I'll just assume that this is no longer available, expert possibly used market. which i haven't really seen either. Is there something that work similar to the Distometer?

I have Shars 12” height gauge and use it regularly. It is massive and I expect the one you shared to be no different. If you intend to use it for shaper, a 6” model is sufficient. Many of these can be used on their sides as well for horizontal measurements.

Just something to consider, unless you truly need the 12” range.
If you're patient, you can do what I did. Which is to leave an eBay search running for Distometer, and then buy the only one that shows up in 2 years. I had to replace the foam in the case, but otherwise I'm very happy with it.?

This is what I used for checking cutter height on my Profile shaper. ?
I put it together from a Mitutoyo 12” mechanical height gage and a Mitutoyo 6” Digimatic DRO. ?The Mitutoyo Digimatic DROs are very good and their readouts don’t flicker. ?As a side note I have not used this height gage for over 4 years but when I picked it up the battery was fine and the display crisp and steady. ?A test that I find useful is to raise and lower a height gage to a reference zero surface about 10 times and see how it repeats. ?I just tested mine and it read very consistently between 0.00 and -.02mm. ?Plus or minus .01mm was more than enough for my purposes.
The tricky part of making the height gage was boring a hole through the scale but after that was done the heightgage worked very well. ?
Before I constructed my height gage (about 7 years ago) I searched and searched for for a 6” height gage to use but the compact 6” height gages were not very good from I-gaging, Starret etc. ?I bought a few and their displays flickered reducing confidence in the data. ?I was trying to reliably measure to .1mm and the flickering displays and not great scale to reader interface made the compact height gages unreliable for my purposes.
There might be a good compact 6” height gage available now, I stopped looking once I had the shop made version in the photo. ?Just so you know if you want a really nice height gage they don’t seem to exist in less than 12” versions which are just too big to be useful on a shaper and very expensive. ?
I also used an Igaging dial gage to determine depth of cut. ?I mounted the dial gage on a 1 2 3 block which I would place on a partially cut profile and measure the difference between the input and cut profile to determine depth of cut. ?Between the I gaging dial gage and the height gage I had no need for a Distometer. ?For depth of cut I was always shooting for 1mm depth of cut so measuring with the 1 2 3 block and dial gage was a quick check.
The Distometer is a nice measuring tool but it had its problems. ?The original Distometer only read from one side I think and when Aigner fixed this with a new larger DRO that I think faced front and back (?) they started having troubles with sourcing the displays and stopped making the the Distometer. ?
Would there be a market for creating a Distometer knockoff? It's basically a mounting frame for a caliper with magnets in the base. It is possible to 3D print something that would have similar capacity using a COTS digital caliper. The only feature that would be hard to replicate is the Distometer's ability to hook the sliding foot under a cutter. I haven't used that feature yet, but I'm a novice user.
Any thoughts from the group? I have the Distometer here to copy. Clearly I wouldn't have anything to gain from it, but it might be a useful service to the group.?
