm not sure it will handle a 16" blade or a 12" with scoring.? If no scoring, it should work.? Dave

I checked with Harvey and with the 52" width, the 1-inch over the 51" width for the Felder should be okay theoretically giving room for a 1" dado, and more so with the tilting blade cover.

This style of guard and collector was the subject of much discussion not long ago.

The seed was planted that I needed a better way for my shop.

How does this unit compete when priced at $950 with shipping, less taxes to the versions that are available?

there was another nice looking one that was shared in that discussion sometime ago but IIRC it needed to be ordered from china. don’t recall if the poster got it or not. i believe one from grizzly was also being considered.

Hi Imran,
I believe I was the one mentioned going to look at it as I don't too far from Grizzly NW in Bellingham.? When I called, the person I talked to see if there was one on the floor he said thought so, but when asked about buying one, he did not find a part number for the entire unit.? That could mean it would be ordered part by part.? I expect the coast would be excessive, based on the usual cost of spare parts, and asked he please get more information.? I never received a reply, so I expected that it was a dead end, hence my interest in the Harvey unit when it turned up.? Scott and Sargent offers? I-TECH OVERHEAD SAW GUARD ASSEMBLY Part Number?ITWMPSGD for 595BP, plus shipping and possible fees and duty.? It appeared workable, but little information on mounting, no user review, and uncertainty on how it would " modified to fit...", I lost interest.?? The Harvey unit seems to have most all of the desired features; gas strut to help raise the hood, swivel away boom, crank adjustable hood height, a 6-way knuckle to align hood and support post to the saw, and fairly simple install instructions (drill three holes).... what am I missing?

Hi Robert,

Did you end up getting the overhead guard? I'm thinking about purchasing a used Minimax si 315 that comes with a crappy plastic riving knife guard, I definitely want to get something better. I'm waiting on a price from SCM for the optional one that you can order with the Minimax but when I came across the Harvey one it looks like a good option if the SCM one is overpriced.

The short answer is no.? Unfortunately I sustained two fall in the house and mangled my shoulders and can't do much right now.? I do expect based on moving the parts into the shop and looking over the install, that is will work well and is well priced.? And I expect it will work well, but need to to a trial run.

Hope this helps.? If you were in my area perhaps you would do the install and test for a reasonable fee? ;-).

Bob

I have one ordered, mounting it to a C-31.? I Will share when I have that in hand and installed.? Estimated to ship mid Feb.

I modified my riving knife guard and I love it. I opened the top up and shaped a steel transition to fit it well.?

I had the Shark Guard on my KF before I sold the saw.? Clearance with the pneumatic clamps is an issue.? Joe reports that his mod helps.? The other option is to make something like David posted a little while ago.

If I ever remake mine I will have even? more clearance for the clamps.? It was a bit of an afterthought in this version.

Sorry to hear about your shoulder injury Robert, if I was closer I'd be happy to help.

Joe, nice idea on your modification.
