windshield replacement
has anybody ever replaced their windshield or back glass on a fastback them self? what is all involved on doing the job yourself? how hard is it to get the top molding unhooked from the retaining clips? do you have to take any inside trim off? any help or suggestions would be very much appreciated. Thanks!?

Ted, I have not done a Fairlane/Torino BUT know that you need to remove ALL the outside trim around the glass be it the front or rear windshields. There are special tools used to release/remove the trim. There is also a special (which really isn't all that special) used to cut the seal (think of a large cheese cutter like wire that gets fished from outside to inside between the glass and body attached to handles used to cut the seal which is a 2 person job OR a special metal hand tool/knife for that job a 1 person job. IF you know what you are doing 1 person can remove the glass. But is easier all around for 2 people (or more sometimes) to do it. That said, I suggest on a 1st, second or third time you attempt this on a lot less expensive windshield (like in a inexpensive U-Pull-It yard where all you would be out is the yard enterance fee and time if it goes wrong). Personally, you would be best to pay a glass shop or someone that knows what they are doing to replace the windshields if/when needed. IF the car has full glass coverage on the insurance policy, I suggest you go that route. And IF you don't have full glass coverage I highly suggest you add it to your policies going forward, as it is well worth it for the average person. Thanks, Dave, for info. I did a windshield replacement on my 65 Cyclone last year, but that one has a rubber seal and not set up like the 68-69 Torino's. I had to pull all the trim pieces off inside and out. I looked at my Torino and I don't think that any inside trim needs to be removed. but that's just my guess. I called two glass shops here by me. one shop took all my information but never called me back. the second shop will not replace anything unless you buy it from them. I bought two windshields and the back glass for the fastback. from Auto City Classics in MN. I contacted two glass shops that offer the mobile service to see what they would charge me to come replace both front and back glass on my car. One place told me to take it to a body shop and have them call a glass shop to get it done. Now you have two shops involved and two guys to pay on top of the money you paid for the glass. I know if I can get the trim off without messing it up or chipping the paint by it. I can do the job with one of my friends to help me.Thanks again for your input.? ??

Ted, To my knowledge and memory, at least on the front windshield, no interior pieces (except for the mirror) need to be removed to do it. The trim, wiper arms and cowel vent panel need removing. Then cut the adhesive seal on the glass. From my view the only reason for removing and/or covering interior trim/headliner would be to prevent them from getting damaged and/or dirty and/or accidentally getting sealant/adhesive on it from installation of the replacement (new or good used) windshield and/OR IF needed for some reason to get safer (as in preventing interior trim damage) and better access to further cut the seal from the inside, that is IF you couldn't get it cut fully through from the outside. I went through that with my '68 Fairlane where the glass shops won't mess with it UNLESS you buy from/through them. Which I understand from both a liability and warranty standpoint. What happens IF they break it and/or it doesn't seal right. I attached some pics (5 pics total) I have showing the front windshield without the side trim pieces and cowel vent panel. After you download the pics to your computer the resolution of pics should be decent enough to zoom in a decent amount if needed for better detail viewing.
