I have the AD951, probably 5 years now. During this time, I’ve pushed it hard, with rough sawn hardwoods; often running Jatoba and purple heart. The machine serves me well. My sense is that it is a better planer than jointer, though this is just an impression I have.

The power drive is precise. I’ve added extensions to the planer bed. Dust collection is good, though I dislike having to changeover the dust hood position when changing over the function. Also, the fence is Cumbersome, with it’s side attachment point, and setting a miter is functional, but inelegant and?without a fine adjustment. As with other Felder equipment I own, I feel that most?elements are professional grade and well thought out, while others seem oddly?lacking.

If I was in the market again, I would look at what?Martin has to offer (if only to rule it out for this or that reason) ?-?my understanding is that Griggio?makes a machine?for them),?then the SCM machines. I have no knowledge of either of these. The thought of going separates is ever-present, but never wins against space and cost.

There are a handful of users here who have the SCM FS-7 and seem to really like it.?

I am using the SCM FS-52es and I really like it. It has the same capacity as the FS-7, but with less complexity. My machine has the Tersa head and I prefer it to the spiral heads. ?

I have had the Kundig Uniq since 2010 and at $7500 it is a bargain.? New prices in 2010 were around $15K.? I had a power feeder functioning as an auxiliary dust collector after upgrading to a CoMatic DC40 so recently added a power feeder bracket as shown in the photo.? There are termination points and spare cable glands already existing in the electrical cabinet so powering the feeder was easy.? Kundig had previously discontinued the bracket but will make it to order and it was less than I could have had one made.? Thanks Imran and Jacques...did not know that those dados will work on a shaper...do I treat it as a "normal" shaper when placing it in the shaper or other precautions / pointers?

I am not sure what particular model was for sale and I do not own a Kundig. ?However, I am familiar with the features of this brand. ?When comparing certain Kundig models to Hammer and large older units, there are certain UNIQue features.

?

With the infeed and outfeed fences along with the ability to move wood along the table, you can have the edge sander function like a jointer, only for edge sanding. ?Like with a jointer you can adjust the amount of removal. ?This way of sanding allows you to edge sand boards without a length limit while lowering the footprint of the actual machine. ?With the actual sanding limited to a small area at a time, that greatly facilitates dust collection. ?I have seen a massive edge sander in use and what a dust making machine! ?For machines where the fence flips up, you can have access to more of the belt similar to models that do not have fences.

Certainly they are more expensive than a Hammer but I think they along with Langzauners are very different machines. ?I included a link to a demo video.

150mm duct with a 15" impeller @ 60hz simply works and no calculators required and it is proven by every unit I sold which was a lot of Clearvues. The 16" impeller Clearvue we specified with an 8" main duct and 150mm off that to each machine and the port on the machine for both size impellers needs to be opened up to 150mm at the machine for maximum air flow. There are a lot of CV's in Oz and they all work using those specs. These days I have a different view on things, I would use a 17" impeller with a 3 phase motor which would be controlled by a VFD for speed control. Doing that means you would get far more air flow than needed and then using the VFD the speed could be wound back on the motor and the air flow would still do the job but it would be a lot less noisy. I would not buy a single phase dust collector for a bet because the 3 phase motor and VFD combination offers so many advantages such as soft start, low speed air scrubbing when machines aren't being used, unlimited starts per hour etc. Just remember the smaller the impeller the noisier it will be because the motor speed needs to be higher so using an impeller which is effectively oversized means a slower running speed for an effective air flow.?

I have been using two 250mm (10 inch) ripping blades (FS Tools) stacked on the spindle to cut longer tenons. I am using the Hammer tenoning hood on my B3. Works well for my hobbyist use.

Not to be that guy, but having owned both the Kundig UNIQ and the Hammer HS950 they are light years apart.

The Kundig new these days is $25k plus options.? So if the machine is in good working order it is a steal.

The Hammer HS950 is a great unit and a bargain but it is not a Kundig Uniq.? The Kundig weighs in at 1300 pounds, I believe, and the fit/finish and quality are top notch - as in Martin like.? The belt will oscillate almost 4" and the accessories are well thought out.? Plus the dust collection for me is really good compared to all other machines I have seen/used.? The Rehnen SK-1, SK-2, SK-3 have really great dust collection also, but no bed tilt is possible on those machines.

Is the Kundig Uniq worth $25k plus accessories and shipping/tax for a hobbiest shop?? Probably not, but used at a great price, it will give you many years of pleasurable use.? The same argument can be made about any of the machines we own.? Is a kappa 450 x-motion worth 3x the price of a K700?? I think so, but many will not.

Also, the resale on a Kundig is usually pretty strong.

8” will work on saw and shaper. If you have a need for deeper than 3” depth of groove on shaper then you need 10” or 12” dado and both require tenoning hood. I plan to make my own tenoning hood out of plywood, which most likes not meet any safety standards

I recently bought Ridge Carbide 8” box joint dado which does 3/16 to 7/16 dados and depth of cut is just under 3”.

The 220mm Felder rebate heads I have, are also about 3”. I cannot get a narrow groove though as they are 31mm tall.

Just thought I mention it. I wish someone made a 9” dado so we could take full advantage of 700 series shaper hood.

Michael, You are correct.? Like PVT there are always other factors, sometimes known and sometimes unknown and even unknown unknown. That's why the curve is king.? I size fan systems for lumber dry kilns.? Fans and drives are sized based on the math and experience and we always round up or "oversize".? We normally use VFD's in lieu of across the line starters (both are similar cost) so speeds can be reduced when tuning the system on start-up.? This saves power operating cost, overdried pockets AND keeps us out of trouble with the customers.? Math is important but experience avoids problems and produces the most cost effective solution.?

Betty Crocker used to add a note to the baking instructions for high elevations.? We live at 4000' where water boils at 204f so mostly ignore this factor.? I do take 1 club less on the golf course though.
