Re: news slider table recommendations
Even if you decide on new, take a look at panel saws- sliding on the machinery exchange on Woodweb.? That will give you an idea of price ranges for commercial sliders.? Add 1500 for an RPC and 1500 to handle the Oh Crap repair stuff and you have an idea of
what a heavy build, 16" three speed saw with scoring will run worse case scenario.? Might not be where you want to go but when you get into the 10' table size, build matters.? I would set the 700 series as my bottom end build for larger saws.? Keep in mind
that an F90 doesn't tilt to discount those.? Dave

Hi CJ?
I'll give my two cents, as someone who has been building furniture for a living?for 20 years. First of all, I'd never spend $10K on a new saw. There are so many used sliders on the market since cabinet shops no longer really want them around. You can pick
up Altendorf and SCMI sliders for significantly less money than that. I bought my Panhans, 10'+ stroke for $2500 including probably $1000 worth of blades. The thing is basically bomb proof. Just made my first repair on it in a dozen years, a $30 switch for
the scoring motor. You have to be careful what you buy, you don't want something that was abused by a bunch of employees. If you are sold on Felder, they come up used often as well. If you're going to spend close to 10K, you can probably get a late model K700,
or KF on the used market. One good thing is they usually come out of hobby shops or small pro shops with an employee or two. We have 2 KF700's in our coop shop, both with the 80" stroke. I'd never have a slider that short as my only saw, unless you only build
furniture out of solid wood and rarely handle sheet goods.
Plan on bringing in 3 phase if it's an option, or going the phase converter route. I personally would not buy a Felder with a built in VFD. Both of our machines have had issues. They are 2001 vintage. Part acquisition was a nightmare too. I'm talking a
month plus of down time. Having the ability to run any 3 phase machine opens lots of possibilities. Single phase machines always fetch too much money on the used market since the market is so much bigger.
I have not personally used or seen a K500, or the other saw you mentioned so I cannot speak to them. Don't be afraid to look at used. Sliders are simple machines (or can be). My Panhans was built mid 80's and performs like a champ every single day. I was
straight line ripping 11' long 8/4 white oak on it over the weekend. I just had to remove one clamp to get the full length. A thing of beauty.

For the small window, I like 2 1/2" louver. For the large window, 3 1/2" louver is better.
The louver I like is not flat, it is kind of the oval shape. 3 1/2" knife?needs a 4" height cutter.
James trying to figure out why you need a 4" shaper head when the pieces can just be run through your JP.
Michael,
Are you referring to this shutter cutter ??? I looked at it before, but did not see the louver like Rocker's I am looking for based on the picture. Maybe it needs the custom knife.?
The cutter head I am looking at is Byrd's 2 knives cutter head?
I found this website?, you can pay $10 to get a DXF knife design and have the knife custom made at or other company of your choice.
James
James I have not but plan to do the same as well. ? I will watch this thread with a great interest.
I did look into the cutter that rangate has and liked the look of those shutters but was unable to find the hardware from any US supplier when i was looking this spring. ? I did not reach out to the folks in Italy at the time given they were in lock down - I am not sure how easy it is to get hardware from there but the assembly effort looked like it should be quite a bit less and i have quite a few between my home and my sisters to do -
I plan to make the plantation shutter for all the windows in the house. I have Rockler's shutter jig.
I know it is easy to?make the louver using a planer molder, but I have no space for more machines in the double car garage. Has anyone used the cutter head with corrugated knives on the shaper with power feeder to make the louver? Is it doable?
Thanks,
James

