One-Way Love
One-Way Love I thought she was the cutest little thing in junior high. She didn't think I was the cutest little thing in junior high, though. See, I decided to make an all-or-nothing play for her. I went downtown and I spent all my allowance money on this necklace for her; the finest rhinestones you have ever seen. Then I wrote this eloquently mushy note to go with it and I sealed them both in an envelope which I proceeded to hand her one day as she passed by my desk in study hall. The next day, she passed by my desk again, and I looked down and there was a familiar looking envelope with the note and the necklace in it. Ouch! I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I want to have A Word With You today about "One-Way Love." I'll tell you, it hurts to spend a lot on someone you care about and basically have them not care. It's a feeling Jesus Christ knows all too well. In fact, without even knowing it, you may have been responding to His love that way. That love, and the response Jesus should get from us, is clearly described in 1 John 4:10, and then verse 19, our word for today from the Word of God. Here's what it says, "This is love: not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins." And what a sacrifice-the sinless Son of God taking the filth of your sin and mine so we could be forgiven. God's one and only Son, the Prince of Heaven, abandoned by Father God because He was carrying your sin and mine. The One angels worship, with nails driven angrily through His hands and feet, a spear thrust into His side, absorbing your hell so you would never have to go there. Amazing love-unspeakable love-love which demands a verdict from you and me. Will you give yourself to the man who gave His life for you? Or will you, however politely or religiously, withhold your life from Him? 1 John 4:19 explains the only response worthy of the sacrifice. "We love Him because He first loved us." As actor-director Mel Gibson immersed himself in the suffering and crucifixion of Jesus in preparation for his movie, "The Passion of the Christ," here's how he described its impact. "The full horror of what Jesus suffered didn't really strike me. But when you finally see it and understand what He went through, it makes you feel not only compassion, but also a debt. You want to repay Him for the enormity of His sacrifice. You want to love Him in return." It's possible to appreciate Jesus' death on the cross, to respect Him for doing it, even to be grateful for it and still miss the only response that really matters to Him-the only response that makes what He did for you on the cross really yours. The incredible Bible verse that says, "God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son" says He did that so that, "whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life." (John 3:16) "Believe" means you grab Jesus like He's your only hope. You're abandoning every other hope you might have clung to for getting to God. You say to Jesus, "I cannot resist this love, not any longer. Your death for me is my only hope of being forgiven and going to heaven. So Jesus, I'm giving you what you paid for. You paid for my life and my future and my eternity. I'm Yours." If you want that, I want to help you be sure you've got it and that's why our website is there. Order out of Chaos
Order out of Chaos God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Psalm 46:1 Before God began to form the earth, it was formless, empty, and dark. Even in that state, “the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters” (Genesis 1:2). On day three of Creation, God pulled back the waters and dry land appeared. Chaos turned into order on earth. In Psalm 46, the psalmist seems to call upon that Creation imagery. Instead of the land and mountains appearing out of the sea, he sees the earth being “removed” and “the mountains [being] carried into the midst of the sea.” The sea roared and was troubled (verses 2-3). Instead of God bringing order out of chaos, as He did at Creation, it seems that the psalmist’s life (and Israel’s) is devolving into chaos. But he knows one thing is true: Just as the Spirit of God was hovering over the earth, so God is “a very present help in [his time of] trouble.... The Lord of hosts is with us” (Psalm 46:1, 7). When you sense that chaos is replacing order in your life, remember that God is your always-present help. Call on Him to calm the chaos and restore the order. If you don’t surrender to Christ, you surrender to chaos. E. IT IS WELL WITH MY SOUL! Psalm 107:29-30 “The LORD calms the storm, so that the waves are still. They are glad because they are quiet. He guides them to their desired haven.” It seems that each of us is called upon to face storms in our life. It may be physical infirmity, financial reversals or the loss of a loved one. It is not the storm that matters, but how we react to the storm. Back in 1873, Horatio Spafford and his family were scheduled to sail from New York to England where he was to assist the great evangelist, D.L. Moody. Because of a last minute business crisis Mr. Spafford sent his family on ahead and he would follow on a later ship. Unfortunately the ship his family was sailing on collided with another ship and sank. There was a terrible loss of life, including the Spafford’s four daughters. It was nine days after the tragedy that Horatio Spafford received a cable from his