Re: KF 700 SP options

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

SW,

If you are going to make windows with your KF700 and you are want to cut large tenons with cutters larger than 220mm you will run into some problems.

To run 300mm cutters on my F700z shaper I had to run them above the table and then run the parts to be tenoned on a spacer. ?Since the sleeves of my large window cutters are 100mm tall I only had about 10 mm of adjustment left in the system. ?One of the reasons I upgraded to a Profile 45z is that I can submerge the big 300mm cutters into the table as the opening in the table is larger than the 700 series shaper. ?I can also run up to 240mm cutters in the shaper hood. ?The F700z was limited to 220mm and the Aigner fence plates only opened to 190mm meaning I could not cut a tenon the full depth available from the Felder 220 mm rebate disks.?

You can avoid the large tenon cutters by using dowel construction but to do dowel construction efficiently you will need a machine like a Stegherr FD Junior.

There are window cutter sets for other types of windows (non-tilt and turn) that don¡¯t require large tenon disks, which set from rangate are you looking at?

Greg at Rangate is a very knowledgable guy and I highly recommend Rangate when it comes to shaper tooling. ?

You won¡¯t be sorry if you buy tooling from Greg. ?Great tooling makes things very easy. ?I don¡¯t even have to sand profiles with Rangate/Zuani/Garniga tooling.?

Re: KF 700 SP options

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

This is confusing to me. ? How do you get the Comatic feeder to automatically start running when power is applied to it? ? If I start my Comatic feeder, unplug it, then plug it back in, it powers back up on the OFF mode and I have to press the start switch on the feeder again to get it running - which is the way it should be for safety purposes. ? So I seriously doubt John¡¯s feeder starts running by itself when the shaper spindle switch is depressed.

Having the power to the PF unavailable if the shaper motor is not running would drive me nuts - setting up the feeder to track accurately is trial and error and I usually test the feeder tracking setup without the spindle turning until I¡¯m certain it¡¯s aligned properly. ??

I never hooked my feeder to the shaper plug because I did not want to the feeder to start and stop this way.

I run the Comatic DC40 smart feeder with single phase 120 volt. ?Since the DC40 converts AC power to DC it is possible to move some jumpers and run the feeder with single phase or three phase and with 120 volt or 240 volt.

I like to control the power feeder independently of the spindle power on or off. ?I would like to have it set up so the power feeder stops when the red power off button is pressed so that is something is going wrong the feeder stops with the spindle. ?But that is not possible when using 120 volt as the KF700 supplies whatever power it is running on.
If you are running the power feeder from the plug on the KF700 then it will power on and off with the start stop buttons for the shaper or the saw. ?I don¡¯t like the power feeder running when I am hand feeding something. ?I suppose I could turn the feeder off with the feeder controls.

Mine is plugged into the Profil 45, and it does turn on and off with the shaper. I suspect that the Felder tech disabled it on your machine for some reason. Joe is right that there is a timer. So, I reached out for Liz Rogers for a quote of a KF 700 SP with the following options:

Option 264S - 7.5 HP (5.5 kW) motor
Option 25 - Electrical display setting, inch
Option 139 - Remote "ON"-switch on sliding table for main blade and scoring unit
Option 14 - 3-phase CEE coupling for additional equipment with time-delayed connection (essential for the use of a power feeder)

Option 201 - Electrical height and angle adjustment of the saw unit with LED display (#119),?K2 "Power-Drive"

Option 119 - Electrical height and angle adjustment of the spindle moulder with LED display?(#201)

Option 82 - Preparation for Dado tooling up to 19.5mm in width
Option 75 - Electronic scoring unit, 3 7/8" (100mm) with main saw blade 11 3/4" (300mm)
Option 77 - rip capacity 1250 mm
Option 84 - Micro adjustable rip fence
Option 86 - Digital display for rip fence with fine adjustment (#77)
Option 176 - Inch scale for rip capacity 49"
Option 105 - Moulder spindle diameter 1 1/4", usable height 115mm
Option 135 - Dimension sliding table XL, cutting length 3200mm (126"), anodised** with edging?shoe

