How to achieve this surface finish?
Hi all.
I¡¯ve been trying for months to decide on a surface finish for the paneling of a spa room. I was at the Portland (OR) Japanese Garden last week and saw an interesting treatment on an exterior door that I think would work beautifully. However, I¡¯m not clear on how they achieved the look and would love y¡¯all¡¯s advice. (Photos of the door are included below.) It kind of looks like they used a scrub plane across the grain, but the varying widths of the cuts has me in some doubt.?
Any thoughts would be much appreciated.?

I understand you have a Nederman S750 and are very happy with it. I just looked it up online and the machines on offer look very interesting. A couple of questions:
?
- Do you have the shaker cleaning option? Whether you do or not, I wonder how the Nederman goes with wide belt dust?
- I see that the shaker cleaning option can only be operated (manual, mechanical or automatic) while the machine is stopped. I like to run my machines
for hours at a time, and the RL250 cleaning cycle might kick in every 15 to 20 mins depending on what I¡¯m doing during that time. Is it normal to have to power everything down in order to ¡°clean/shake¡± a dust extractor? Is this an advantage of the RL units,
or in fact one of its downfalls?
- The Nederman runs the extracted material through the impeller, while the RL¡¯s impeller is after the filters. I don¡¯t know which is preferable in terms
of extraction capability although I love not having to worry about chunks of timber or foreign material damaging my impeller.
- I see there are bag, barrel and bin options for the Nederman. Which do you have and which do you recommend?

Regarding air compressors¡ Another point I failed to mention for the benefit of others considering hydrovane or screw compressors: I live in sub-tropical Brisbane in Australia. It is not quite as humid as
Hawaii, but relative humidity is generally high. That must play a role in how much water gets into the oil of these compressors and needs to be ¡°burned off¡± with continuous or near-continuous run times. I wonder whether a hydrovane or screw compressor would
last a lot longer with intermittent use if located in an area of low relative humidity?

I had Hydrovane before, and my current compressor is a 7.5kw silent piston compressor by Chicago pneumatics, I think I had it more than 5 years now. minimum maintenance needed.?
I didnt touch screw compressor cos I know I dont have the continuous needs of air - for screw compressor they NEED to be run continuously..?
going back to the dust extraction, my current extractor is a Nederman S750. very happy with it.?

James, was thinking of something similar to the image's you posted. Putting the magnetic reader on the back of the fence will have issues with the kip lever on the back of the cross cut, so thinking of mounting the magnetic reader on the top of fence....we will see.
No 3D printers here, so mdf or plywood. Kindest regards

Retrofitting a DRO to the cross-cut fence is an interesting idea.?
I had no experience with DRO when I ordered my saw, so did not include that as an option. Since then I put a Wixey DRO on my thicknesser (about $100, now) and was pleasantly surprised at how accurate and useful it was.
A Wixey setup that might work for either the fence or the crosscut fence is about $150, including brackets. Probably would require some adapting to the fence.
I will continue to watch this thread for ideas.
