Re: OT: What totally unexpected things you have found in the shop
Story about carpenter bees. Our family moved from California to rural Australia in 1964. In 1968/9 my parents built a Cape Cod styled house from plans published in Better Homes and Gardens in the 50's. It was constructed with Douglas fir framing with Western Red Cedar 2x6 ceilings shiplap siding and shake roof. All imported from California. I was visiting in the mid 1980's and, on looking up at the Cedar cathedral ceiling, noticed lots of tiny pin holes of light like twinkling stars On investigation, there were circular holes in the end on many of the shakes on the roof. In many cases the holes had gone completely through three layers of shakes and 2"of solid Cedar.?? We called in the CSIRO (Commonwealth Scientific Investigative Research Organisation).? After a week of checking they came up with carpenter bees as the culprit. Possibly imported from the U. S. with the timber (although already present in other parts of Australia).? The house was fumigated and then a new shake roof was layered over the old one. My granddaughter wandering around the back of the house.? Happy election week guys. (Kidding). Uncle Clint. Excellent new video demonstrating straight-like ripping and parallel fence work
Fellow FOG member Steve Rowe just posted an excellent new demonstrating straight-line ripping and parallel fence work on the slider.? Steve, I feel you pain on the weight of that timber.? I just started a new project myself using a 12-foot stick of Cocobolo that's 3?" thick and I needed to enlist the neighbor to get the stick into the shop - guessing it was 150+ pounds.? I too had some bogging down even with 10HP motor.

Re: Shop videos
开云体育I do a LOT of shop still and video photography. ?Although I have a full studio rig for??work, I don’t bring any of those cameras or lighting into the shop - ever. ?Instead, most of my shop work is done with an iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPad Pro, and a Canon EOS M50 Mirrorless for vlogging. ?I find the iPhone newer models to be absolutely fantastic in terms of image quality, and is what I used exclusively for my recent??on indexable tooling.??I like the Cannon M50 for blogging because of the flip-out screen that moves to the side rather than over or under which compromises use with tripod or on-cameral lighting. ?This way I can see the composition while making videos with me in the frame and still use it with a mount underneath or with hot-shoe lighting. ?If I had to make the choice today, I might opt for the?Osmo Pocket 3 like Paul has because of the subject tracking capability. ?If I wanted a compact interchangeable lens DLSR for vlogging today, I would probably go for the Sony?Alpha ZV-E10, although I haven’t tested it. ?Still looking for a mirrorless DLSR with a body in Mauve. To me, one of the most important and often overlooked aspects of shop photography is how to hold the camera (if not handheld). ?Although I used tripods for studio and field work, I detest using a tripod in the shop - simply because they are difficult to position and set up, and are a terrible trip hazard, all because of the splayed legs. ?Instead I use a Manfroto setup with Super-Clamp (that I can attach basically anywhere) in conjunction with an??system, ball head and Arca-Swiss quick mount system. ?You can see this setup in this video: ?? For those who don’t know, the??system is a dovetail-type quick release mount that attaches to the threaded tripod mount and allows for quick release and moving the camera from one mounting setup to another without lots of fuss. ? In addition to the articulating arm system, I use a really sweet desktop tripod () with ball head that converts to a selfie stick as shown below. I use this with the??(although there are other similar brands) with the Arca-Swiss mount for quick release. ? For camera work on machines, I have adapted the Arca-Swiss quick mount to the Noga Mag Base units with articulating arms as shown below. ?I have a number of strategically placed steel plates overhead which I can use as mounting points for this Noga setup. Hope this is informative. David Best DBestWorkshop@... https://www.flickr.com/photos/davidpbest/collections/ https://www.youtube.com/@David_Best

Hammer zero clearance insert
Hi,
?
Just a heads-up that I've updated my model for the zero clearance insert for the various Hammer sliding table saws https://www.printables.com/model/492157-hammer-c3-zero-clearance-insert. Along with other improvements, the fusion model is now also capable of generating the model for different tilt angles of the blade. To achieve this functionality in the model I made the below measurements of the lateral movement of the saw blade for different angles.

Kind regards

Re: OT: What totally unexpected things you have found in the shop
开云体育Machining used material ?is probably number one. Or? Normally, that shit happens when you screw together fixtures the Screw go through the face ?of the fixture that’s probably the most common one that ends up with scratches the table in the second one is people ramming stuff through the saw blade and the saw blade starts to wobble and cut s into the side of the sliding table. High-speed steel blades are notorious for that never use those on the slider.martin/campshure/co/llc Designing and building for 50 years On Nov 1, 2024, at 10:59?AM, PK via groups.io <pk@...> wrote:

Re: OT: What totally unexpected things you have found in the shop
I had asked him to make a new top for the docking saw. He laminated two pieces of material together. Threw a few staples in then screwed it together. The staples were a bit too long, and when he went to trim it to size, that's when the damage happened. What upset me was that he didn't even notice that it wasn't sliding nicely on the machine and he managed to do so much damage.?
Ah the joys of having employees! ;)
Regards,
Bryce