wife that simply said, “Saved alone.” What poignant words. Later, as he was sailing to meet his wife in England Horatio Spafford asked the captain of his ship to let him know when they were near where the accident had occurred. It was there that he penned the words of this beautiful hymn; It Is Well with My Soul. . . . . . . . . . . . It Is Well With My Soul When peace, like a river, attendeth my way, When sorrows like sea billows roll; Whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to say, It is well, it is well with my soul. A CLASSIC MESSAGE OF HOPE FROM DR. JACK VAN IMPE Final Mysteries Unsealed What we have referred to as the "fourth" vision of Daniel that began in chapter ten, now reaches its grand climax in chapter twelve with its prophecies about the Great Tribulation, the resurrection of Old Testament saints, the sealing of prophecy until the time of the end, and the abomination of desolation. Everything we have studied to this point has been prologue to the magnificent conclusion of Daniel's prophecy. We begin chapter twelve with references to Daniel's people-the Jews-and to the archangel Michael, the protector of the nation of Israel-an assignment that has already been a full-time job for him throughout the ages and, in some ways, has only just begun. DANIEL 12:1-3 And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book. And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt. And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever. While Michael has been the protective overseer of the Jews throughout their history, his work will become even more critical in the days ahead. The end-time reality for the Jews, according to prophecy, will deteriorate into something worse than anything anyone has ever witnessed in world history. Therefore, when you and I think we have it difficult at any given moment, we must remember that the pain and sorrow we may be suffering will pale into insignificance when compared with the trials and tribulations yet to come to so many. Jeremiah 30:7 says: "Alas! for that day is great, so that none is like it: it is even the time of Jacob's trouble; but he shall be saved out of it." Jesus confirmed Jeremiah's prophecy in Matthew 24:21 when He said, "For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be." However, Jesus says that Michael the protector will also be there on the scene, doing battle with Satan in the heavenlies (Revelation 12:7-8). In Daniel 12:1 we see Michael "standing for the people of Israel." Why will Michael be there? So that the Jews might be saved physically. That's Michael's job, and the Jews-at the time of the end-will never need his assistance more than during this time of "Jacob's trouble"-that period during the Tribulation hour when Russia marches down to the Middle East after the Antichrist has broken his peace contract with Israel-forty-two months after the contract has been in effect. Everything will be relatively smooth sailing up to that time, the epitome of economic and political sweetness and light, and then Bam! Everything is smashed to pieces at the midpoint of the Tribulation period (Daniel 9:27) as Russia goes up against "the land of unwalled villages ... to them that are at rest, that dwell safely, all of them dwelling without walls, and having neither bars nor gates" (Ezekiel 38:11). This is the beginning of the time of great persecution for the Jews as Satan is cast out of heaven, with his primary assignment to obliterate the Jewish people from the face of the earth (Revelation 12:13). For all these reasons, Michael will be there to stand up for his people, as revealed to Daniel in the first verse of chapter twelve. Those Who Sleep Will Awake If you are a Jewish person, I want you to know that your Old Testament teaches the promise of a resurrection, and that there will be life beyond the grave. Unfortunately, many Jews do not know that Daniel 12:2 is in the Bible. This end-time event is something one should look forward to if one has come to recognize that the expected Messiah is the Lord Jesus Christ and has received Him as a personal Savior. Malachi 4:6 And he will turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers, lest I come and strike the earth with a curse. Because of advances in modern medicine and technology, over 500,000 people over the age of 100 are alive today. As people live longer, it is not unusual for four generations to share the same space. This togetherness has emphasized the gap – the power struggle – that exists between generations. The young believe the elderly are in error; the more mature believe that young people have wandered far off course. For those in Christ’s family, though, He comes to turn the hearts of fathers to their children and the hearts of the children to their fathers. Since every person is created in the image of God – by Him and for Him – we respect others. If a person is alive and breathing, God has a purpose for him or her, and we honor His decision. We must abandon selfishness in favor of sacrifice. As we seek to honor God and fulfill the good works that He prepared for us to accomplish, we make room for one another. We honor the experience and the energy, the tradition and the transformation. We allow for differences as we press toward the same goal. In the middle of the messiness of generations sharing the same space – in the center of it all – our hearts reach for our Father. And He turns our hearts towards one another. Jesus Paid The Price
