Crazy Horse panel cart

This looks interesting and practical to me.?

I don’t do a lot of panel work and I always struggle when I do.

What do people who do a lot of panel work think? ?It looks like it requires a bit of room to operate.

I agree, most folks would find that extremely handy. As for room to work, I don’t think more so than any other method. Any time you start doing 4x8 panels it takes room, there is just no way around that.

Joe,?
How did you get onto that crazy horse dolly video???
Amazing and yet so simple.??
Thanks for sharing it.??

I have a 24x30 shop space which is still on the small side if you want to carry sheet goods in an out. I also have a need for a small cart just to have what is needed for a task, next to me. Like clamps, glue, drill or shaper spindle/tooling etc.

I think this smallish crazy horse with some mods may do the trick for big and small. Thanks for sharing.

Well interesting idea agreed but your floors better be flat and cleannnnn, you would also need a lot of no obstructed space.?
I use 4'x6' x 1" rubber cow mats butted together around machines so wouldn't work for me.
But in open space cool,,, he moves really fast!!

Friend of mine has a handyman who does work on his rental properties. ?I saw him wheeling around some panels on a cart like the Portamate but he made it himself out of a walker (yes, the mobility assist for old folks), some angle iron and some other cast off piece. ?Basically you could make two out of one walker and a couple small spare wheels. ?Darn clever, I thought. ?Next time I see him, gotta talk a pic.

David,

I get emails from Woodworking Network and it was featured.

Many thanks for that link Joe, it looks like a great resource.

I did not see this link in other posts, but this seems to be the website where one can select the Crazy Horse and then add it to the cart and then proceed to checkout! ?FYI.

For me, I do not have a lot of space in my shop anywhere close to what is on the youtube video. ?I store 4x8 plywood away from where my saw is located, and when I need to cut down a plywwood sheet, I then hand carry it over to the saw. ?My only possible alternative would be a panel cart as the width requirement is far less than the 4 ft plus clearance needed when the sheet is flat. ?When I am at the machine, being able to fix the slider and then position the panel is always awkward, and if this compact Crazy Horse will make that as easy as it looks on the youtube video in my shop where I have less space surrounding my saw, then that would be great!

I thought the dolly had provisions to carry the sheet vertically, long side parallel to ground. I doubt most hobby shops with a few large machines have the room to navigate the shop with 4x8 sheet horizontal, unless the saw is next to the entryway.

I did note on the video the ability for this dolly to permit plywood to be carried vertically, long side parallel to the ground. ?I sent an email to the guy selling the dolly asking about the issue of it's utility in a shop where the space surrounding the saw is limited, and this was the reply:

Thanks for your attention to the Crazy Horse dolly.? The?space is limited by the size of the material being transferred.??The dolly?is about 32" at it's widest and 28 1/2" at it's most narrow.? The footprint is a compromise between stability and convenience.? In the case you mentioned, the material is either very close to the saw in a stack, or some distance away due to the arrangement of the workspace.? In either case, the dolly will perform the task of alleviating the need for the operator to lift the entire sheet onto the saw.? In short, if there is enough room for the sheet to pass laterally through the space, the dolly will assist with little effort.? The sheet can be tilted up to about 45 degrees in any?direction as it is moving through a space?so as to avoid obstructions that?are protruding into the passageway.?
Some slider operators maximize the position of the material with the location of the slide in some remarkable ways, but I have not seen an application where the Crazy Horse would not be of some use and would either speed things up or lighten the load on the operator, or both, unless a pneumatic boom or such is in use, and even then, the boom is not much faster if at all, especially considering the ROI between the boom and the Crazy Horse.
Sliding saws are wonderful tools.? I love mine.? But the material has to be brought to it, and there's the rub.? This is what the Crazy Horse does like nothing else. I am somewhat biased, but I think every slider sold should come with a Crazy Horse.
Thanks again.? Please feel free to contact me any time.
Larry

I purchased the Crazy Horse yesterday. ?I would think that when you tilt plywood sheets on to the dolly, the dolly would just travel away, but it does not on the video and hopefully it will not do this or topple over when I am using it. ?If this dolly offers the combination of a small footprint, an easy way to move plywood from storage to saw, and easy positioning on the saw, then that will be great! ?I will let you all know my thoughts after I get it and use it a bit. ?
?

I’m looking forward to hearing what you think of it!

Good luck
Eric

I've also got my eye on this thread, will be interesting to see your thoughts. My current shop has bad floors which could make a difference....

Fine Interior Woodwork

My Crazy Horse dolly recently arrived and was easily assembled. ?With 6 swivel locking castors (similar to the ones I buy at Woodcraft), the dolly moves in all directions easily. ?The very low center of gravity makes this very stable. ?

As far as moving plywood, I was able to move 4x8 on the dolly long edge or short edge parallel to the floor. ? I do not have one, but I would imagine that a shopcarts tilting panel cart would be an even easier way to move panels with the tilting feature being a major bonus. ?The width of the Crazy Horse is 28.5 inches and a Shopcarts panel handler with tilt and hydraulic lift is 30 inches in width. ?If I had the room and a shopcarts panel handler, I think I would still benefit from the Crazy Horse to facilitate the transfer of the plywood from the panel handler to the saw and position the wood.

However, the main impressive feature of the Crazy Horse is the ability of this dolly to make it very easy to load and position sheet goods on to a panel saw. ?This dolly makes it WAY easier. ? As a bonus, it just barely fits right under the front part of my slider, a perfect location for storage. ? With this dolly and without having the major space seen in the online video, I am able to very easily load and balance a 4x8 sheet of plywood on the dolly and with the half dome just slightly higher than the slider, I can ?then very easily position the panel on the saw where the wood maintains nice contact with the half dome and the dolly then rolls to facilitate positioning.

As someone with no financial interest in promoting this product, I highly recommend it for those who work with plywood and want an easier way to load and position the wood on a panel saw.