Option 161 - 1500 mm Outrigger table for 2500-3700 sliding tables
Option 195 - Inch scale f! or crosscut fence 3200
Option 172 - Outrigger digital cut stop 3200 mm (126"), 2 digital fence stops, for outrigger?table 1500

Item 430-017 - Tilting device "F" with gas spring
Transport and mounting unit for outrigger table
Overhead saw guard

Questions I have for the group:
1.? Should I upgrade to the 10 HP motor?? I have? no idea the cost to upgrade to this motor from 7.5 HP; waiting for Liz to tell me.? If the answer is "Yes," then will the Phase Perfect (PP) PT-330 able to power this motor + the motor for the scoring unit + the power feeder (?Co-Matic maybe)?? I read that PP under rate their phase converter.? I also remember Co-Matic feeder can be run 1 phase???

2.? Any recommendation on what else to add/subtract from the options list?? The group seems to lean toward the "cry once" philosophy base on my reading of old posts.??

3.? Do the imperial scale also has metric scale on it?? My Hammer K3 scales has both.

4.? Is it relatively easy to add a digital stop in the future?? If it is, then I will just order the standard option and buy the 604-118 digital stop in the future and add it to the right-end of the cross cut fence.??

5.? Any one has pictures of the overhead saw guard of a KF 700 SP?? Is it bolted to the floor like the Kappa saw's?? I can't find any picture of the current model year searching online; just the usual advertising pictures.??

There are a lot of box making in my future!? :)

Thank you all!

SW

Lucky,

I wish my wife had said something nearly like that! Liz should have more time to help you as soon as she gets my machine out the door! My apologizes if her phone has been busy. :)

Now we just have to figure which freight company to use.... Could be an issue when you don't live near a major population center.

Now to buy the phase converter and new blades!

Good luck with your machine.

It looks like the Integral fence and the Bowmould are home runs. I would be interested in the Centrex as well as a back fence. I don't know if there is a way to use the back fence with the sliding table being at the edge versus the Aigner rails it shows in the catalog it attaches to? Does anyone know what needs ordering on the Centrex to get it to work with the CF741 ie riser blocks, support plates etc?

Many thanks in advance,
Michael Tagge

Re: KF 700 SP options

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

First, I¡¯d like to congratulate Lucky for being on the historical ¡°right-side¡± of the ongoing debate about 30mm versus 1.25¡± shaper spindle. ? Lucky, I¡¯m proud of ya. ?:-)

Second, if you do elect to get the narrower rip capacity (31¡± instead of 49¡±) as Lucky mentioned, you still want the overhead dust extractor hood support system rigged to give you 49¡± clearance to the left of the blade so that you can crosscut to the center of 4x8 panels. ? On the Kappa machines, you have to specify the overhead guard position specifically, otherwise it will come configured to the width of the rip fence ordered. ? At one time, Felder¡¯s overhead guard bracket on the 700-series machines had two mounting positions and it was easy to configure the overhead guard to your desired position (31 or 49 clearance) in the field. ? Be sure to ask and specify you want to be able to position the overhead guard to the 49¡± position if you get the 31¡± rip capacity, or you may end up boxed in - and get it in writing.

With respect to the Comatic smart stand, I absolutely love the thing (put it on my Profile 45 shaper and my Dual 51 J/P). ? But I have cautioned others about whether it fits and works well on a tilt-away bracket on the KF700 machines. ? I can¡¯t say it doesn¡¯t or won¡¯t, but it¡¯s definitely a larger and heavier contraption that the stand Felder sells for their feeders. ? Agree with the other comments that a 3-wheeled feeder is more appropriate on the 700 than a 4-wheeler due to the weight considerations tilting it off the machine surface. ? Edward Mazuronis here has decided to go with the 7-wheel Comatic (smaller diameter wheels) and Smart Stand on his KF700, but as he¡¯s mentioned, he¡¯s going to build a roll-away support stand for it that secures to the rear F-rail of the machine when docked.