Jesus Paid The Price Mark 10:45 'For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.' Jesus told His disciples many times of His death but this is the first time He indicated the reason for His death. Now it is clear that His death would be a 'ransom', defined in the Greek as a means of loosing by paying a price. The words 'ransom' and 'redeem' were used interchangeably in scripture. Not only would Jesus pay the price for sin but also His death would be substitutionary. In 1 Timothy 2:6, the word 'ransom' is taken from the Greek word 'antilutron' which means 'a redemption-price.' The Greek word 'anti' means 'in place of.' In other words, the ransom avails for all who will accept it (Jn. 3:16; Rom. 10:13). The price paid for our redemption is the life of Jesus, that is, Jesus' blood (Col. 1:14). This redemption, according to Hebrews 9:12, is eternal and is intended to purify us from all iniquity (Ti. 2:14), and bring us to serve the living God (Heb. 9:14). This can be illustrated by the way we use trading stamps. First, the stamps have to be purchased, then they are redeemed for the desired product. The purchase is essential but so is the redemption. No one really wants the stamps. They want what the stamps can be redeemed for. The purchase for our total salvation has already been made with the blood of Jesus, but our bodies have not been redeemed yet. That is to say that we have not received yet, all the benefits of this transaction in our physical bodies. This will take place at the second coming of the Lord when we receive our new glorified bodies. Our spirits are the only part of us that have experienced total redemption. Coffee Break "One God For All Your Needs" "Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord:" Deuteronomy 6:4 There is only one true and living God. He is the Lord God, the Divine Trinity. Because He is Infinite, you can't put a limit on Him. When He reveals Himself, He reveals Himself through His many attributes and character. When He revealed Himself to Abraham on the mountain, He revealed Himself as not only God, but Jehovah Jireh; God who provides. He revealed Himself to Ezekiel as Jehovah-Shammah; God who is here. He is still revealing who He is to us today, and daily. Today He desires to reveal Himself to you. He is the God who provides and meets your need. ("But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus." Philippians 4:19) He is the God who heals. ("Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits: Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases." Psalm 103:2,3) He is God who delivers-- delivers from sin, from addiction, for temptations, from the pit of despair, from anger and bitterness, etc. ("But I am poor and needy; yet the Lord thinketh upon me: thou art my help and my deliverer; make no tarrying, O my God." Psalm 40:17) He is the God who saves us from all our sins and gives us eternal life. ("For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord." Luke 2:11) He is the God who gives us peace. ("For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace." Isaiah 9:6) What do you need today? Don't limit God. He is not like the false gods we have read about in literature, or in the Bible that the heathen worshipped, or that many are still worshipping today. They had/have one separate god for each thing-- a sun god, a moon god, a god for peace, a god for fertility, a god for strength, and so on. They had/have hundreds of gods. Well, the Lord God is not like that. He is One God- the Almighty. He is Omnipotent, Omniscient, Omnipresent. He is not limited. He is One God and He can do it all. With Him nothing is too hard, too difficult or impossible. You don't have to seek after many gods to provide whatever it is you need, no matter how many different needs you have- He can handle them all. Have a great day. There is only One True and Living God and He is able to do whatever you need... and He desires to. Proverbs 8:17
Proverbs 8:17 I love those who love me, and those who seek me diligently will find me. The tree in the Garden of Eden and the tree on which our Savior died at Calvary represent the power struggle that exists in every human heart. In Eden, Adam succumbed to temptation, and one man opened the door to all the misery that sin brings with it. But at Calvary, another Man – our sinless Savior – tore the veil to give us access to the grace and righteousness that flow out of restored fellowship with God the Father. Stop returning to the scene of the crime. Stop looking to a tree weighed down with fruit that leads to death and loss. Look instead to the tree where Christ became the Remedy for the terminal illness of sin. Eat of the fruit of this tree to find love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. To resist the temptation to waver between those two trees, pursue Him relentlessly. Focus your eyes exclusively on Him. Strip away anything that would weigh you down as you run for the prize of knowing Him. Place your hand in the nail-pierced hand that hung on that tree in your place. Never look back. Be consumed by His holy fire. When we seek Him with our whole hearts, we will find Him. Consider everything else a loss for the unsurpassed worth of knowing Him. Keep pressing on and reaching out for the One Who wondrously reached out for you. Blessing: May the Lord bless you and keep