I believe you said you live north of Seattle but I'm not sure. Tried
to look your location up under the member info but must not be doing it
correctly. Anyway, I have to be in Bellevue this coming Sat.
afternoon. Thought that if you are somewhere around the Lynnwood area
I could look you up Sat. morning and bring some blades along to test on
your machine if you would like.

Re: Shaper cutters

Thanks for the tip on the Freud groovers, Art. I have been perusing a
Freud catalog and have had my eye on those groovers, especially the 1/4
& 3/8" x 6" OD or the 8" OD. I have checked "Abbey Tool" prices, which
seemed pretty good, but I'll also check "The Leading Edge". I thought a
groover cutter would be nice to have when making slip or "bridle"
joints. I not sure whether the 8" OD is necessary though.

Take care, John Taylor

Re: blade noise, motor speed,hz and amps

John Renzetti

Joe, for cutting panels with the 100mm scoring blade I'm limited to a ten
inch blade. I switch regularly between the rebored Forrests which are 10inch
and the 300 and 315 blades I have from Felder. I really haven't noticed the
difference in noise level they are pretty quiet.
While I'm posting one thing I should have added to the motor specs I
found was that they are 4kw and 3 phase.
Talk to you later,

John,

Are you running a 10" or 12" blade on your machine? I would imagine
that the dB levels specified by Felder for noise levels are measured
with the 10" (250 mm?)blades.

The motor on my KF7F is rated at 14.5a at 240v 60hz and 3400rpm at
50hz
it says 15a and 2760rpm. There are different pulleys and belts for 60
and 50hz that get the arbor speed up to around 4000-4600 rpm, not sure
of the figure. I'm wondering if the 15amp figure is wrong and should
be 14a, since on the AD7-41 and the AF22 the amperage draw is higher
at
60hz.
I know that on the regular AF22 Dust collector, motor noise became a
problem with the higher rpm at 60hz vs 50hz. On my AF22 the rotation
at
60hz is 3360 vs 2780 at 50hz. The newer AF22LN has a 3kw motor and a
smaller diameter fan resulting in much lower noise.
I haven't noticed any noise problem on my KF7. Turn in on, and it
just gives that nice tone, a lot different from when I turn on the
unisaw.
As far as not needing the transporter unit with the mortiser, what
Phil Tamarkin failed to mention was that he also didn't need a
forklift
to get his 3000lb BF5 off the truck. He just picked it up himself.
(Only kidding Phil)
The transporter does make things much easier with it attached to
the
jointer planer. I could see where you may not need the transporter if
the mortiser was attached to the K7 or the KF7 machines. Here it may
not get in the way, especially if the joy stick was taken off.
Geoff's machine is loud simply because it's his punishment for
calling me on the phone and telling me to listen to the lack of noise
coming from his dust collector.

Re: Table saw blade noise

Mark Rupersburg

Geoff;

Wow, 98dB is loud -- maybe loud enough to get a visit from OSHA or the FAA. I think a
jet at full-throttle is just a bit over 100 dB!

Does the value change depending upon the position of the pickup?
With a change in blades?
Without a blade?

When insulating, you may have to use a heavy material (like lead sheeting) in addition
to typical fiberglass batting. Both dampen vibrations, but at different frequencies.
Another technique used in sound-proofing buildings is to use 2 layers of drywall
separated by strips of metal.

If the numbers are correct, I think you've got a heck of a noise problem that's going
to limit your hours of work.

Good luck,

Mark

This evening, I managed to borrow a sound-level meter from a musician friend
at work. Here are the results of measuring some of my shop equipment with
the meter mounted on a tripod at operator position/ear height (or 1m as
appropriate):

Phasemaster MA-1, 60dB (manual states <70dB).
Oil-lubed 26 gallon air compressor filling, 81dB.
AF-22LN, 77dB (manual for original AF-22 states 82.5dB).
Fein Turbo II vac, 68dB.

BF6-31:
Jointer, 77dB (manual states 78.8dB).
Planer, 80dB (manual states 81.8dB).
Saw, 98dB (manual states 83.7dB).

Except for the saw, everything is reasonably close to what I expected. By
the manual's numbers and my experience with other cabinet saws, I would
expect the saw to sound not too much louder than the jointer or planer.
Maybe it's the blades, or some other factor.

Re: Table saw blade noise

Charlie Norton

Wow...98dB is loud. I do not have a sound meter, but I can't imagine that
the saw on my machine is 18 dB louder than the planer. If the sound meter
computes dBA, perhaps the higher pitch of the air whoosh noise registers a
higher sound value for the same noise power out.

Did you average several readings? I wonder if the saw measurement was made
at a particularly loud location.

Re: Table saw blade noise

Tom Gee

I've been reading this thread and have a few thoughts:

Motor speed: The motors' information plates on my KF-7X lists speeds for
both 50Hz and 60Hz operation. It also lists two amperage figures. I
presume that the larger of these is the maximum (locked rotor?) amperage
and the other is the no load amperage. If I weren't 2500 miles from my
shop, I'd include the all of these numbers here. However, I'm sure that
they're listed on all of the newer machines. Maybe someone who has a
machine close at hand could look and post the numbers.

Drive pulleys: I seem to remember that the parts catalog lists different
pulleys for 50Hz and 60Hz operation. In addition to being away from my
shop, I'm also away from my parts catalog. I think that I'll have to
start worrying Wolfgang again to see if I can get him to attempt to
convince Felder to provide the parts catalog and owner's manual on
CD-ROM in searchable PDF form... Just what the poor man needs, a
computer geek as a customer. :-)

Motor speeds: Although I can't quit remember the RPM figures on my
Felder, I do remember that many motors of the type found on woodworking
machines operate at 3450 RPM. I seem to remember that that's a 'magic'
number in motor design, though I've completely forgotten why.