Bottom line: do you really need the extra capacity or could you use the floor space for something else?

- I note your order for the 1-1/4¡± spindle. Do you already have a bunch of shaper tooling? If not, perhaps consider the 30mm spindle instead. Again, this has been discussed many times. The advantages of the 30mm spindle is that you have a wider selection of tooling available to you, and if there are good deals on 1-1/4¡± cutters, you can always run these with ¡°top-hat¡± style bushings. I took this advice when purchasing my Profil 45, and the top-hat solution works very well in all but specialised/complicated cutter set-ups. Bottom line: get the 30mm spindle.

- In passing, let me comment on your 3200mm slider length. WELL DONE! I have that length and I love it. (I would have loved the 3700mm table even more¡ but would be hard-pressed to fit it.)

- Regarding your question about motor size, on my Kappa I upgraded to 7.35kW for the motor, and I LOVE the power. Whether I would have been happy with the lesser motor, I can¡¯t say. The motor upgrade prices are small compared to some of the other options you¡¯re considering.

- Regarding the comatic smart stand and feeder, while I agree with Joe¡¯s comment about weight, don¡¯t forget that the smart stand can be purchased with the 3 wheel feeder, which would bring the weight down significantly. DS400 (4 wheeler); DS300 (3 wheeler).

- I¡¯m not sure about your other questions. I see David Best has just replied to you. I haven¡¯t read it all yet but hopefully he picks up on your other points.. Good luck.

Option 195 - Inch scale for crosscut fence 3200

Re: KF 700 SP options

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Just to clarify, I¡¯m glad I got the digital telescoping extension for the crosscut fence, and I have been glad to have the accuracy of it occasionally. ? ?So I¡¯m not saying ¡°do not buy this option¡± - just that it¡¯s worth thinking about since it costs money, adds a few inches and 11 pounds to the weight of the crosscut fence overall, and if you only build kitchen cabinets or jewelry boxes, you¡¯ll hardly ever use it. ? So think about your intended use and let that guide your decision.

1. How often do you work with longer stock, beyond 74¡±. If never, then listen to David¡¯s concerns.

2. Do you have space constraints which will force you to remove and store the outrigger and crosscut fence on regular occasions? David is right about the weight of the outrigger and digital stops. 3 - Unlikely - but you can easily replace the Felder-supplied scales with Starrett aftermarket sticky-back scales that have both metric and imperial. ? Felder seems to have a bias that one either works in metric or imperial, but not both, which of course is total BS.

I haven¡¯t read it all yet but hopefully he picks up on your other points. Good luck.

Warm regards,
Lucky

Option 195 - Inch scale for crosscut fence 3200

Re: KF 700 SP options

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

As to your questions:

1 - I have a 5.5KW motor on my Kappa 400, and find it more than adequate, sometimes cutting up 16/4 oak or SA Rosewood. ? Not once have I wished for a larger motor on this machine and I really push things to the limit (just ask Joe). ? I have the Phase Perfect 330 and can easily start and run the saw and my RL160 dust extractor with zero problems. ? I have a 10KW motor on my Dual 51, and it too runs just fine in conjunction with the RL160 even taking 3-4mm off rough oak 12¡± wide with a Terse head. ? So my conclusion is that Phase Perfect significantly underrates their equipment. ? In contrast, I had a 20HP Kay Industries rotary converter at one time, and it would start and run the same equipment, but the manufactured leg would spike to 800 volts and fry contractors in machines trying to start up.