you. He Quiets the Storm He calms the storm, so that its waves are still. Then they are glad because they are quiet; so He guides them to their desired haven. Psalm 107:29-30 According to the U. S. Geological Survey, about 96.5 percent of the earth’s water is in the oceans. In biblical days, sailing on either saltwater bodies, like the Mediterranean Sea, or freshwater bodies, like the Sea of Galilee, presented potential dangers. Storms could be violent, and ships of the day were vulnerable. Recommended Reading: Matthew 8:23-27 It is no surprise that in Psalm 107, one of the four categories of troubles mentioned was violent storms at sea (verses 23-32). But the response of the psalmist is one we can copy for any kind of storm in which we find ourselves: “Then they cry out to the Lord in their trouble, and He brings them out of their distresses” (verse 28). When Jesus and His disciples were swept up in a storm on the Sea of Galilee, the disciples cried out, “Lord, save us! We are perishing!” (Matthew 8:25) And He did. Whatever kind of storm you are in, let your first action be to ask the Lord to quiet the storm—and to quiet you in the storm. God moves in a mysterious way His wonders to perform. He plants His footsteps in the sea, and rides upon the storm. "Off and Running" “I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us.” —Philippians 3:14 Are you satisfied with where you are in your spiritual growth? We need to remember that the good is often the enemy of the best. For example, some people give up after they’ve tried to lose weight and get in shape. They think, “I’m already overweight. I might as well be more overweight.” They stop exercising and trying to control their food intake. They say, “Just forget it. There’s nothing I can do.” We can have the same attitude toward spiritual growth. We might tell ourselves that we’re not as spiritual as we ought to be, but there are a lot of people who are even worse than we are. Even so, do we really want that as our standard of measure? Why not say, “I want to grow even more”? The apostle Paul summed it up perfectly when he wrote, “I don’t mean to say that I have already achieved these things or that I have already reached perfection. But I press on to possess that perfection for which Christ Jesus first possessed me” (Philippians 3:12 NLT). Or, as The Message puts it, “I’m not saying that I have this all together, that I have it made. But I am well on my way, reaching out for Christ, who has so wondrously reached out for me. . . . I’ve got my eye on the goal, where God is beckoning us onward—to Jesus. I’m off and running, and I’m not turning back” (verses 12–14). We want to make Jesus Christ our focus—not a person, not a pastor, and not a church. The Bible tells us, “For no one can lay any foundation other than the one we already have—Jesus Christ” (1 Corinthians 3:11 NLT). Jesus is the only foundation that will sustain us as Christians. So let’s build our lives on Jesus Christ. SPIRITUAL FRUIT!
SPIRITUAL FRUIT! Galatians 5:22-23 “The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control, against such there is no law." In the northern hemisphere it is that special time of year when the fruit ripens on the trees, sweet, delicious, and ready to eat. It makes my mouth water just thinking of a perfectly ripe and juicy peach! However, in just a few short weeks the weather will turn bitterly cold and throughout the months of winter, the trees that now produce such tasty fruit will stand stark, bare, and naked of its delicious produce. In contrast, God promises us the fruit of the Spirit that never passes away! The fruit that we read about in today’s Scripture is a fruit that meets the deepest needs of the human soul. It is fruit that produces life. Years ago I was teaching a Sociology class at Boise State University, with about 120 bored and indifferent students staring at me. I gave them their first assignment. They were to write the three things they desired most in their life and why. There were a few ridiculous answers, but a wide majority listed the first three fruits of the Spirit: LOVE, JOY, PEACE. The fruit that God promises will always produce comfort and healing to ourselves as well as others. Seek after God’s eternally fresh fruit! Share In His Sufferings Matthew 20:22 'But Jesus answered and said, Ye know not what ye ask. Are ye able to drink of the cup that I shall drink of, and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? They say unto him, We are able.' MATTHEW 20:17-25 The Greek word for baptize is 'baptizo.' This word was used by Plato (fourth century B.C.) to describe a man being 'overwhelmed' by philosophical arguments; or it means sponges being 'dipped' in fluid; and by Strabo (first century B.C.) to describe people who could not swim as being 'submerged' under water. Josephus in the first century A.D. used the word to describe the city of Jerusalem as being 'overwhelmed' or 'plunged' into destruction by the Romans; and Plutarch (also first century A.D.) used this word to refer to a person being 'immersed' in the sea. In the Septuagint (the Greek version of the O.T.), 'baptizo' is used to describe Naaman dipping himself in the Jordan River (2 Ki. 5:14). From classical Greek right down to New Testament Greek, the same basic meaning has been retained: 'To immerse, submerge, dip or plunge.' Jesus is stating that the disciples will indeed be plunged into