Chris,
I am asking about making the louver using the shaper. The frame is easy to make.?
The bed you used for the second pass on the ShopFox W1812 makes perfect sense. For the shaper, how can the bed be mounted on the infeed side?
James
Are we taking cutters for making the louver blades or the shutter frames?
I just finished cutting my second batch of Plantation Shutters for 10 more windows in my house. I did 11 windows last year.
I petty much used the Rockler design, making 3.5¡± adjustable shutters. Rockler calls for 3/8¡± thick louvers in ther ?plans. As my louver blades are quite long, I made them 1/2¡± thick.?
Most of the shutter hardware also came from Rockler.
I have a Shaper, but the only time I used it was for cutting tenons on the rails.
I have a ShopFox W1812 Moulder which I used, with custom blades, to make 600 louvers, most around 31¡± long. Even with the W1812, it¡¯s a two pass process to cut the elliptical shape of the Louver. I use two Maple beds, the first is used when the louver is still a 3.5¡± x 9/16¡± rectangular profile. The first bed just gives the wings of the cutter a little more clearance over the metal bed.? The second bed is used as the support bed when one side is already shaped. This second bed is made with a set of blades that compliment the shape of the louver profile. You only really use these blades once to make this bed.
Even if you get the profile blades to fit a shaper, I can see how the first pass could be done using a power feeder. The second pass would require a jig. similar to my second bed, that would keep the work piece perfectly vertical. I think it could be done, but would be tricky given the proximity of the feeder wheels. You would probably need to make a bed similar to the one used in my second pass and clap it to the Shaper fence on the infeed and outfeed sides.
I did initially try and use the Rockler Louver router bit. This needs 4 passes as you cut 1/4 of the elliptical profile on each pass. I made about two louvers, but was not satisfied with the result.
That is when I decided to buy the ShoFox W1812. Because of the length of my louvres, cost estimating buying pre-cut louvers from Rockler, if would have cost me around $5000 and I would have had about 60% waste on each louver.
Here¡¯s a bit of video of my first set

They sell basswood louver material already made to shape. I¡¯ve seen it at the local hardwood suppliers (cheap) and there is also a molding place here in town if you wanted to order a specific species of wood.

Re: news slider table recommendations
Maybe I can summarize, quite a few threads regarding the nuances of machines.
Get separates if possible. Larger productions might appreciate some overlap to anticipate down time in theory. But comes with big budgets too.
Get biggest slider you can. When you have it you will use it. If you want to clamp 8¡¯ for a rip you need minimum 9¡¯ slider. Wish I could fit a 10¡¯. Sure is nice to throw a whole sheet of ply up and trim it perfectly square. I do
this pretty much as bread and butter. You might get by with a shorter slider but I don¡¯t see why to get one at all. You¡¯ve got a nice tablesaw and there are short stroke sliders for that. I think Excalibur was the name off hand. Saw stop has their own version.
I started at hammer, moved to 500, then the 700 through the sales process. Ended up with the cf741sp with 9¡¯ slider. Didn¡¯t have room for separates.

I know it is easy to?make the louver using a planer molder, but I have no space for more machines in the double car garage. Has anyone used the cutter head with corrugated knives on the shaper with power feeder to make the louver? Is it doable?
Thanks,
James

Re: news slider table recommendations
Hi CJ? I'll give my two cents, as someone who has been building furniture for a living?for 20 years. First of all, I'd never spend $10K on a new saw. There are so many used sliders on the market since cabinet shops no longer really want them around. You can pick up Altendorf and SCMI sliders for significantly less money than that. I bought my Panhans, 10'+ stroke for $2500 including probably $1000 worth of blades. The thing is basically bomb proof. Just made my first repair on it in a dozen years, a $30 switch for the scoring motor. You have to be careful what you buy, you don't want something that was abused by a bunch of employees. If you are sold on Felder, they come up used often as well. If you're going to spend close to 10K, you can probably get a late model K700, or KF on the used market. One good thing is they usually come out of hobby shops or small pro shops with an employee or two. We have 2 KF700's in our coop shop, both with the 80" stroke. I'd never have a slider that short as my only saw, unless you only build furniture out of solid wood and rarely handle sheet goods.
Plan on bringing in 3 phase if it's an option, or going the phase converter route. I personally would not buy a Felder with a built in VFD. Both of our machines have had issues. They are 2001 vintage. Part acquisition was a nightmare too. I'm talking a month plus of down time.
I was straight line ripping 11' long 8/4 white oak on it over the weekend. I just had to remove one clamp to get the full length. A thing of beauty.

