A bit off topic - Rough cut lumber in the metric world

Hi,
In the Imperial world, rough-cut lumber is sold in approximate 1/4-inch increments for thickness. My local supplier generally has 4/4, 5/4, 6/4, 8/4, 10/4 & 12/4 stock, with 4/4 being the most common.

Are there common or standard thicknesses in metric? Or are they still about the same thicknesses, just converted to metric?

--

-- Measure it with a micrometer, mark it with chalk, cut it with a Hammer

Everything I have purchased has been 40mm nominal thickness. (Western Red Cedar, White Oak and European Beech.) Local wood is often available in custom sizes.

Australia is a fully metric market.? That being said, the nominal sizes of materials are proportionally similar to imperial sizes.? I assume that is because the market is international and Australia is a small part.? Also the sizes are familiar and usable.

So, 100x100, 150x50, 200x50, 90x40, and so on.? Further, timber is sold by the cubic metre not board feet.?

S4S material is often slightly smaller than nominal and, depending on the supplier, bulk packs will be spot on or slightly larger than nominal.? Sheet material sizes will depend on where it comes from. Metric sources 2400x1200.? Non metric, 2440x1220.

??? My life would be simpler if 1/2" plywood was really that. And the same for the other dimensions.? I know I can buy precision plywood and I think many CNC shops do, but it's quite a bit more expensive, out here on the west coast anyway. I have heard that door companies demand that they get lumber of a constant thickness, as doors have to be made usually either 1 3/8" or 1 3/4" thick for standard doors. So I believe solid lumber thickness has been consistent over the years.? I wonder if anyone else has the same feelings as I? And while I'm complaining, does anyone else think that US made low end plywood has gone down in quality gradually over the years?? Tom Ruth

Tom,

In my small door shop in New Orleans the only wood that was delivered at a “constant” thickness was Accoya which is acetalized Radiata Pine. Accoya also came in specific lengths making order calculations very easy. ?All other lumber came is rough sizes in 1/4“ increments for thickness and random lengths. ?But those 1/4” increments were measured before the lumber was dried so 8/4 Spanish Cedar for example would be less than 2” thick in places and thicker in others. ?It was always a challenge to get 1 3/4” thickness out of the rough lumber to make a solid wood exterior doors. ?There is a lot of waste when making solid wood doors. ?If one is a small shop without good relationships with distributors then you get whatever wood they choose to through on the truck for delivery. ?

I did not work a lot with plywood but better quality plywood was available from distributors and could be quite a lot better than big box plywood. ?Often to get the best plywood one has to buy in bulk and buying a Unit of plywood is more than I needed as it would take me years to work through that quantity.

Plywood thickness in North America has been metric since the 70’s, as our standards organization went metric for thickness, but not for sheet size.

Most vendors list it as the closest Imperial size, for example 6mm listed as 1/4”, I have no idea why they do that.

I’ve worked both in the US and metric countries.?

A lot of furniture outside the US is made with American hardwoods so it’s all imperial and sold as the closest metric equivalent.?

What’s commonly imported in 4/4 (sold as 25mm), 6/4 (38mm), 8/4 (50mm) and 12/4 (75mm).?

Widths are all over the place and common lengths are 10’ (3 metres), 16’ (4.8m) and sometimes 20’ (6 metres).?