the same sufferings that He will experience. There are many forms of persecution. Having your life threatened because of your faith in Jesus is one way you can be persecuted. History shows that the church has always flourished under persecution with increased numbers and zeal. During intense, life-threatening persecution, people's priorities get straightened out and the Lord assumes His rightful place. This always works for our good, regardless of what our outward circumstances might be. It helps to recognize that it is not you that they are persecuting, but rather Christ in you. You are actually partaking in His sufferings and will share in His rewards. With this in mind, we can actually shout and leap for joy in times of persecution. Ready or Not, Here He Comes The real Noah stirred things up when he was here. Guess what? He did it again a few years ago. Yeah, on the big screen they did a Noah movie Noah and his ark. Yeah, the movie version; it had a big launch when it came out. And actually Captain Noah proved that he still has the ability to be controversial. Except this time, it was mostly among Bible people. There were some people objecting to all that the movie adds and subtracts from the original account. And then others expressed hope that it would interest some un-Bible people in the real Story. And, in fact, that is what happened. There was a sudden spike in Bible reading and Bible websites. That's a good thing. I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I want to have A Word With You today about "Ready or Not, Here He Comes." What is interesting is that thousands of years later, Jesus was talking about Noah. And He actually was suggesting that when people are thinking about Noah, they should be looking for Jesus to come. Here's what He said in our word for today from the Word of God. It's in Luke 17:26-27. "Just as it was in the days of Noah, so will it be in the coming of the Son of Man. For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark; and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man." So what we've got here is Jesus establishing this linkage between Noah and the time Jesus is going to come back to earth. That's worth thinking about. Jesus used the story of Noah as a picture of what the world would look like on the eve of the climactic event of all human history - His return. When He said, "They will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky, with power and great glory" (Matthew 24:30). Bottom line? The world isn't done with Jesus Christ. Jesus is our future. Actually, Jesus is your future. See, He will come to a world that, basically using the Noah example that He did, will be busy ignoring Him; too busy to have time for Him, living for their appetites, caught up in the gerbil wheel of their lives, spinning and spinning, doing whatever they feel like and oblivious to the flood of God's judgment that's coming. But at the same time, there will be an ark where they can be rescued. His name is Jesus. But see, nobody took Noah seriously. Nobody took his message seriously, so none of them were in the ark. So Jesus is going to write the final chapter of human history. It won't be some president or prime minister or powerful nation. No, it will be Jesus. By the way, Jesus will write the final chapter of your personal history. See, the Bible says, "How shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation?" Salvation? That's a rescue word isn't it? Well, Jesus came here to pay the price for the sin that carries an awful death penalty. I was on death row spiritually, except for the fact that Jesus came and became my substitute for my penalty for my sin when He died on the cross. Then He walked out of His grave to prove that if I would let Him walk into my life He would give me the eternal life that only He has demonstrated He has on that first Easter morning. He said one thing about His return. He said, "You must be ready" (Matthew 24:44). I wonder, are you? Are you ready to meet Him, either when He comes back or when your last breath is taken? Because the Bible says, "It is appointed to man to die once, and after this the judgment." But see, that's the judgment that Jesus took on the cross; the judgment that you can have canceled by your decision this day to pin all your hopes on Jesus. Tell Him, "Jesus, I'm Yours." From every single experience - every trial - every hurdle - every test that you’ve face - GOD will make sure you experience every single promise of blessing. Roman's 8:28 says, "And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.” So don’t live in regret. Don’t live in the “what if’s” of the past. Move forward and watch the plan of GOD unfold. Job 12:10 reminds us, “In His hand is the life of every creature and the breath of all mankind.” GOD knows all your past mistakes-regrets-struggles and pain. For whatever you’ve been through- you will come out better - stronger and wiser. "High Life Or Low Life"
