Dust extraction recommendations.
I am renovating an old brick shed 6m x 6m (still in the design process) but I'm trying to work out what dust extractor / ducting to use. I currently have a Hare and Forbes DC-3 -???as a?temporary unit.
I have only now had the opportunity to have a shed and would like to do more furniture making and maybe sell a piece here and there on the side. I'm a one man operation so would only ever need to use one machine at a time. I have a AD941 with 5" outlet and have a KF700sp coming in a few weeks - also 5" ports on both saw and spindle - (I think). I plan to get a band saw eventually too. I would like to run ducting as per picture to the 3 machines + 1 to a drill press/ linisher/ spare for clean up.? I have been recommended to use 6" ducting and step down to the 5" ports on the machines.? my questions are 1) is my crappy dust extractor going to cope with this arrangement for the time being? 2) Am I on the right track with the ducting size/layout/method? Please any recommendations. 3) is it worth adding a cyclone to my existing dust extractor DC-3 to create a 2 stage system? Will I loose a lot of suction this way? (flexi hoses join the 2 systems) 3) If its not worth perusing with the dust extractor I have, what would you recommend - $~$3000ish AUD? I would like a 2 stage system so I can use the larger chips on the home garden/compost. I've been recommended to get a low volume/ high pressure vac for my drop saw - Kapex 120 + sander. hope this is right? Thanks in advanced.? Chris. Australia. |
Hi I have an AF 22 with class M filter on top and it works great for my CF 741 combo…I could have easily added another machine to it, and can be purchased with various sizes of connectors on top.? Plenty suction. For hook up use GI to machine with minimum flexi to each machine….keeps runs as straight as possible and blast gates easy to reach….also the power up of the AF22 should be from the machine, so some wiring back to main motor required, but well worth the effort. No remotes or forgetting to switch on. For me I decided to go 100% flexi for ability to move machine locations etc…and humidity rarely drops below 40%. But you may need to consider grounding your stystem. Do you run through steel ducting or just flexi up to the machine? |
1)The dust collector you currently haven’t doesn’t have a lot of power. The AD941 will need at minimum 600-700cfm and preferably around 800-900cfm. Your DC can’t provide those number. In addition the bag on your unit has 5 micron bug, which means it doesn’t filter the small particulate that hurt your lungs. I would upgrade just for the health benefit. You got a good advise going with high pressure low volume for the Kapex. You can go with something like the Feaool CT15 and add 36mm hose. |
I use that dust extractor with the Ad941 atm and it work completely fine (at my fathers house). You can take off the 2 x 100mm ports and use it as a single 5" . The extractor DC-3 is rated at 1200cfm - but i understand that these are often rated when they have no bag and no hose to get that reading. I was worried that it would reduce the suction too much adding a cyclone. I was tempted to get a fluted bag with the winding cleaner. Not sure if this would reduce the suction? does have more surface area to filter, but probably a finer filter so... To make my system work with my ducting, would a "genuine" 1200cfm machine be enough?

Chris, have a look at the Australian Woodworking sub forum on dust extraction as it is the best dust extraction information site in the world and will answer all your questions. If you can find a used Clearvue cyclone in Oz that is the best thing you will get here. Unfortunately new ones are now unavailable in Oz and the nearest spec cyclone from Taiwan is damned expensive. If you want a chat about what is available here send me your phone number via PM. I introduced Clearvue to Oz and was part of the team who set up the automatic blast gates now sold here.?

When deciding duct sizes, I square the radius of the duct and to see if it equals the sum of ducts that will be open at the same time. I found 7" is a good feed for the KF700, for example. It can have two 5" ducts open for the shaper:? 6.25 + 6.25 vs. 12.25. I'm using a 3Hp cyclone dust collector for the entire shop. Leaving the 5" and 4" KF700 saw ducts open all the time; it easily handles the AD941.?

Without going down a dark rabbit hole and getting into deep discussion about this stuff it all depends on the impeller size and motor speed. Any advice from the US can't apply to Australia because our 50hz grid supply means our motors run about 33% slower which is why all the Clearvues sold in Oz had 3 phase motors and the speed control was done via a VFD. A 3 phase motor controlled by a VFD gives far more options, for instance I run my 15" Clearvue at 70hz which gives a far higher motor speed and it easily supports two 150mm blast gates open at the same time. PM me Chris and we can have a chat on what works in Oz and what is available which is not a lot.?

Hi there, definitely won't be running 3 phase.
Looking at Laguna c flux 3, Clearview (looks too tall), Sherwood And any other recommendations... With the cflux bing 1 X 8" port, I can convert down to a 6 and 4" port ( just fit a design on the 3d print bed for this) maybe the 4" can go to an under shoot collector under sliding compound. Worried about restricting airflow down to 6" ducts to other machines. Maybe regulating the additional 4" port will help? Chris. |