Re: news slider table recommendations
Just a few comments, others will have better advice and potentially passionate responses ? Couple things, with the 98¡± the end of your 8¡¯ panel/board cut will be next to the blade, it will not 100% clear the blade, and i think thats if you don¡¯t put a clamp of some sort on either end, might have room for one can¡¯t remember. But can be done and has been done.
Do you cut solid as well? Do you see your self ripping 8¡¯ timber? The above comment applies, jus saying it¡¯s not just the occasional 4x8 to consider.
You can infact cut longer than the sliders spec, you can make a sled that fits in the groove or use parallel guides which attach to the ¡°p¡± channel of the xroll, Felders guides are $500 each and Brian lambs are about the same I think, you need 2 (you really want one at some point regardless as the help with ripping long narrow pieces). You can also make them.?
I don¡¯t rip/cut 8¡¯ that often either, maybe 3-5 sheets a year but I don¡¯t think I would ever want to have less than the 110¡± slide, also just so you know the 110¡± should only go on the ¡°S¡± due to possible tipping on the ¡°P¡±.?
The cost for extra length in slider is about $500 so the 110¡± is $500 more than the 98¡± And jumping to the ¡°S¡± frame isn¡¯t necessarily more than the ¡°P¡±, it wasn¡¯t when I quoted a 700, in fact it was less because they sell more of them, pricing depends partly on what is on the current production cycle and the mix of options.?
My advice is to get quotes with the options you want (da) + some options you would like but think are out of reach then work backwards removing whats not important, also be sure to consider options you can¡¯t add at a later date to the saw. And be sure to get a quote for a 700, Looking at your numbers I know thats probably not where you are headed but I can tell you when I was buying my J/P I hd signed the paperwork for an ad741 and at the last minute asked for a quote for an ad941, glad i did it was only 1k more which didn¡¯t break the bank...

Re: news slider table recommendations
I inherited tons of 3/4 shaper knives and when I bought my KF 700P I bought the router spindle, and the 3/4 spindle but once I used the larger shaper knives on the 30 mm I never break out the 3/4. I do use the router spindle a lot and love that I can use bits with bearings without the shaper hood. The larger shaper knives are so smooth especially with the limiters that I feel safer using them. Go nicer than you want at the time and you will never look back with regret. They have long since paid for themselves in both money and satisfaction.

?
I am 29 years old and simply a hobbyist who would like to upgrade to nice slider that I could have for a very long time (currently running a PM2200). I live below Washington DC and about 2 hours from felder in Delaware so I was able to look at some of the machines they have to offer. I originally was thinking about getting a K3 but then I got to play with the x-roll table and lets just say i wish I didn¡¯t because now i feel like I want to step it up to the felder line. I just got done building a 30x40 garage which I use as my workshop so I don¡¯t have a space issue.
?
My first thought was ¡°I want a slider that could straight line rip a 8¡¯ sheet¡± which led me to a k500 with a bigger slider or the k500s but after being on the phone with my sales rep for an hour he basically made the recommendation towards the 500 professional since his justification was ¡°if your not ripping 8¡¯ sheets all the time I wouldn¡¯t worry about it¡± he said their was a trimming shoe that I could buy to rip 8¡¯ sheets on the occasion. Im not quite sure though how that works so im confused there. He quoted me that the package deal on the larger k3w was $5,900, the 500p was about $7000, and the 500s was about $9200.
?
So my thought was if im gonna take the plunge and spend $5900 on a new saw then I could stomach another $1100 for the xroll but honestly the 500s seems out of reach for me.
?
I also considered the KF500 and B3 comfort as options but im not sure If I want a stand alone shaper or deal with the conversion. The biggest turn off is flipping up a power feeder when I want it. Another issue I have with the felder shaper is the spindle size I have a huge collection of freeborn cutters I picked up on CL from someone for basically free but they are ?¡±. I did think about the option to mill a spare spindle down to ?¡±. Im currently looking at the laguna 5 hp shaper.
?
All feedback and recommendations are welcome.