Coffee Break "High Life Or Low Life" "...Come up hither..." Revelation 4:1 For far too long God's people have been living in the "low life". I believe He is calling us to come up higher. What is the "low life"? It is that place where we are held captive to besetting sins. It is that place of carnal thinking. It is the place of conformity to this world. It is the place where our affections are set on things below-- materialism, fame, fortune, approval of men. It is the place where that which is temporary is the pursuit. It is the place of fleshly, human desire. This "low living" is the lifestyle of too many of those who call themselves Christians. We forget that this is what the Lord delivered us out of, yet we continue to live in it. It is time for us to change the level on which we live. The Bible says that we are going from "glory to glory"-- there is no staying the same and there is only one direction that our lives should be going: Up! It is time that we rise up and move up-- up to this "higher plain" that He is calling us up to. God never calls us to move down, He always calls us to move up. The "higher life" is the place where His presence resides. When we come "up hither", we come into the very presence of God. When God called John to "come up hither", John saw a greater revelation of Jesus Christ. Remember, John was one of Jesus' disciples. He saw the miracles Jesus did, heard His teachings, was on the Mount of Transfiguration, placed his head on Jesus' chest and heard His heartbeat, he was called the disciple whom Jesus loved. But he had not seen it all-- he only saw such a small part, just a glimpse, of who Jesus was. Now that he has "come up hither" he sees Jesus as He truly is-- Almighty, King of kings, Lord of lords, Conquering King of glory to Whom every knee bows. When John went up higher, not only did he see Jesus in His glory and majesty. He saw the Kingdom, he saw God's plan, he saw things from God's perspective, and he saw what was in the mind of heart of God. As we come up higher, it is God's desire to show us great and mighty things. It is His desire to make His ways known to you. It is His desire to reveal Himself to you in a greater way than you have seen Him before. It is His desire that you abide in His presence as you walk throughout this world-- that is why He is calling you to "come up higher". Which level will you live on? The low one? Or the high one that is filled with God Himself? Have a great day. God is calling you to come up to a higher place--- a place of abiding in the presence of God. HOW DO YOU PRAY FOR GOD'S BLESSING? “We would get our family together, hold hands, sing and pray,” says Jonas, 6. Families are truly blessed when God is at the center of home life. Children respond when they see their parents humble themselves before God. “I would ask God to give me wisdom and love for one another. I would also ask God to take care of Nana, Granny Jones and Boots, my dog,” says Joseph, 7. God once gave a blank check to a man named Solomon. He could ask for anything. Because he asked for wisdom, God threw in wealth, power and fame, as well. To this day, King Solomon is known for his wisdom. Many of the wise sayings in the book of Proverbs stand as a testimony to his request and the blessings of wisdom. As for love, Daniel, 9, says: “Most of all, I would really want for God to bless me with the love of Jesus Christ in my heart because it would be the best of all blessings.” Wisdom is a great blessing, but the Apostle Paul said the greatest Christian virtue is love. “Without love,” he wrote, “I am nothing.” Receiving God’s love and being its conduit is the supreme blessing. You may have wealth, power and fame, but if you don’t have love, you’re running on empty. Only love can motivate people to make sacrifices for each other. Laws can’t do it. The Bible perspective is that all people are basically selfish apart from God. Only a heart transformed by the love of Christ can give unselfishly. “I would pray God would let me be famous,” says an anonymous friend. “I would want him to give me a big mansion, and he could give me money. I could keep it for myself and give some to the poor. Then I could be happy myself, and the poor would be a little happier. If I became rich and famous, the whole world would be happy to see me up on a stage singing.” Please don’t pray this prayer! Although giving to the poor is commendable, seeking fame for the sake of fame has ruined many lives. Hollywood is littered with broken lives of people who made fame their goal. Living before an audience of one changes everything. All glory belongs to God. If we try to grab it for ourselves, we’ll learn that it fades quickly and leads to instability. When God honors and promotes someone, that’s a different story. God took a shepherd boy from obscurity and made him ruler of a nation, because in his heart, he sought God’s approval. King David wasn’t perfect, but his life was characterized by humbling himself before God and seeking his approval. My favorite prayer for God’s blessing comes from Daniel, 9: “Dear Lord, please bless me in everything you do. Amen.” This is what true prayer and blessing are all about. God is always at work. When we discover what God is doing, we should change our lives and get on board the blessing train. By the way, God’s work isn’t limited to Sunday morning and foreign mission fields. His life should invade every aspect of every Christian’s life. “I would pray that God would bless me so that I can spread the word of God to everyone,” says Kelsey, 11. Yes, God works through people who want to be channels of his blessing. Think about this: God’s blessing is far better than your own efforts to bless yourself. Memorize this truth: “O Lord of hosts, blessed is the man who trusts in You!” (Psalm 84:12). Ask this question: Do you sense God’s hand of blessing on your life?