2 - If you¡¯re going with digital crosscut fence, I have a couple suggestions. ? First is to think hard about whether you need a digital readout on the telescoping fence. ? The telescoping fence stop only becomes active when you¡¯re trying to position a stop beyond 74-inches. ? I have it on my machine, but rarely have I felt I needed the additional accuracy provided by a digital stop when cutting stock longer than 74-inches. ? That digital telescoping stop has significant weight, and contributes to the overall weight of the crosscut fence system when you¡¯re trying to remove the fence prior to putting the outrigger table on the mobility cart. ? My crosscut fence with digital stops and digital telescoping extension weighs 54 pounds and I find it challenging at times to lift the fence off and store it prior to putting the outrigger table on the mobility cart. ? Of that 54 pounds, 11 are for the digital telescoping extension. ?I recommend NOT putting the outrigger table with digital crosscut fence attached to it on the mobility cart because the entire rig ends up very tall and extremely top heavy. ? This link is to photos that will illustrate what I mean - it can be done, but I don¡¯t consider it very safe, especially if your shop floor has irregularities (click on the individual photos for detailed explanations): ?
?

Also, and you may know this already, but if you order the normal digital crosscut fence, it comes with one movable stop, and the flipper on that stop is on the left side, meaning it will position no closer to the blade than about 8-inches. ? Felder has a second stop with the flipper on the right side that will facilitate positioning down to about 3-inches from the blade. ? The Felder option number for this stop is?604-118. ? And if you get the digital telescoping extension option along with the right-side-flipper stop just mentioned, you¡¯ll also need the left flipper stop too otherwise there is a dead zone from 69-74-inches where you can not position a stop. ? All this is described in detail here along with photos that illustrate the difference in size and configuration of the digital crosscut fence options in comparison to the analog (non-digital) versions (click on the individual photos for detailed explanations): ?

3 - Unlikely - but you can easily replace the Felder-supplied scales with Starrett aftermarket sticky-back scales that have both metric and imperial. ? Felder seems to have a bias that one either works in metric or imperial, but not both, which of course is total BS.

4 - If you already have a digital crosscut fence, adding another stop to it is pretty simple. ? Adding a digital telescoping extension if probably not possible since it requires the installation of the magnetic scale strip inside the fence extrusion. ??

5 - Unless Felder has changed things since 2015 when I explored upgrading my K975, the larger 700¡¯s and K940 saw units had the overhead saw guard support bracket mounted to the back of the machine chassis as shown here: ?
? ?

Ask Liz to supply you with a detailed drawing of the machine in pdf like the one here - that will answer the question for sure: ??
?

Hope this helps. ? You¡¯re going to LOVE this new machine.

Re: Aigner shaper accessories on Felder Combos

GLEN

Hi David,
Opps I need to quit multitasking I guess...
It was the Aigner Integal fence and it was for the Profil45zx
whats on my order is 432-80016 Shaper fence "integral-a" 500 mm for spindle moulder fence 250

That might be it but I changed my order so many times I am confused.
I might be just second guessing myself.

Thanks for all of your input.
Glen

Glen, which Aigner fence are you talking about? ? If you mean the Integral Fence, that¡¯s for a shaper not a saw and has no applicability to your Kappa. ? Please clarify.

If I might throw a question,

As I want it, does the saw need to be modified for it or is it adaptable to the existing configuration the saw was built to. Some how I remember that the saw had to be machined specifically for the Aigner fence.
But then again I cant remember what I did yesterday.

Anyone know if you can get the fences that are drilled out for our machines from this vendor?

If so anyone purchase them and have a idea what the final cost was after shipping so forth and so on.

The fences have been high on my list for quite some time and I just keep putting them off. Don¡¯t know why considering how much of my income I continually spend on tools were to week n]month to month year to year...

at much lower prices than in USA.. They normally run an 8% discount which helps offset the shipping charges.

It would be a PITA if there was an issue with the item but no one here has voiced any issues with there orders.

Re: KF 700 SP options

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Hi SW,

If you are considering the Comatic Smart Stand for your Comatic feeder I think it is too large to use on a KF700. ?A three wheeled feeder with standard stand and lift assist device is ideal for a KF700.

I think 7.5 HP is enough power. ?I have not found 7.5 HP to be a limitation on my Profile 45z shaper. ?