Exodus 32
Exodus 32 Exodus 32 includes one of the most famous—and most tragic—stories from the history of Israel, the scene where God’s people make for themselves a golden calf to worship while Moses is receiving the law from Yahweh on top of Mount Sinai. To understand the full significance of this story, we must recognize that Aaron does not technically encourage the people of Israel to worship different gods. Rather, after he fashions the molten gold into the image of a calf, he identifies the calf as “your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt” (Ex. 32:4). Then, Aaron proclaimed that “Tomorrow shall be a feast to the LORD” (Ex. 32:5)—that is, to Yahweh. 1 The golden calf, then, was not understood as a different god for Israel to worship. Rather, the calf was supposed to be a physical representation of Yahweh, even though Yahweh had explicitly forbidden Israel from making any graven image to represent him (Ex. 20:4–6). So, Yahweh tells Moses to leave him alone so that he may consume Israel in his wrath and then start a new nation from Moses alone (Ex. 32:10). Moses, for his part, rises up to play the role of a faithful mediator between Yahweh and his people. He pleads with Yahweh to avoid bringing mockery from the Egyptians (Ex. 32:11–12) and to remember the covenant that he had sworn to Abraham, Isaac, and Israel to multiply and bless Israel forever (Ex. 32:13). Yahweh still commissions the Levites to strike down about three thousand Israelites for their sins (Ex. 32:25–29) and sends a plague on Israel (Ex. 32:35), but he relents from destroying Israel altogether (Ex. 32:14). This story should stand as a stark warning against our own prideful desires to worship Yahweh in the ways that we choose. Whenever we say things like “Jesus just wants me to be happy” or “Jesus is all about grace—he doesn’t really care about this or that sin in my life,” we are fashioning for ourselves a false god to worship, just like the Israelites did with the golden calf. Calling this god Jesus doesn’t make the idolatry better—it makes it far worse. The reality, however, is that we all make false images of God, in both big and small ways. We need, therefore, a greater mediator than even Moses. The gospel, then, is that Jesus Christ did not talk God out of destroying us, but rather he submitted to be killed in our place, taking upon himself our plagues from the wrath of God for our sin. By doing that, Jesus became our great Mediator, standing between God and us, and securing an eternal redemption through his death and resurrection. How should the reality of our idolatry and the mediation of Jesus inform the way we approach and worship God? 1 English Bibles translate the proper name of God in the Old Testament “Yahweh” as “LORD” in all capital letters.

DEMONSTRATIVENESS But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8 FROM THE FATHER'S HEART My child, how do I define love? Love is who I am. Love is what I did for you. Love is how I will always treat you. I chose to let you know how very precious you are to Me by dying for you. Is there any greater love than this? It didn't matter what you looked like, or what you had done. I demonstrated My love so you would know without any doubt My words are not empty. When I say, "I love you," I mean it, My child. Will you demonstrate your love for Me by letting Me love through you today? A GRATEFUL RESPONSE You didn't just say You loved me, Lord. You showed me. Though I felt like a broken piece of discarded pottery, You treated me like a piece of fine china. Your demonstrativeness, Lord, Your love in action, won me over. As I love You in return, You are the one who changes me. SIMPLE TRUTH The miracle of God's love is not that He loves us—but that He loves us as we are.
